Introducing the Monthly Back Page Tab Tournament of Hype

For many centuries, it was believed that George Steinbrenner's cranky and outrageous behavior stemmed from his cold-blooded fixation with "winning" the back pages of the New York tabloids.

The more back pages featuring the Yankees, the most interested would be you and me - the general public - and thus, the more tickets and TV eyeballs would the Bombers secure.

With that in mind, let's inaugurate the THE MONTHLY BACK PAGE TAB TOURNAMENT OF HYPE, the cleanest barometer yet devised of whether the Yankees are winning the war for New York City.

Each day, you'll see the two latest entries from our "rushin' judges" - the gin-tongued, pun-obsessed editors of the Post and Daily News. We will keep a running score above the fold, or somewhere.

After eight days of competition in March, here are the standings.

JETS 6
METS 5
KNICKS 2
GIANTS 1

YANKEES 1
RANGERS 0

Observation: It's time for Girardi to break a water cooler.
