The Gum-Slinger gets tossed, and the Yankees run themselves out of a game. Ten Takeaways...

1. When you get an apocalyptic, 9th inning, game-tying, majestic HR, you're not supposed to lose. Fantastical comebacks are supposed to bring fantastical victories. On that note: WTF? A "Yankees Suck!"-chanting Fenway crowd had been reduced to a delicious existential silence. Children were crying. Puppies were whimpering. Their super-ace had thrown a masterpiece - for nothing. The Yankees had risen from the grave. You're not supposed to lose.

2. Gum-Slinger Aaron Boone got ejected, after protesting two video replays. No typo. He went Chiclets ballistic over two replay reviews. There's somepin you don't see every day, Chauncy: A manager going full Tanya Harding over the decision of faceless lawyers in a faraway studio. Honestly, both calls could have gone either way. But they went against us. How can you blame the umps on the field?

3. A generic rule of baserunning: Never get thrown out at 3B. Apparently,  Anthony Volpe missed that memo. His failed attempt to steal third - a questionable decision, at the least - effectively killed us. Does Volpe have free reign to steal any base, at any time? I didn't realize he was Lou Brock.

4. To be honest, I thought Volpe stole third, or the play was too close to be overturned. But it was. Hate to be a hardass, but repeating: You're never supposed to get thrown out at third.

5. The two 10th inning video challenges - Volpe at 3B and LeMahiue's near double down the RF line - added about 10 agonizingly dull minutes to the game. How to kill an audience? Stand around for 10 minutes.

6. I hate to put ridiculous emphasis on a game in mid-June, but tonight, the Yankees really need a win. They should have the advantage: Carlos Rodon - their number two, arguably an all-star - will face the mouthy Yankee-hater, Hunter Biden Dobbins. We gotta win.

7. Over the last two weeks, Trent Grisham and Ben Rice have been plummeting in value. Grisham is hitting .200; Rice is .179. Right now, neither should be near the top of the lineup. If we need lefty bats, go with Jazz or the Martian.

8. I'll deny this in court, but last night - damn - I found myself wishing Giancarlo Stanton could grab a bat. The Yankees have scored 2 runs in 19 innings. We need a spark, maybe a tall one.

9. History is upon us. Boston has entered the Age of Marcelo and Roman. (That's Mayer and Anthony.) We should bow to their magnificence.

At least we no longer have to see their farm system ranked at the top of MLB. Maybe they'll join Tampa, Toronto and Baltimore as teams who enjoyed top ranked farm systems - with nothing to show for it.

10. Talk about bad baserunning: The Martian should have scored from 2B in the fifth inning, on DJ's sharp single to right. I don't understand why they held him back. The Yankees are still losing games due to blown fundamentals and stupidity.

And you're not supposed to lose them like last night.

  1. A Saturday night game? Uh-oh. That means juiced balls. And somebody had better juice the Yankees' balls. As it was, we got a break when they were insane enough to pitch to Judge in the 9th...

    1. Hoss, that fastball was perfect location for a right handed hitter to launch. Wonder what Crochet was thinking there? I was thinking either fastball over head high or off speed down and away, and Judge goes down flailing.

Anyways, Judge did it whilst hitting #3 in the lineup. Wonder what the "Judge must hit #2" morons were thinking? Perhaps they said "see there, if Judge had hit #2, he woulda hit a leadoff homer, and then they woulda had a better chance to score another run that inning". Actually, in a one inning game, it would maximize their chances of winning if Judge came up third that inning. But you can't control how the lineup shakes out in the 9th.

  2. ...And what a surprise in general. Trent Grisham, a lifetime .216 hitter, is sliding steadily toward... .216. Jazz Chisholm, a perpetually injured ballplayer...is injured, yet again. Oswald Peraza, who has never been able to hit at a major-league level...can't hit at a major-league level. Anthony Volpe...oh, never mind.

Suffice it to say, the Yanks are rapidly reverting to the mean. What a surprise! Sure, we can count on Giancarlo Stanton coming back soon...and stinking up the place for days, maybe weeks, until he finally gets his swing back...and gets injured again.

Nothing ever changes, here in the Bronx that time forgot.

    1. Yep, Grisham slowly coming back down to earth. What we all thought. All of us except Yankee management.

  3. They play the game like drunken toddlers gorged on Ring Dings and “Boone’s Farm” Blue Hawaii wine *

Furthermore, I suspect the videos the coaching staff make the players watch in preparation for games are old episodes of Boohbah and Teletubbies.

