Sunday links: Glyber ranks third in hot 100

Our secondary logo?
Cub fans are starting to carp about the price paid for Aroldis Chapman. Ingrates. All he did was break the dreaded Curse of the Billy Goat. But Glyber Torres is No. 3 on MLB Pipeline's list - (which is not Baseball America's list or Keith Law's list; man, these are like competing belts in pro wrestling) - and, get this, it's all based on his performance in the Arizona Fall League. That's nuts. Remember Eric Duncan? He killed in Arizona. Slade Heathcott? A scorpion king. Balls fly out of that desert air, and every February, the Yankees drink the Kool-Aid on some kid who turned heads on the Peoria Javelinas. Anyway, we placed 7 prospects on the top 100, tied with Atlanta. Future Hall of Famer Andrew Benintendi is No. 1, and Yoan Moncada is 2. The Cubs, for all their whining, still had five. (That's what 20 years of losing builds.)

Luis Severino has been working on mechanics with Pedro Martinez. Good for them. I've said this before: We should sign Pedro as a coach, consultant, door man, bartender or - best idea - a YES announcer. Bear with me on this. First, Pedro is funny. Second, he certainly knows baseball. Third, and most importantly, we'll turn him. Money is the greatest brainwash. (Mad Dog Mattis says he'll get more with a pack of cigarettes than a waterboard.) After a few years with Michael Kay, Pedro would be singing along with Yankee jingles, living to bark a promo for Cellino and Barnes. It'll be a psychological victory, which, frankly, we need. As for Severino, we gotta keep reminding ourselves that he's only 22 - same age as the immortal Babe Benintendi.

You never have too many logos. (Note to self: More logos!) The Scranton Railriders - (formerly the Red Barons and the Empire State Railriders, when they played on the NY State Thruway) - have adopted a second logo - Baby Bombers. Good for them. I still remember when they held the contest to name the team, as if it were Lassie's new puppy. "Railriders" won over the Scranton Blast, the Scranton Black Diamond Bears, the Scranton Porcupines, the Scranton Fireflies and my fave, the Scranton Trolly Frogs. I'm not making this up. Baby Bombers, huh? Okay with me, until the mother ship signs Nick Swisher and sends him down for another go. That will look a little weird, no? But Burnt-Out Bombers isn't quite so inspiring. And Trolly Frogs lose again.

The Yankees have been hosting "Captains Camp" in Tampa, where prospects mix with legends such as Tino, Andy and A-Rod. They learn which fork to use, how to calculate a 25 percent tip and techniques on approaching babes in the box seats. In the end, Jeet takes everybody out for dinner. Gift basket, maybe? Good deal, all around. We've come a long way from Billy Connors.

  1. How DARE they mention the lowly Gleyber in the same paragraph as St. Benintendi!! Scum!! Ingrates!!

Anyway, we made it all the way to Sun-day, again - - with no playoff games (at least, ones that count)....and the score, in the first inning, is: ACLU, 1, tRUMP, 0!! Goose egg. How does that feel, Mr. Popular-Vote Loser?? Nyaah!! Go, ACLU!! LB (No J)

  2. Oh yeah, if I were on that Scranton team, I'd be proud to put this logo on my uniform.

Maybe they could get some of those nifty pinstripe-bill hats to go with it?

  3. Why on earth would anyone want to call a team something other than Trolly Frogs?????

  4. CAN'T OUR PITCHING COACH (ROTHCHILD) TEACH SEVERINO WHAT HE NEEDS TO KNOW ABOUT MECHANICS?....WE HAVE TO RELY ON PEDRO F@CKING MARTINEZ???..... UNREAL....AND BTW, I LOVE THE REFUGEE BAN!...LOVE IT, LOVE IT, LOVE IT, LOVE IT!..... CAN'T BE NICEY, NICEY ANYMORE....LOVE IT.

