Letter to the Editor: "Wrong... on so many levels"

The Globe and Mail (Canada)
December 13

Dear Editors,

While thousands are being laid off, the New York Yankees are willing to pay one person $161-million to throw a baseball. That's just wrong on so many levels.

Talent and performance in any worthwhile occupation should be well paid, but an average $23-million a year to throw a baseball is an obscene slap in the face when families of other hardworking, talented people are being devastated by layoffs.

  3. Yet, they do have a point. Adam, oh that the rest of us could think in the abstract like you!

  4. No, they don't have "a point." It's a supply/demand economic system. They wouldn't be getting paid like that if they didn't produce at least what they earn for the "company" that employs them.

If you want to get all evangelistic, then, you should be attacking the people who pay attention to sports and attend games, not the players who earn the money... and good luck getting through to anybody. What people choose to do with their money in their free time and luxury is completely up to them -- that is the society in which we partake, is it not? It is those choices which produce $20M/year contraction, not gluttonous players or owners or whatever he was trying to get at.

If you think the $161M would be better spent on helping the needy, you're completely right in my book... but then again, it's a not a matter of what's right, it's just fucking economics.

  5. Tell that to the KC Royal fan who can watch Kyle Farnsworth close for the next two years.

    That ain't capitalism.

    It's madness.

  6. You know Adam I was not being all evangelistic I was just commenting on "fucking" economics. By the way Duque thoughts of KC came to mind immediately.

  7. You made no comment on economics, BB King. You merely attacked my point of view with a weakly constructed criticism.

Re: Farnsworth... I really, really want a custom made KFARNS KC Royals shirt/jersey. I think that would go over great in New York.

  8. Thanks Adam, that's a good idea I'll get back to you in seven days.
