Meaning, anybody?

Keep in mind that a DP ground ball
that rolls through an infield
looks like a hit in the box score.

  1. What have Jeters infield activities looked like in the box score lately?

  2. His lack of range--the most critical defensive asset for a shortstop--doesn't show up in the box score, but it does show up in the advanced defensive metrics you can find at fangraphs and baseball-reference and espn.

Jeter had the range of a fire hydrant before he blew out his ankle. Now his lateral movement is measured by the movement of his eyeballs.

It's a compound of marketing hype and ego that places this washed-up 40-year-old at shortstop. It's bizarro world baseball management.

  3. Sign Drew. Do it now before Detroit gets him. One year with performance incentives. Do it.