Boone’s post game pressah’ was him at his infantile best. A tough question or two away from flinging himself on to the floor in full blown tantrum mode.

We need mature, seasoned professionals managing men - not volatile wannabes coddling children.

    * THAT ! Gives me an idea !

  5. "Chiclets ballistic"...well done

  6. On Dobbins: the more you hate the opposing pitcher, the less the Yankees will hit against him. The juju directive should be: suppress the hate, and the Yankees might hit.

  7. I can't believe that Judge WAS a heroic clutch hitter, and they blew it.

There is no justice. Speaking of which, we could use old Dave.

    1. I'm really starting to think that Judge is operating under some kind of epic curse. Close ... but no cigar. Aaron never made it to the promised land.

  8. Rice and Grisham never fooled me.

The Yankees have the worst record in MLB in the ghost runner era. This is a direct reflection of their inability to perform fundamental baseball, in this case move the runner from 2nd to 3rd, as the Sox immediately did. Volpe trying to steal 3rd was a travesty and he needs to be benched for a game (or more) to drive the point home. Dominguez is a case of not quite ready for MLB play, we must live with his mistakes and hope he is continuing to receive adequate instruction and coaching - which I doubt.

On the positive side, it was a nice comeback start from the professional Yarborough; in spite of the injuries, the staring rotation has proved to be the true strength of the team. Rodon has been born again hard, and he will need to bring his A-game tonight to rescue the one-dimensional inconsistent offense.

Lastly, forgive me for violating my one cardinal rule and allow me to say: FUCK TRUMP

    1. A fucking military parade on his fucking birthday. Straight out of a fascist jackass playbook.

    2. Is the jackass going to stand on a balcony and do the Nazi salute and then point his finger and say "it's all their fault"? All the American Nazis, and there are plenty of Nazis here, just as there were back before and during WWII, must be having a fucking Nazi orgasm. Freedom of speech applies to Nazis, but not to any protesters at the parade. First time I ever heard a U.S. President warn potential protesters of an ass kicking if they showed up. WTF?

  9. Hate to say it, Duque, but I think they're going to get swept. Another FOX game today: that means they'll get killed. And the offense has really tanked. In a pretty frightful slump. All the ex-Yankees on the Red Sox are really gettin' their money's worth on the revenge tour.

  10. Well, thanks be to God that they did avert a 1-0 loss. With all the 1-0 games they're playing lately, that sure looked like a loss. When the Red Sox had the bases loaded in the 8th, I'ze actually hoping for a grand slam just so the Yankees didn't lose 1-0. Cuz I'd rather lose 5-0 than 1-0. Actually, I'd rather lose 100-0 than 1-0 just cuz you can forget about the blowout loss easier than a 1-0 loss.

  11. Hey, Judge finally hit one that counted in the 9th! It came in 100 mph and left what looked like 120 mph. Amazing! And wouldn't you know it, they blew it in extras.

    ReplyDelete
  12. Duque, yeah, I couldn't believe Volpe trying to steal third with nobody out. And that's where Boone is a fucking moron. Gotta have a "no-steal" sign, red light there. At least wait 'til there's a right handed hitter and one out before attempting it.

    ReplyDelete
  13. And with two outs in the 10th, gotta go to another pitcher there. Can't leave a lefty in there to pitch to Narvaez. Dumb, dumb, dumb, whoever was managing there with Boone thrown out.

  14. Clown Organization, Clown Moves, Yankees piss away another game.

  15. If the Yankees "have the worst record in MLB in the ghost runner era," I have to blame coaches, the manager and that useless bunch of overprivileged geeks, the analytics dept. Ditto the problems of sloppy baserunning, inability to execute a double play, letting players advance due to 'defensive indifference', the utter lack of fundamentals or executing in the clutch.

Blame Volpe? I dunno. I was 'watching' the game on GameDay. Did the 3rd base coach or manager greenlight him? If so, blame them for not reading the field before Volpe took off. But he'd be a hero if he made it to third. so I'm not sure I want to blame him for trying to win.

And yeah, fuck Trump. But fuck the red hat-wearing front office leadership even more. Levine should be in prison and the rest should be looking for new jobs. But the privileged always fail upwards, as our idiot-in-chief proves daily.

Duque, I don't think Bonehead Boone took your advice. Grisham leading off, Rice 3rd.

Probably a good idea to double up on the blood pressure meds this evening.

  19. The coaching is unfortunately very consistent. Consistently horrid.

  20. 1-4 versus a subpar Boston team over the last two weeks. Forget the record, forget the standings. That is who the Yankees are.

  21. This is awful. Fucking hell.