  5. Neither you, nor your beloved Leader have learned anything about what really has made this country great, all-caps. Too bad they don't teach civics much, anymore....Sad, as the spoiled, narcissistic buffoon with the orange comb-over would say, himself.

Also, if you have been paying attention to baseball for the past three decades and are a Yankee fan, you might well hate Pedro Martinez, but if you don't realize that he HAD TO HAVE a really high pitching-IQ, then you don't understand the game fully. I have to agree with Duque, if Pedro wants to pass along some of his pitching knowledge to young pitchers, who in the hell would be opposed to that??

We might just do well, though, to persuade our own El Duque (the Hernandez version) to work with young pitchers - - I've never seen a more wily, crafty pitcher than El Duque.

Also, all-caps: I wouldn't leave the country - - they might not oet you back in - - you never know. They don't even seem to know who's in charge, and who ordered what??
Furthermore, what about a ban on Buddhists, next?? They believe in non-viiolence - - I'm sure that would irk Mr. White Supremacy Bannon....then we would lose some players from the Far East....or, shucks, those Catholics - - especially those South & Central American Catholics, blast 'em - - why don't we keep THEM out?? Then we really wouldn't have any baseball to waste time on, huh?? LB (No J)

  6. SORRY anonymous, BUT IN CASE YOU HAVEN'T NOTICED....THE WORLD HAS CHANGED!....ALL I KNOW IS, AS THIS BAN TAKES EFFECT, I FEEL SAFER, AND YOU SHOULD TOO.....THIS SHOULD BE NO SURPRISE.... THIS IS PART OF WHAT TRUMP RAN ON, THIS IS WHAT HE PROMISED...THIS IS PART OF WHAT GOT HIM ELECTED......NOW THAT IT'S TIME TO IMPLEMENT IT, PEOPLE ARE HEMMING AND HAWING..... IT'S NOT AN EASY SITUATION IN THE BEGINNING AT THE MOMENT, BUT IT'S A BOLD MOVE THAT IS GOING TO MAKE US SAFER..... IN TODAY'S WORLD, I LOVE THIS BAN................. AS FAR AS PEDRO HELPING OUT SEVERINO, I AM MERELY POINTING OUT ROTHCHILD'S SHORTCOMING'S AS A PITCHING COACH. NOVA COULDN'T GET OVER THE HUMP, PINEDA CAN'T SEEM TO GET OVER THE HUMP, EOVALDI REALLY COULDN'T GET OVER THE HUMP EITHER.... IF PEDRO CAN HELP SEVY, FINE, BUT DO WE REALLY HAVE TO RELY ON HIM????...... AND PLEASE, WHEN IT COMES TO YANKEE BASEBALL, AND THE GAME ITSELF, YOU NEED TO RAISE YOUR GAME A BIT TO TRADE BARBS WITH ME, HONESTLY.....NO DISRESPECT.

    ReplyDelete
  7. You feel SAFER, when your ignoramus stooge you helped install is inflaming hatred against us, all over the world?? Great....What's the danged point in even "trading barbs" with you?? Most of the time, you sound like a spoiled adolescent in a man's body, just like your hero. I'll put my Yankee experience & knowledge agsinst yours, any day of the week.

Yes, the world is changing, and not for the better; during the campaign, your Fearless Leader (Heil! All Heil!!) accused Obama of founding ISIS by stirring up resentment against us - - which wasn't true - - and now, he's doing that very thing himself - - in SPADES!! Look in the mirror, ALL-CAPS - - and see if you can't spot the FOOL grinning back at you.

P.S. Pitching isn't just mechanics; I'm no big fan of Rothschild (but at least I can spell his name)....there's at least as much strategy involved, as well. Perhaps you handn't noticed.

