After Yossarian learned from Doc Daneka that his PTSD was normal, so he'd have to finish his full 15-month deployment in Iraq, talk turned to spring training.

“Giambi homered yesterday,” Yossarian said proudly. “He showed up in great shape. He's going to hit 30 home runs and bat .300.”

“Where’ll he play?” Doc asked.

“Designated hitter,” Yossarian said.

“He doesn’t hit at DH. He hits when he plays first base. He likes being in the game.”

“But Giambi's a horrible fielder. He can’t play first,” Yossarian said.

“If he doesn’t play first, he doesn’t hit,” Doc said.

“If they play him at first, he'll have a big year.”

“But he can't play first. He's horrible.”

“Then play him at DH.”

“Then he doesn't hit.”

“Damn,” Yossarian grumbled. "There's always a catch."
