Obviously, he'll soon lose his rotation spot to Jaime Garcia. The fact that Garcia on Friday lasted just 4.2 innings and gave up five earned runs - leading to a blowout lost - that doesn't matter. He'll stay in the rotation. He's a time-tested veteran.
As for Montgomery? He'll be sent to the bullpen - or maybe Scranton. Disappointed, he might have a few rough outings. The Yankees will say, "See? We did the right thing, dropping him." And we will ride
another set of sad questions to which we all know the answer:
ReplyDeletemen on 2nd and 3rd with no outs in the top of the 6th, will the Yankees score? will the Yankees have a big inning?
Didi pops up to the infield
Judge is intentionally walked
hah, Headley proves me wrong with a sac fly to center. 1 run in.
Frazier works a tough walk
Ellsbury bangs one off the wall (catchable by a rightfielder who seemed to have Bobby Abreau disease?) and clears the bases. 3 runs in.
Big inning! Turns out I didn't know the answer. But after the past week, I thought I did.
and Rockin' Ronnie puts the cherry on top with a sharp single to left. 5 run inning!
ReplyDeleteWhich leads me to ask whether Rockin' Ronnie would be a better everyday option than Frazier, the Todd version. There are times when Torreyes looks overpowered, but he keeps his average up and gets some key hits. Hey, I've got an idea. Let's bring up our best 3rd baseman from the minor leagues and see what he can do. Maybe he can hit better than .207?
You are a voice of sanity amongst the sports writers who exist to confirm bad decisions.
ReplyDeleteWhat are your thoughts on the Yankees refusal to force veterans coming off the DL to do rehab minor league games?
Holiday, Sabathia, Chapman etc have all come off the DL playing poorly (at first) costing the team wins.
Seems like Cashman and Girardi are willing to dirty up rookies, but are unwilling to manage veterans.
@ EL Duque Can you create an additional Daily Hate Girirdi forum after last nights Managing Debacle Im way done with this guy!!!! Im sure im not the only one
ReplyDeleteRR--excellent point. Notice also how Girardi Yanks young pitchers if they issue their first walk in a game, but leaves veterans like Tanaka and Sabathia in the game until they've surrendered double digits in hits and runs.
ReplyDeleteGood grief they did it. Monty to AAA! Seriously, WTF?
ReplyDeleteBEFORE THE GAME, I WAS INSTANTLY AGGRAVATED HEARING THAT GARDNER WAS THE DH FOR TODAY.
ReplyDeleteWHAT SENSE DOES THAT MAKE TO MAKE ONE OF OUR BEST FIELDERS, WHO ACTUALLY MAY HAVE WON THE GAME FOR US LAST NIGHT WITH HIS GLOVE, DH FOR US TODAY???
IT WAS STRAIGHT FROM THE GIRARDI HEAD SCRATCHING PLAYBOOK.
GARY SANCHEZ IS A WRECK BEHIND THE PLATE RIGHT NOW, AND HE'S STRUGGLING AT THE PLATE TOO.....BUT....!
HE STILL CAN BE A DANGEROUS HITTER, AND HE MUST BE THE DH WHEN HE DOESN'T CATCH!!!
WHY DOES GIRARDI REFUSE TO DO THIS?
THANK GOD WE WON TODAY (AFTER NOT HITTING A LICK FOR HALF THE GAME).
MOST DAYS, WE ARE NOT THIS LUCKY.
BIG GAMES ARE COMING....BIG SERIES MUST BE WON NOW.
CAN WE PLEASE PLAY OUR BEST HITTERS ON MOST OF THE GAMES COMING UP??? ...PLEASE???
GARDNER, SANCHEZ, JUDGE, CLINT FRAZIER, AND DIDI ALL MUST PLAY IN THE SAME LINEUP,(INCLUDING DH), IN ALL OR MOST OF THESE NEXT 13 GAMES OR WE ARE SHORTING OURSELVES.
SENDING MONTGOMERY TO THE BULLPEN OR BACK TO SCRANTON AT THIS POINT NEARLY SEEMS TO BE BORDERING ON INSANITY..... HE HAS HAD ABOUT 11 GOOD STARTS COMPARED TO 4 IFFY ONES.
MY BLOOD IS STARTING TO BOIL OVER THESE LAST CASHMAN DEALS...
TODD FRAZIER
JAIME GARCIA
CASHMAN AND GIRARDI HAVE BECOME OUR BIGGEST OBSTACLES.
LETS GET THEM OUT OF FUCKTOWN!
(dialog lifted from Treasure of Sierra Madre and adapted for use by Yankee management)
ReplyDelete"Pitchers? We ain't got no Pitchers. We don't need no Pitchers. I don't have to show you any stinking Pitchers."
We don't need no stinkin' Jordan Montgomery, not when we have the legendary lugnut Mr. Whatshisname who wasn't good enough for the Twins or the Braves this year and has been bouncing around baseball for 10 years without doing anything particularly special unless you count mediocre as special.
