Inside Man: The Yankees had a paid operative, who surgically confiscated George Brett's famous pine tar bat

Hell of a tale.

  2. Duque, thanks for stoking the embers of memory. It was a rare treat to hear a Yankees radio broadcast on the West Coast. Lots of TV, but rarely on the air. I heard the Pine Tar game live while driving through Iowa, going from California to Indiana, and luckily those Plains states broadcasted Royals' games. Having to imagine in the mind's eye what was happening on the field was sort of the way classic ballgames had been experienced in previous decades, before all the TV coverage. For me, it's a radio memory, all the better because Billy Martin was smack dab in the middle of it, brawling, like in the 1950s.

  4. If Nettles's bio is called Balls, what will Alex's be called? Taint?
