Yankeegeddon: " For the first time since at least 1998, Quinnipiac University has found, more New York City baseball fans liked the Mets than the Yankees."

"... Although it was a narrow victory — 45 percent to 43 percent, well within the margin of error — it shows that winning ballgames remains the key to winning the hearts of Big Apple sports fans."

Fivethirtyeight crunches some numbers. Here's all you need to know:

Over the last five years, the Yankees have blown a 41 point lead in popularity over the Mets.

So, can you remind us again why we're not supposed to complain about the Hal/Cash regime...?

  1. My greatest fear, at least since George Steinbrenner died, has been that the Yankees would be sold, that the family would lose control of the team, that we would revert to some CBS Redux era. After watching them in action, though, for the past 6 or 7 years, I would honestly love to see Hal sell the team to another gazillioniare, maybe one with Silicon Valley dough and a real urge to win. I'd like to see the Steinbrenners gone, Cashman gone, Randy Levine not only gone, but exiled to another land where he must wander endlessly and pluck his sustenance from local plant life and any vermin he can trap with his hands. I never though I'd see this day, but it has come. If you don't want to win, Hal, give it up for somebody who DOES. I know it's nice to have a big ATM/tax write-off, but we all know your heart is not into it. Think of what you can do with one huge payout? George will forgive you from the Heaven that does not exist. Or Hell, in his case. George will forgive you. You know why? He wanted to win.

  2. 13 BIT...... THAT IS SO DEAD ON.....I COULDN'T HAVE SAID IT ANY BETTER...... THE BEAUTY OF GEORGE WAS HE DESPISED THE METS AS MUCH AS THE RED SOX, AND PROVED HE WOULD DO ANYTHING TO BEAT THEM BOTH....... HE MAY BE ROLLING OVER IN HIS GRAVE RIGHT NOW, WATCHING THIS EASY TO SEE COMING, DEMISE OF OURS...... IT NOT ONLY HAS US WELL BEHIND AGAINST OUR HATED DIVISION RIVALS, BUT ALSO HAS US AS 2ND IN OUR CITY, TO A TEAM THAT IS FLAWED, AND NOTORIOUSLY CHEAP....... IT REALLY IS A DISGRACE WHAT HAL, AND CASH HAVE DONE HERE...... WINNING HAS BEEN PUT ON THE BACK BURNER, WHICH FOR A FRANCHISE AS ICONIC AND RICH AS THIS, IS UNACCEPTABLE...... DIE HARD YANKEE FANS DESERVE BETTER.

  3. Has anyone ever seen Hal at a game? Not a special event but enjoying a real game from the owner's box? Used to see George all the time.

I suppose it is possible that Hal forbids his image be transmitted to the jumbotron, the way his Dad's was. Afraid of the fan's reaction, maybe??? When fans saw that George was attending a game, they cheered. What would they do if they saw Hal attending a game?

  4. If I saw Hal at a game I would throw my "doggy waste" bag at him.

Cashman is the Kelly Anne Conway of the Yankees and, therefore, worse, as we have consistently ranted.

  5. Sell the team to a consortium led by Jay-Z and have him hire Derek as GM.

  6. George wanted to win so badly that after the 70s he made a raft of terrible trades and horrible signings that any experienced fan knew were crap from the moment they were announced. Only his suspension from baseball allowed the great mid-to-late-90s to be assembled in his absence.

I don't miss him. He was a bully and a bad judge of talent, overall, and then felt so guilty he often turned around and showered his victims with favors, dough, and jobs for life. He put the Zoo in the Bronx Zoo.

My opinion is that the people who love him now weren't there for most of it. Could be wrong. Also, keep in mind that I've always thought Torre is preposterously overrated and was lucky to have stepped in dog doo when he was first hired. Plus, I never liked "Seinfeld," so obviously I tend to deviate from the mainstream.