I don't doubt your Yankee fandom, but you would do well to stick to that, rather than showing your ignorance, and apparent mental age. LB (No J)

  8. I USED TO PITCH IN COLLEGE, (ON HALF A RIDE), SO I'M FULLY AWARE OF YOUR BRILLIANT PITCHING TUTORIAL...LOL...... anonymous, HERE IS A VALUABLE BIT OF ADVICE FOR YOU.....YOU NEED TO KEEP YOUR POLITICAL VIEWS MORE "UNDER WRAPS"..... YOU CAN NOT FIND IT IN YOU TO RESPECT ANYONE ELSE'S OPINION IF IT DIFFERS FROM YOURS..... I RESPECT EL DUQUE, (AND OTHER'S) OPPOSITION OF TRUMP......BUT YOU?..... YOU JUST LITERALLY BECOME A DOUCHEBAG BULLY, AND AT YOUR AGE, IT JUST ISN'T VERY BECOMING OF YOU.....GROW UP, YOU'RE OVER 70 YEARS OLD....ACT LIKE IT.

  9. Come on, guys. This is pointless. Nobody's going to win this argument. You're just going to get angrier and angrier, and no one will come away feeling good about it.

I have strong opinions about Trump, but I'm trying to hold back. After all, this is a Yankee blog. The villain here is Hal Steinbrenner, who has more money than all of us put together will ever know in our lives, and who has the audacity to poor-mouth, whenever possible. When you want to rip Trump, or Pelosi, or anybody - think of Steinbrenner taking a steaming dump on your mom, and get back to the real front.

    ReplyDelete
  10. OK, Duque, I will try to hold back, out of respect for you, and nearly all the others on this blog - - all in all, a highly-intelligent and perceptive group....I won't however, promise to let any & all inanities go unanswered.

I DO find it really amusing that I am now a "douchebag bully" - - that's a really novel idea. There are many views on this blog I haven't been in accordance with - - but I respect almost all of them, and the people who have written them, as well....pretty much all of them - - but what's happening in this country can't really be easily ignored - - and it is going to have an effect on everything in our lives, including baseball.

I am finding it virtually impossible to respect BOTH the present management of the country, and certainly that of the Yankees - - from Prince Hamlet on down.

Next, I want to see a photo of him in that ST hat, smiling - - how's that for a wish that will probably never come to fruition?? LB (No J)

  11. Duque is right, Hal is the only man we should hate here. And anyone tied to Boston. And anyone who dares criticize John and Suzyn. And Joggie Cano. And Nova. Fuck Nova.

  12. Don't forget Cash-Puss & Joey Blue-Binders, Leinstery - - they deserve our derision, as well - - and - - OMG!! what about Trost & Levine?? Losers, all.... LB (No J)

  13. THIS SITE IS EL DUQUE'S MASTERPIECE, AND IT'S HIS RIGHT TO INSERT POLITICS WHENEVER HE SEES FIT...... HOWEEVER, ANYTIME POLITICS ARE BANDIED ABOUT AMONGST PEOPLE, IT'S A SAFE BET, NOT EVERYONE IS GOING TO AGREE....... BUT TO ATTACH THE NAMES "MORON", "IGNORANT", "SPOILED ADOLESCENT", "FOOL", AND MANY OTHERS, JUST VOICING MY OPINION, I THOUGHT WERE UNCALLED FOR, AND THE REASON I RETALIATED AND COINED THE NICKNAME FOR anonymous......
WITH THAT SAID, I WANT TO APOLOGIZE TO anonymous.....THIS IS NO FUN GOING BACK AND FORTH LIKE THIS..... AS DUQUE SUGGESTS, LETS TAKE OUR AGGRESSION OUT ON HAL,CASH, JOE G., THE RED SOX, AND THE METS...... IT REALLY SHOULD BE ALL ABOUT THE YANKEES..... PEACE, anonymous.

