It finally happened.
Ten other ponderings...
1. Trouble in paradise. Tampa still can't fill its giant ping pong ball. Game II against Cleveland drew 32,125 - about 8,000 fewer than the Yankee massacre. This is not supposed to happen with a healthy sport.
2. Fortunately, the Rays know who to blame: The fans, of course. And count me in. What a bunch of cheapos. They move to Florida, skip on taxes, rent a Lazy-Boy and a satellite dish, ride around on their scooters, scream about MAGA and complain about ticket prices - $84 for the Ueker seats. Pay up, grampa.
3. Actually, they're pissed about the secondary markets, and how the Rays jiggle prices like hotel and airline reservations, all to sit in a sunless vacuum and watch baseballs kick up fake dirt and bounce off the ceiling rings. I thought domed baseball was done.
4. Last year's Yankee fulcrum moment was when Trent Grishman accepted their $22 million one-year qualifying offer. It meant a clogged OF and no spending upgrades elsewhere. We'd play the same team, with the same fate. This year, it looks to be Jazz Chisholm. Will the Yankees make him an offer? Be careful. He might just take it.
5. I know it's moronic to do this, but close your eyes and imagine that the Yankees - instead of crapping the bed last week - had played the same quality of baseball they did against Boston. If the Yankees were still afloat - (of course, they are not) - we would be extolling the new Core 4 - Schlittler, Rice, Jones, Lombard - and fancying a new era for the franchise. Ugh. Parlor games, right?
6. Maybe let's not write the Dodgers' obit. They're still one of the richest teams in American sports, and there is no reason to think they won't continue their voodoo economics. Supposedly, their owner faces numerous federal investigations. What a joke. A couple campaign checks will solve that. Come February - a normal February, anyway - who thinks the Dodgers won't outspend the rest of humanity?
7. Some people claim a world series between Milwaukee and Cleveland - two small markets - will undermine the owners' argument about too money in sports. These people are fools. It wouldn't matter if the world series was Toledo v Reading. The forces behind this lockout have been edging into place for 20 years. No matter who wins the series, baseball is heading toward a dark place, (and, damn, so is America.)
8. One Yankee concern is already emerging: What to do with Ben Rice? This year, they bottled him up as a DH, a horrible fate for a generational star. He must play 1B or move back to catcher. You cannot expect him to waste his career as a DH.
9. I suppose Shohei Ohtani will stay in LA, but I've always believed that before his career ends, he will try a stint on the East Coast, either in NY or Boston. That might not take place in 2027, but crazier things have happened. And the Yankees - see #8 - always need another DH, right?
10. The Yankees are a handful of back pages behind the Knicks for tabloid cover supremacy. If they had reached the ALCS, they'd be well on their way to winning the year. Now, with injuries redrawing the NFL, the Giants and Jets might even show a pulse. And the Knicks will soon begin. It's a wide-open race.

Philosophical point, Most Esteemed Duque - you say that we played a certain quality of ball against the Beantown Turds, but would it not be possible for that same level of ball playing to have gotten us swept by the young and mighty Brewers? Isn't everything relative in this off-kilter universe? I'm just not sure I can get behind your 5th point.
ReplyDeleteYep, I can the Yankees getting swept by the Brewers. Worse than that. The greatest beat down in the history of the World Series. We dodged that.
DeleteI wrote that the Boston playoff series was our World Series: the players would be very up for it, but after beating the Beaners, they would be drained and have nothing left for Tampa. Or, if they somehow did, the Tampa series would drain what little zip they had left and they would fall to the .500 Central team of choice.
ReplyDeleteTurns out, I was right about Boston and then Tampa, so we never had to worry about anything further. We blew the wad against the Sox and that was it.
The Yankees sure did celebrate like they won the 2026 WS.
DeleteA two game WS!

ReplyDelete"A year from now Yankees fans will be waiting for the team’s annual end-of-the-season press conference while people employed and associated with the team and anyone who covers the team beg the organization to make a change. Nothing is going to change in the front office this winter. Nothing will change in the dugout. Nothing will change in the clubhouse. And because of all that, nothing will change in October. The Yankees don’t need to hold an end-of-the-season press conference to tell everyone what we already know."
Can’t Tank This
ReplyDeleteOH NO NO NO
OH NO
NO NO
That’s because every day is Groundhog Day if you’re a Yankee fan.
ReplyDeleteThe Mill-Walk-Key Brewers slew the dragon of darkness L.A. Dodgers. And it wasn't even a series. Dodgers were broom swept clean. Jack London wrote "youth will be served" and even mighty Thor lost an exhibition wrestling match to Old Man Time. That was an epic changing of the guard.
