All I know is that a 2016 Home Run King sat idle until Cashman scrounged him off the scrap heap for Hal's annual deck shoe budget. I would think batting average and strike outs had something to do with this fact. But what'...Yeah, yeah, three hits and three RBI. But what's his OPS?

When Carter strikes out with men on second and third, and men on first and second, and men on first and third, and a man on third with less than two outs, and a man on first, and a man on second, and any other configuration in the 200 or more times he will strike out or make an out on the way to batting .220, we can sit back and smile, knowing that his OPS is just terrific.

Sorry, Joe de P. I had to say it. I'm not trying to pick a fight, but I think OPS is one of the most overrated and flawed stats that the math whizzes have come up with to date. Although I can't really be sure of that, since they've come up with so many, I can't keep track. Some good, some not so much.

To be fair, I do like OBP, which is part of OPS but yet another mark against Carter. Slugging percentage isn't really that great, though, in some respects, from what I've read, which is not everything.

Question, though: is there a stat that tracks how many times you don't kill a rally, or stop one from ever getting started, or strike out in key situations? Because there's a stat I'd really get behind.

JMhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09876016557456927299noreply@blogger.com
