I can tolerate his declining skills, especially when his replacement is not much better. What rankles me is the over the top hype surrounding the 3000 hit quest. Yes, it's largely media and corporate generated but Jeter is on board and milking it $ wise for all its worth. By all accounts he has been a role model and a decent guy, but it is insulting to the intelligence to believe the saga of his selflessness and winning above all mantra. Besides it's great material to make fun of and these days there's not much to have a laugh about.

I glad this site [and the internet in general] wasn't around when my childhood heroes Mantle, Berra, Rizzuto,and Ford were in their declining years.

ReplyDeleteYES has been ridiculous about the 3000 hit thing. I really don't get all the fuss about round numbers, anyway.
