A Few Reflections On Earlier Predictions

1. Prediction: I believe I mentioned, before the season began, that Soriano was a " head case."

Reality: He is a head case. He is not a team player. He thinks only about himself and he is a whiner. Give Cashman credit on this one. He was right to show no interest.

2. Prediction: Jorge was going to be a problem as DH.

Reality: So far, he is a problem with his hitting, his speed and his attitude. His defense, however, seems to have held up.

3. Prediction: Tex would have a slow start, despite the radical changes to his off-season preparation.

Reality: My timing may have been somewhat off, but Tex is not a career .254 hitter. So something is still plaguing him early in the season. Oddly, his defensive prowess in the field is below the standard he had established at this time last season.

4. Prediction: Nick swisher had a career season last year and we should not expect him to repeat that.

Reality: He has ( so far ) played like his worst year with the White Sox.

5. Prediction: Signing any player that the Mets released has to be a mistake, even if he is a left-handed relief pitcher.

Reality: We have a new Carl Pavano on the DL, hoping that rest will avoid the inevitable surgery from Dr. Andrews. Dream on.

6. Prediction: Russell Martin was our best off-season acquisition.

Reality: I still think he is.

7. Prediction: None of the three B's would make the team, nor would Jesus.

Reality: Please review rosters for Scranton and Trenton.

8. Prediction: At the trade deadline, we are going to deal more than one of our most highly touted prospects for a player likely to underperform.

Reality: Check back at the trading deadline.

9. Prediction: This Yankee team, due to aging, injury and an unwillingness to inject youth, will not win anything this year.

Reality: Early dominance of AL East has faded dramatically, and we are frighteningly close to a .500 record.

  3. After celebrating the door shown to Torre, I now realize I was duped. Girardi IS Torre. We just don't recognize him because he drinks all that Bigelow green tea and takes Viagra constantly for his much-younger wife.

I think I like him better when he was old and grizzled. This US Marine haircut seems to go much less well with his inability to manage outside the rules and numbers.

Did Alphonso predict this a few years ago? I would bet he did.

  4. Did I win that bet?

    I thought so.

  5. @Carnac: No, he predicted Obama. It's an easy mistake.
