"Rain predicted... send help... can't go on...": Into Hype Day 5, NY media cracking under strain

Despite emergency relief efforts, the New York sports media is out of food, and humanitarian agencies fear weekend rain will cause mass starvation -- or chaos.

Danger signs are showing in columns, features and blogposts that have appeared five consecutive days without one scrap of news to report.

"There is nothing left, the cannibalizing has begun, and we are moving deeper into delirium," an anonymous Twitterer reported Friday morning from Ground Zero. "Everybody is talking like Peter Gammons. A few are channeling Dick Young. Do you understand? This is Katrina, this is Hiroshima, this is -- umm -- CHRIST, I'M OUT OF METAPHORS!"

One official cited 200,000 news stories filed about Bobby Abreu -- each the same -- but noted the most ominous sign in today's Newsday, reporting a Twitter from Nick Swisher.

"Can hardly wait for tomorrow ! Do it CC. Let's go Yankees."

"God help them," the official said. "This is the kind of crap you'd expect on the IT IS HIGH blog. GET THEM OUT, NOW!"