ReplyDeleteEven after Ohtani hit a 3 run HR, and the Brew Crew fell behind 4-0, I kind of felt that the game wasn't over. And what do ya know, the Brew Crew pull it out 6-4 in convincing fashion. They didn't leave anyone to ponder if the Brewers really were the better team. Brewers took a bulldozer to the fucking Dodgers in this series. That was total annihiliation. Total ecstasy for me!!!
CONGRATULATIONS TO THE MILWAUKEE BREWERS: YOU ARE THE SLAYER OF THE FUCKING DODGERS. YOU HAVE PROVEN YOURSELVES WORTHY NATIONAL LEAGUE CHAMPIONS. WE SALUTE YOU!!!
ReplyDelete21 GUN SALUTE:
FIRE!
FIRE!
FIRE!
KABOOM!!!
6. The fucking Dodgers financial hubris finally caught up to them. They think they're so fucking smart. They really only "won" the World Series in 2024, against the fucking Bronx Bastards. The 2025 World Series was fucking IKF and the stupid Toronto Blue Jays flushing it down the toilet and the Dodgers pulling it out of the sewer drain. Caught up in the fever of their two WS champions bull shit, the fucking Dodgers then proceeded to try to outspend and out-talent everyone else by signing Tucker for that ridiculous contract and trading for another big starter in Tarik Skubal. It has backfired spectacularly. Tucker didn't hit for shit and Skubal couldn't pitch for shit. It all went down just as I hoped.
ReplyDeleteSo let us examine the postmortem remains of the hateful Dodgers of 2024-2026. Just how good were they? Turns out they weren't anywhere near as good as they wanted everyone to think. In 2024, they beat the fucking Bronx Bastards, and any one would have beaten the Bronx Bastards, even a Little League team. The 2024 Bronx Bastards were one of those teams that couldn't get out of its own way, led by Head Clown Aaron Boone. In 2025, they "beat" the Toronto Blue Jays. At least that's what the record says. But we know they didn't "beat" the Blue Jays. The fucking Blue Jays gifted them the WS. It was a fucking gift. A toilet flushing job. A flotsam and jetsam recovery operation. In my opinion, those were the two WEAKEST WORLD SERIES "WINS" OF ALL FUCKING TIME. Certes, them two were the weakest back to back WS wins ever.
ReplyDeleteAin't the Dodgers got any fucking pride? If it was me, I'd throw those two WS wins in the garbage can. I'd be ashamed to call myself a WS Champion based on that garbage. It was worse than in the movie "Slap Shot". The first one, they beat a Little League outfit. The second one, they didn't even "win"; they were merely gifted, a salvage job. If they were men, they'd call it what it was: bull shit. They'd issue a challenge to re-play both of those World Series. Previous results burned, expunged, deleted.
7. Even so, Duque, I wanna stick it to the lords of baseball. It's great that, no matter what happens, the 2026 World Series matchup this year will be two "small market" teams. I've been pulling for the Brew Crew, but in truth, now that the fucking Dodgers have been exorcised, I don't much care what happens. But a small market team will be the World Series champion. That's heaven on earth. That's a red hot iron shoved up the asses of the lords of baseball.
ReplyDelete8. Is it so bad for Ben Rice to DH? Some guys don't have a position. Just not good enough with the glove. Edgar Martinez was a DH. Still made a helluva an impact. It does mean that Judge is going to have to play RF, come hell or high water.
ReplyDeleteI wonder if Rice can learn RF? At least he could try.
Delete9. I hope Shohei Ohtani stays on the fucking Dodgers till he rots. I don't want him coming to the Yankees, ever. If he was the last ballplayer on earth, I don't want him. The Yankees weren't good enough for him. The east coast wasn't good enough for him. I don't wanna hear about Ohtani finishing his miserable career here. I pray the Mets never make the stupid mistake of bringing in Ohtani. It would be a monumental mistake and we'd never hear the end of it. So stay in La La Land 'til he's ready for the nursing home.
ReplyDelete1. BTW, can't fill the seats in Tampa? Much I care. If you can't fill seats, you really shouldn't be there. Who the hell told these assholes to do a franchise in Tampa? There are two MLB franchises in Florida, and neither can fill the seats, right? It's just economics, the law of supply & demand. How 'bout cutting down ticket prices so that the average schmuck can afford it? Like how 'bout $4 seats? If you still can't sell out when 80% of the seats are $4, then you're in deep shit. Otherwise, don't come complaining to us about your overpriced seats being empty. If you can't compete financially, get out of business!
ReplyDeleteFlorida doesn't believe in many American customs, HOG. We should send Tampa Bay to Montreal and send the Marlins to Nebraska. That'll sort shit out real fast.
