Yanks add 206 strikeouts, another too-old-and-too-slow, to 2017 batting order

Chris Carter - a career .218 hitter and a certified disaster in the field - is about to sign a one-year deal with the Evil former Empire - marking the first bad omen of 2017, the first indication that something is wrong with Greg Bird's recovery, and the first sign that Tyler Austin will never get a fair shot at proving himself.

The Yankees just took 500 at bats from their young players - the ones on which they've been selling hope - and donated them to a 30-year-old free swinger, who last season produced the seventh highest strikeout total in baseball history, and who wasn't even tendered a contract this winter by his old team, the mighty Milwaukee Brewers. Yeah, he led the NL in homers, with 41, but good grief - he only drove in 94 runs. Take away the homers, and he was barely out there.

It's rare that a signing - Hal spending money - conjures such an odious sense of despair. But did you think that Chase Headley struck out too often last season? He fanned 118 times, tied with Starlin Castro for team lead. That's a half-season of Carter!

Remember how awful A-Rod was last July, before they pulled his plug? In 224 at bats, he struck out 67 times. As bad as he was, A-Rod still didn't whiff as regularly as Carter.

Imagine all the times ahead, when all we need is to put the bat on the ball... and... and... excuse me, I gotta throw up.

  1. I saw this this afternoon and vomited into my batting helmet. What a waste of roster space. What are the odds he hits 20 HRs or less in 2017?

    Remember Berkman....always remember Berkman.

AARON JUDGE (DON'T FORGET, AARON HICKS IS SITTING THERE WAITING TO TAKE AT BATS FROM JUDGE TOO) ..... WHAT A DISASTER..I ALREADY WAS IN A BAD MOOD TODAY, WHEN THE 2017 TEAM WIN PROJECTIONS CAME OUT....... NEW YORK YANKEES- 81 WINS...... MOVE OVER JOHN, THERE'S MORE PUKE ON THE WAY.

  3. I am dry-retching, because I already threw up everything in my stomach, when Mike Effing PENCE confirmed Betsy EFFING DeVos and PUBLIC education secretary - - even after over 1,000 students from her alma mater, Calvin (a religious college) signed a letter, begging the Senate not to confirm her. TWENTY of the senators took BIG donations from her, and then voted her in. (Excuse me, the convulsions are starting again....)
all-caps: Would you please go back and check my comments on yesterday's Enemy, Revealed, II, if you have a chance?? I wrote to you specifically, in order to come to a better understanding, if possible. LB (No J)

  4. I want to know where the empty rich section moat-protected seats in the new yankee stadium (lower caps intended) were manufactured. Down to the last nut, bolt, screw, and dab of glue. Like the stone from Dr. King's statue in Washington, my guess is China. China! CHINA! This has nothing to do with Chris Carter, but I don't care. I DON'T CARE!

  5. I WENT BACK anonymous AND READ YOUR COMMENTS...... IT'S OK MAN.....THE FUNNY THING IS I HAVE ALWAYS BEEN A GOOD SPELLER THROUGHOUT MY LIFE....(NICKEL ASIDE)...LOL..... I MUST ADMIT I AM STILL PRETTY AMAZED THAT YOU WOULD BE SO UPSET OVER MY 32 YEAR TRUMP RUN IN OFFICE, POST....IT OBVIOUSLY WAS A LARK..... POLITICS ASIDE, LIKE EVERYONE ELSE ON THIS SITE, IT'S PRETTY OBVIOUS EVERYONE KNOWS AND LOVES THEIR YANKEE BASEBALL.... BUT THIS CASHMAN IS MAKING ME (AND I'M SURE YOU), CRAZY...... WE HAVE BEEN SOLD ON YOUTH NOW, AND HERE WE GO AGAIN SIGNING SOMEONE THAT I HAVE A FEELING WILL BE ANOTHER "ANCHOR" WEIGHING US DOWN...LIKE EL DUQUE SAYS, HE STRIKES OUT LIKE CRAZY, CAN'T FIELD, CAN'T RUN, AND MOST LIKELY WONT MAKE CONTACT WHEN THE GAME IS ON THE LINE.......... IT'S EXASPERATING.

  6. You got that right - - this is precisely what is wrong with Cash-Puss's signings - - and they MUST be mandated by El Cheapo. Therefore, help me with my proposed petition: Prince Hal: RELEASE YOUR TAX-RETURNS!!

and just in case you really find it hard to grasp why people are so uptight over you-know-who and his band of merry billionaires, please DO go back and read Kevin Baker's Politico article which cited this web-site - - I really think Kevin nailed perfectly why people are so upset. Lifetime friendships are being torn apart, and family members are vowing never to speak to each other, again, over this divisive crap....and these are mainly people who don't even usually get into politics - - like my wife, for instance. Peace. LB (No J)

  7. Who are they losing off the 40-man roster or can a player be moved to the 60-day DL at this time? Will be pissed if the Yankees lose that player off waivers. -m

  8. Chris Carter signing = Disaster. I don't need to use a verb when I can use a symbol. Wow. It's like Cashman just had a relapse or something, like he had 90 days off of the crack and then he just said "fuck it" and whipped a stem out of his Yankee backpack and took a big hit. WHY WHY WHY??? Or maybe I should phrase it this way instead: WHY?

  9. They got him cheaply like Chapman in 2016. They'll surely flip him come the trading deadline as well and they will get a ton for him if especially if he ends up hitting HRs like Sanchez. It'll be hard for him to not to in Yankee Stadium really unless they discover he's prone to a Texiera type shift and thus he'll hit way below the Medoza line and will be fired two months in. Either way, it does make me question if Bird is ready or not. I really doubt he was considering his year long injury and all that.

  10. I was prepared for the season to suck. I am a Yankees' fan. So be it.

I was ready for injuries in spring training (like what happened to Bird last year, and whatever it is that goes wrong with pitchers).

I already know I'll be sitting here, yelling at the TV, radio, or computer broadcast, when Girardi does something "by the book" (and I know it won't work before he tries it, and it really blows).

I mentally embraced the idea that Ellsbury and Headley were set to be 2 of the 9 regulars in the every day lineup. I can't really live with that, but I am a man of peace, and I can't afford to throw anything else at the TV.

HOWEVER: The Chris Carter thing . . . I was caught short. I now see darkness, a void into which the team disappears along about May 20, and -- what's worse -- ME not paying attention to MLB for the first time since 1960.

Jeepers. Does this mean I'm going to have to watch the national news?

  11. whatever you do, Joe, stay away from the national news. It'll make your blood angry. I've sworn it off for a full 18 hours and I think I'm feeling better as a new sense of ignorant bliss descends.

Maybe the sign-and-flip scenario is the most optimistic hope for Carter's career with the Yankees. In any case, he will be taking at bats from Judge, Bird and Austin so their development will be further delayed. Or Gardner/Ellsbury becomes a platooner, and we put a bumbling clod out in left field against lefties.

  12. Is this some kind of sabermetric thing? as if strikeouts don't matter anymore?

Like duque wrote, I also fear this is telling us something about Bird's health.

  13. ......I CAN'T SEE THE "SIGN AND FLIP" THEORY, EVER HAPPENING WITH CARTER..... NO WAY..... HE JUST HIT 41 HOMERS, AND NO TEAM WANTED HIM!... NO ONE!.... HE WAS READY TO BOLT TO JAPAN!..... WHAT DOES THAT TELL YOU ?
P.S.) THE 18 DOUBLE PLAYS THAT EL DUQUE UNCOVERED ABOUT CARTER IS EVEN MORE HORRIFYING THAN HIS BATTING AVERAGE...
