One late morning, they were driving in their car and stopped for a red light. They were first in line at the light. Travelling in the opposite direction, an elderly man suffered a fatal heart attack and crashed into my uncle's car head on. My uncle was killed instantly and my aunt had massive injuries that took years to mend.

In life you never know when and where.

Perhaps Hal someday soon will get washed away at sea in a yachting accident. As the other car plowed into mine, with my wife beside me, I remember -- even now -- thinking, in the few seconds it took:

"I wonder if I'm going to walk away from this."

Crash was on my side (driver's side) of the car. My left leg was broken in 4 places between the knee and ankle.

I'm not looking for sympathy -- it was 100%, entirely, my fault.

However, when the drivers who stopped their cars to pull me out of mine dragged me out of the car and put me down on the grass, I WAS LAUGHING. I was not drunk (it was 11am-ish). I had not had anything to drink the night before.

I was laughing because, well, I was still alive.

That was the interesting part.

The damage to the car, the titanium tube they put in my leg, the months of recuperation, the time it took for my wife's (minor) injury to heal -- all not so good. Perhaps this is why the word "suckitude" appeals to me on many levels.

This year seems to be unfolding (for all of us) almost precisely as did that experience (for me). You feel like laughing, it's so stupid.

And yet, it hurts.
