Why are we devoting time to this spiritless Yankee franchise, this spineless company, this blood-sucking family-owned business?
What is the point?
After four months of play, the American League is a shambles, and only two teams - the Angels and Royals - are effectively done for the year.
If the season ended today, any AL team over .500 would get to play in October. A week from the All-Star break, the wretched Redsocks - mired in their most disappointing season of this millennium - are just five games down in the wild card race. Five.
As the Yankees flounder, are you starting to feel - well - abused?
The Yankees sport baseball's third highest payroll ($339 million) after the Dodgers ($420 million) and Mets ($374 million). They spend three times as much as the Tampa Rays ($111 million). If they were a governmental agency, they would be indicted for fraud.
So, why are we assigning so much energy, so much angst, to a team that can't even field an MLB worthy defense?
It's simple: They cannot fail. The AL is gerrymandered, rigged with tomato cans. It doesn't matter what the Yankees do this week, or next. They are positioning themselves for October. They'll get Judge back in August. They'll get Giancarlo back - oh, fuck a duck, who cares? Soon, we'll hear breathless updates on Clarke Schmidt, and then comes the trade deadline, when they once again sacrifice their farm system for short team gains.
We're doing it again.
The Yankees aren't collapsing. They are just doing what they always do.

Why is Boone still the manager? Why is Cashman still the GM? Why isn't Randy Levine sitting in a prison some where? Why didn't Lonn Trost get fired for being racist, classist asshole who can't stop insulting the customers? Why do the Yankees consistently suck?
DeleteBecause winning doesn't matter. This is a team run by trust-fund morons who realized that making a profit and winning a ball game are two unrelated matters. And since everyone who matters was born rich, nothing really matters.
They don't sell seats to actual Yankee fans, they sell seats to tourists and corporations. Actual New Yorkers can't afford them anyway, especially if they want to bring their kids.
The Yankees are as fraudulent as everything else in America.

ReplyDeleteAll right, so: incredibly, Yanks are still the team ranked highest in the AL (14 percent) to win the AL. And still 98 percent to make the playoffs. It's not going to happen...
ReplyDeleteJudge is not coming back. Stanton is not coming back. Bellinger, who needed to pick up at least some of that slack, is in one of his flop years. Rice? Possibly injured, definitely flopping. But that's all meaningless...
ReplyDeleteCompared to the fact that they don't have pitching. The bullpen has never been reliable this season. But now the starting rotation is falling apart. (Nice that Schlittler will pitch in the All-Star Game. I have a feeling that it's likely to be his last big start.)

I don't think the farm system has but one prospect anyone wants.
