Duque is rational, knowledgeable, positive, careful, kind and wrong.
It is time to panic.
1. Bird will be out a month, minimum. If he tries to come back too early ( and he will ), he'll wind up with plantar fasciitis.
2, Sanchez will be out until the all star game. The 10 day DL was just a stop-gap measure, until the Yankees can truly assess this bicep injury. And, by the way, what might that do to his throwing ability? When NFL players have torn similar muscles, they are done for the year.
3. Judge will be out until he shows he can do something at the plate, which may be never. Hicks is outplaying him right now, and the big guy just cannot be our DH/Pinch runner.
4. Tanaka is a mystery. One can only hope that mystery does not get "solved" through arm surgery. Many of us have worried about the Yankees treatment regimen for him ( " he just needs rest, despite the small tear" ), since last season.
5. Pineda is, pure and simple, a bum who hurts this team in every appearance. He should be traded for pretty much " a body, any body." Time to elevate one of the young guys, and hold onto the railing.
6. I , for one ( possibly the only one ), have yet to build much faith/hope in Luis Severino. I thought he looked really good for four innings the other day, and almost began to believe. Then, he tanked. So, the jury is still out.
7. With CC being our last, best hope, I am taking to drinking at 10:00am.
We still have Gardy, who is hot. Jacoby who is cooling off. Headley who is smart ( going to LF with his at bats, wherever possible ) , Starlin who won't walk, and Chris Carter at first. Add in Romine and we have a pretty unimpressive offense. Torreyes is admirably filling in, until we see Didi in late June.
Yes, we are going to see what this team is made of. Can we " hold the fort" until re-enforcements arrive? Or are we going to see smoke and fire from a great distance in last place?
It is time for unexpected to heroes to "step up."
We're cooked for at least a month or so. Pinata is what he's always been, a head case. Jettison. Severino is not a started, period. We could use him in the bullpen, because so far the bullpen isn't worth much. Warren should become a starter again. He's not great, but he's better than half of the current four-man.
ReplyDeleteThe offense is going to be terrible. Just resign yourself to it. I'll give Tenaka and CC some time, but without a lot of hope beyond mediocrity with flashes of betterness. Betances remains the guy we should have traded instead of Miller, but we wouldn't have received as much back. So now we have an inconsistent young guy who, compared to Miller, will lose us as many games as the prospects may win us. Maybe. Someday.
I predicted 92 wins in a surprise performance, but hadn't counted on half the team going down with tweaks and squawks. That's out the window now. .500 will be an achievement, all things considered.
And for anyone thinking I'm being negative, I'm not. I'm actually being positive with that.
Severino is not a STARTER, it shoulda said. Sorry.
ReplyDeleteP.S....This would, of course, be a great time to bring up a couple of youngsters and see if they can spark anything while giving them some experience that will bode them well in the future. However, that will never happen. We'll trot out the known mediocrities and strike-out machines that have bigger contracts.
ReplyDeleteChange may be the one constant, but not with this organization.
I agree John M, absolutely!
ReplyDeleteOnly FIVE games into the season and I already feel like we have nothing to lose, WOW!
I honestly believe that Roger Clemens now would be more effective than Pineda and Severino. I mentioned it as a joke a couple days ago, but I have since talked myself into believing it. Now would also be a prime time to bring back Tino Martinez to play 1st. He'll probably strike out just as much as Carter, but will save more of Headley's errant throws.
ReplyDeleteMY NIGHTMARE SCENARIO BEFORE THE SEASON WAS WORRYING ABOUT THE FEW GAMES WHERE,
ReplyDelete#1). CHRIS CARTER IS IN THE LINEUP
#2). CHASE HEADLEY IS IN THE LINEUP
#3). AUSTIN ROMINE IS IN THE LINEUP
AND...
#4). AARON HICKS IS IN THE LINEUP

IT'S OPENING DAY!!!
