.....What's often missed here is the role of General Manager Brian Cashman in the post-George Steinbrenner era. Cashman's mandate is to win this year, and next year and the year after that. The fan base doesn't ever want 1998 to go away -- just look at the ovations players such as Paul O'Neill and David Cone get on Old-Timers' Day compared to ex-Yankees in the Hall of Fame -- but Cashman can't operate under those emotional parameters. No GM can......
Meanwhile, Cashman's contract is up after this season and you wonder how much grief and meddling he's willing to take. He'd be scooped up in a minute by several teams. And maybe he'd get to make more calls on his own with less interference.
