The Captain Only Hit .223

Here's how I figure it.

Every time the Captain hit into a double play this past season, he was responsible for two outs.

Last year, he hit into a double play in every game we lost, and some we still won. Or nearly so.

In my book, when you create two outs from a single at bat, you have really gone 0-2.

Re-calculating Derek's 2010 batting average in that manner, I figure he hit .223 for the year. And that's not counting the double plays he hit into when we won.

I sent all of this to Brian Cashman.

We all love Derek. But he isn't worth another $180 million for ten years. Maybe $179 million for one or two years, tops.

We aren't going to win without Cliff Lee anyway.