  14. First, all-caps - - just to make things clear: I am NOT the one who said the other day that you were offending people on this site - - and if I'm not mistaken, I believe you called that person the same name you called me tonight....just so you know, that was not me - - I have been trying to restrain myself. If you read the piece from a couple of days ago, you would see I had a perfectly civil discussion with LBJ on the merits of the ACLU....I can keep the tone commensurate with whatever you like - - the only thing that startled me was not that "name" - - it was being called a "bully": this is truly the first time in my life I have been accused of being on that end of bullying - - me, a lifelong nerd, who was bullied many times as a child, mostly because I was bookish, and didn't hate school.
Damn straight, El Duque follows politics, as do I, and I love his political references and little jabs, and I hope he DOESN'T stop doing them. This blog features the most skillful blend I have seen anywhere of sports, politics, and pop culture references - - all the way from the 60s till today, fgs!! I hope he NEVER stops doing this - - I have bought and read his books, as well, and I feel that JuJu Rules is worthy of some kind of award, if I had the power to give it (and two of my 3 degrees are in English & writing, fwiw)....Last thing I want to do is spoil this blog.
What set me off, particularly, is that you could "love, love, love, love" what's happening now - - it scares the @#$%$ outta' me, and destabilizes the world.
Having said that, I pledge to TRY to keep things civil and repectful from here on, if I can make myself....but I love the way this blog ties the Yankees to other happenings, and I hope that never stops - - at least, until I reach 100, or so.
No apology necessary, from this end, but I accept the gesture, and will do my best to match it. LB (No J)

  15. This is an amazing emotional moment. I could see Bert Convey playing either of you.

  16. I can't find a better symbol of the year 2017 than a running "debate" between Anonymous and Anonymous.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Nah, Duque, not a game-show host - - unless it's Chuck Barris (whose stuff I love); honestly, though, I want Keith Olbermann to play me - - even though I don't look anything like him - - I admire him to pieces - - flaws & all....but really, I'm just a fat, old guy in a Yankee hat, and a plaid shirt (preferably a Ralph Lauren, which I have collected from ebay).
I'm only anonymous because I don't have any of those account options offered - - Google, or any of those others, and there are soooo many nasty trolls who have come out of the woodwork these days, I would probably get death-threats if I just gave my real name....I used to post on MLB.com's Yankees blog as "MickLives55", a few years back - - and in the Daily News, too, actually. 18. Lower case anonymous,

I can't hate Cash, he's a product of the Steinbrenners. The first part of his career he was given the blank check and direct orders by George. Then Hal took the big money away from him, handed him the pennies he found between the couch cushions and told him to fix things. He's more of a pitiful figure than a hate-able one.

As far as Joey Blue-Binders goes, that's a terrific name and I'm using it from now on. And he's not a villainous man to hate. He's a black hole of hope. He brings me nothing but despair and pessimism at which I occasionally lash out at. Occasionally being every time he picks up the bullpen phone and bungles the game away.

All that being said, I won't try to stop anyone else from hating them.

  19. CHUCK BARRIS WAS FUNNY..... THE GONG SHOW HAD IT'S DAY..... I REMEMBER BERT CONVEY'S FACE CLEARLY, BUT WHAT GAME SHOWS DID HE HOST?....I THINK HE DID A FEW OF THEM.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Bert Convey only existed as a stereotypical punch line for B-actors.

Just for the record: In your finest moments, neither of you guys could lift Chuck Barris's gong.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Nope. Couldn't life that gong; probably couldn't life Big Red, either....but I coulda' lifted Chuckie!
Betcha' one thing, though: on our best day, any of the three of us above-mentioned (you, me, all-caps) coulda' made JP Morgan bang that thang (or Murray Langston - - aka, Bag-Head - - probably even Buddy Hack-It).

One of my fondest wishes is to own a complete set on video of Gong Shows; won't happen, of course, because Sony is sitting on them, because of clearance problems with all the music they contained; too bad OVOFL (our very own Fearless Leader) doesn't own them - - he doesn't care WHOSE music he plays (Royalties?? I ain't payin' no stinkin' royalties!!) Ah, well, couldn't resist completely - - so sorry. LB (No J)
