It's official. There is no God.
The New York Baseball Giants betrayed some of the most loyal fans in history, just doused the lights and snuck out with their bats and balls, to a place where ballgames wouldn't even start on the radio until 11 p.m. With the Dodgers, they kicked NYC square in the nuts and than ran before the pain rose.
If it happened today, the National Guard would be called.
If it happened today, well, it wouldn't happen.
Over the weekend, they returned with their World Series trophy -- gained from the draft picks of coming in last for a decade -- and shamelessly, ruthlessly, horribly, acted as if history never happened.
Said the Times:
... 53 years after their departure, the Giants came back to New York with Bill Neukom, the managing general partner and chief executive; Larry Baer, the president; Brian Sabean, the general manager; and Amalfitano, a special assistant for player development. They were on hand to help Posey celebrate his rookie award at the New York Baseball Writers Association of America dinner at the Hilton.
Most fans there were from California, just visiting NY. What's sad is that a few old-timers -- now in their 80s -- came to mourn the foul-smelling treachery of their ex-team.
Let this be said:
In 2010, the San Francisco Giants were as much a disgrace to New York City as the New York Football Giants.
As per our high moral standards, IT IS HIGH never condones violence. But this should not have been allowed to happen. There should have been a riot. Doesn't anybody out there carry crowbars anymore?
No ... shame on you Senor El Duque guy! Only a revisionist historian like yourself could discount the intense partisanship that divided NYC - three ways - back in the day. And to think that Brooklynites have not stayed Dodger fans all these years is a pipedream. As a west-coast transplant whose ancestry claimed the New York Baseball Giants as our own and never gave up on the team after moving to SF - I/we waited 56 long years for the Cinderella Season of 2010. And to do it with a full battery of four young starters; a closer and a rookie catcher - all coming via the draft and groomed through a minor league system - makes the win so much sweeter. Bringing the World Series Trophy and Willie Freaking Mays back to Harlem and the area around the old Polo Grounds was an enlightened gesture and hopefully will be the last the time the trophy sets foot in NYC for some time. Nanna, nanna, naaaa - naaaaa!
ReplyDeleteHey Anonymous, go back to San Francisco you hippie lesbian Giants fan. That franchise was respectable when it was in New York but not anymore. And it won't be the last time the trophy lands in NYC.
ReplyDelete"gained from the draft picks of coming in last for a decade"
ReplyDeleteLOL...no. They were in the World Series just 8 years ago. And they won more than 100 games the year after that.
Bitter much?
The Commie-Hippie-Pinko-Lesbo-Fag SF Giants fan from the west coast writing back .... just to get this straight (excuse the pun). Anonymous partisan hack writes: "That franchise was respectable when it was in New York but not anymore." Hmmmm - do I smell some delusional myopia stirred in with the homophobic name-calling mix? Stay classy - New Yorkers .. stay classy!
ReplyDeleteCommie-Hippie-Pinko-Lesbo-Fag SF Giants Fan: You didn't exactly get anything straight you just fired back at anonymous partisan hack for his slightly true comment. The Giants won 5 world series championships in New York but only one in San Francisco. And it took them half a century to accomplish that one championship. In the days when the Giants played for New York and were almost always world series contenders Lou Gehrig called them "A team you'd give you're left arm to beat." It just hasn't been the same for them since the move. Granted they did have the greatest home-run hitter ever in Barry Bonds a few years back.
ReplyDeleteI hated the Giants when the had that needle pumping Barry Bonds. But when they got rid of him and brought in potheads Tim Lincecum and Brian Wilson I began to like them. I happened to be in San Francisco during the World Series and there was this really nice smell in the air. A smell we could use more of in New York. I'm definately cheering for the SF Giants in NL this year over most those other teams and come November I'll be looking forward to watching the Bombers take the Commisioner's Trophy to the other 27 sittin in our closet.
