With two games today, the end is near.

Lemme get this straight. Jose Caballero wants revenge. Last year, when the Rays ditched him, they hurt his feelings. He hasn't forgotten. For months now, he's been silently seething, festering, waiting for payback. Now, in this John Carpenter fog of late September, Cabby intends to bring down the jackboot of justice via his personal vendetta scrapbook?

Sum it up?

I ask - humbly, sincerely - because it's hard to imagine anyone else still chasing the fiery clown car known as the 2026 Yankee season. In theory, the Yankees could sweep Tampa in four games and hit the final weekend like Van Morrison in The Last Waltz, (though they'd still probably more channel Neil Diamond.)  It's not gonna happen. Everybody knows it, including the Cabster.

God bless the guy for clutching hope, but did he witness the same regular season we did?

The last six months have been a year of runners on second and third with no outs - and we don't score even a run. It's been a year when our Cy Young candidate - the worthy Cam Schlittler - has only won only 14 games. It's a year we lost Aaron Judge, gave up on the Martian, and said farewell to Giancarlo, presumably forever.

What was the Yankee highlight of 2026?

Watching the Knicks win the NBA.

What finished second?

Watching the Mets fall apart.

Soon, the season will boil down to a three-game playoff against Boston. Win, and we'll hug some measure of satisfaction, even after the Dodgers are done with us. Lose and - well - 2026 goes down as one of the most frustrating seasons in recent memory.

So, today, let's play two. And let's get this pennant race thingy over with. By the time Kimmel does his monologue, the tail of the Titanic should be disappearing under the waves. I hope Cabby gets a few hits.

This is the end. Our only friend, the end.

See you on the other side.

  1. So pleased to see a reference to The Last Waltz. A great movie. It's hard to believe it was even made.

  2. As The Master would've said, it's last chance saloon for the Yanks. But to me it feels like exhibition baseball or spring training baseball. Because the real season starts when the regular season ends.

  3. It's hilarious that the Yankees entertain thoughts about sweeping the Rays and winning the division. Kind of like the Black Knight with both his arms and legs cut off continuing to shout challenges in Monty Python and the Holy Grail.

  5. Yeah, sure. You are 100% accurate both factually and emotionally but how about them Giants! Oh...

If I may digress. I didn't think they would beat the Rams but coming out of the first two weeks at 1-1 would have been more than enough for me.

But losing Dart, watching Nabors grab his shoulder, losing Thomas. (AGAIN! This is becoming Stanton level, "We know he's going to miss games" stuff), AND losing Burns?

After the game I was waiting for the "Sig Alert" to tell me the team bus crashed on the 405.

    WTF. Seriously! WTF!

It's the hope that kills you. From now on the only Hope I'll have will be in Road pictures.

    Sigh...

OK Alphonso... College football it is! Any suggestions? Looking forward to the annual clash of my two alma maters Brockport v. Stony Brook but the season is long. Help me.

  6. And also in the post season when all the schlubs do not sniff a hit.

  7. College football is also insane, Doug. Last week, I watched USC beat Rutgers in a "Big Ten" game. The Big Ten is now the Big 23, and goes coast-to-coast.

It's all Koyannisquatsi—life out of balance.

  8. Everything counts in large amounts. No Judge, not enough deserved Schlittler wins, shaky comebacks from Tommy John, the infield, the bullpen, Boone's stupid decisions...after awhile, in adds up to a lot of bupkis. Zilch. No rings for you, piggy.

  9. "The Big Ten is now the Big 23,"

I knew that as a country our math scores were declining in general but you would think there would be an understanding of basic math at the college level.
