Seattle Mariners manager Lloyd McClendon today proved again why his name is synonymous with championship baseball, when he blew out some smoke and fire, defending his star 2B Robbie Cano against charges that he may have trotted to first once or twice while a Yankee.
In an explosive war of words, McClendon stridenly defended Cano and went nuclear on Yankee hitting coach Kevin Long, saying - (Wait: if you're under 18, you probably shouldn't read this) - "I didn't know that Kevin Long was the spokesman for the New York Yankees!"
Woah. Kitty touch fire, Kitty get burned! So much for that dispute. I doubt we'll hear from K-Long again. Nor will anybody raise any issue about anybody loafing out grounders in Seattle. Nobody's gonna step into that bear trap. It's a good way to get your foot chopped off.
To settle this once and for all, let's hope McClendon asks Mr. Cano - very, very nicely - to lead the team in jogging drills. Or maybe one jogging drill. They can jog - or walk to first - then walk back, if they want. The return jog would be optional. Nobody would be expected to do it twice. Gotta save the legs. Like Robbie.
Does anyone remember Cano being booed in New York exhibiting the prima donna trot?
ReplyDeleteLloyd is channeling his inner Lou Piniella to rile his new team and show the Yankees Seattle ain't gonna be pushed around anymore. And to show Cano he means business, he's having Jesus "the Turtle" Montero teach Robbie to run faster.
ReplyDeleteI screeched and shook my tiny fist at him many times. I was even heard to yell "You're no Yankee!" on occasion. Other fans looked at me with slack-jawed amazement that I would berate the great Robinson Cano. Have fun Seattle. he's all yours now.