Geezum Freaking Christ. Who's the evil idiot in charge of this operation? It appears that the goal is to restock with veteran mediocres so as to forestall the failure of young players with the failure of old players. God forbid the young guys get a legit opportunity. That's not allowed for the New York Fuckin Yankees because the ghost of George Steinbrenner demands that the ship go down with guys who look good hitting into doubleplays.
Montgomery was on an innings limit. This is not a surprise. He will be called up in September...if we make the playoffs, he might be a lefty spot reliever.
ReplyDeleteINNINGS LIMIT OR NOT, WE JUST LOST OUR 2ND BEST STARTER!!!
ReplyDeleteIt is insane tossed him and keep Garcia. Garcia will never make it to 5 innings. Write it on your note pads.
ReplyDeleteCashman... Girardi...this is fraud
ReplyDeleteMontgomery is on an innings limit.
ReplyDeleteThe same geniuses that gave us the Joba rules and ruined his career.
Let's hope this time turns out better.
I fear if we play Cleveland in the playoffs and the midges return...
Innings limit? Like the one that cost the Nats any chance for a WS ring? And the pitcher, what's his name, went under the knife anyway? THat innings limit?
ReplyDeleteGood grief.
Stop all this stupid strength training for pitchers. The ligaments can't take the stress. Take it back the way it used to be when Whitey pitched. We could go back to four man rotations and complete games with only the occasional need for surgery. Games would be complete in less than 2.5 hours. Save the game, dammit. This shirt is crazy!
ReplyDeleteChris Capuano, now that's a name that brings a shiver down my spine. Right up there with Jared Wright
ReplyDelete@KD...that was back in the day when pitchers didn't throw 95 mph+ every pitch. Pitchers now are expected to throw as hard as they can for a 100 pitch count. This is why there's 20 pitchers in the bullpen now (if you count injuries).
ReplyDeleteranger is right. The game has changed. Guys have to throw many more pitches, much harder now to go long.
ReplyDeleteAnd you know what? Even in the old days, terrific young pitchers blew out their arms all the times. It was just no big deal since they were being paid $2,000-$5,000 a pop.
KD mentions Whitey. Maybe the best thing that happened to Ford was getting drafted, keeping him from overthrowing for two years. The second best thing was Casey, who really limited his usage for the next seven.
Tell me, what do all these guys have in common: Joe Page, Bob Grim, Tom Sturdivant, Johnny Kucks, Bob Turley, Bill Stafford, Rollie Sheldon, Jim Bouton? All looked great when they came up, had a couple excellent years, and blew their arms out.
Al Downing was on the DL with arm trouble by 27. He came back—three years later, with the Dodgers. Stan Bahnsen was never the same after his rookie year. Even Mel Stottlemyre was done at 32.
You want these guys to last, you have to go easy with them.
Garcia doesn't look like anything other than he is, a veteran mediocrity. Which, if we hadn't tossed away prospects for Gray--one good game, so far...still not entirely convinced--would have left room for Monty. But no.
ReplyDeleteI like this team, as far as the players go. Wish them all the best and hope they all hit .300 and 40 HRs and never make an error.
The organization/management is a different story. Ee-yuck.
The comments above about Montgomery's innings limit are the most rational.
ReplyDeleteI know some people don't believe in those limits, but that's got to be why they are making this move. Yes, Montgomery has been better than Garcia is likely to be, but we'll have to hope for a few decent outings from Garcia in the interest of protecting Monty's future.
Re: Innings limits
ReplyDeleteLast time I looked he would still be pitching in the minors. They didn't send him on vacation so how does sending him down to limit his innings make sense? If anything facing lesser competition will allow him to stay in games longer. The Garcia trade was ridiculous.
Doug K.
They need innings from the big league spot.
ReplyDeleteSWB can afford a guy who is limited in innings.
...and r.i.p. Don Baylor. That man could take a pitch -- right in the shoulder.
SO, LET ME GET THIS "INNINGS LIMIT" THING STRAIGHT....
ReplyDeleteWE SENT MONTGOMERY DOWN SO HE DOESN'T THROW ANY MORE PITCHES.....
UNTIL HE PITCHES FOR THE SCRANTON TEAM???
.....BUT HE IS PHYSICALLY THROWING MORE PITCHES!...(AND IT'S NOT FOR THE BIG CLUB)!
JUST DL HIM FOR SOME BULLSHIT REASON.
IF YOU NOTICE, A LOT OF TEAMS ARE NOW DOING THIS WITH MANY OF THEIR PITCHERS.
10 DAY DL'S FOR KERSHAW
STRASBURG
DARVISH
AND MANY OTHERS.
THAT SHOULD BE THE WAY TO GO.
WE'RE ALWAYS BEHIND THE LEARNING CURVE.
Just saw this on RAB and now it makes sense:
ReplyDelete"Also, if you’re into such things, sending Montgomery down for at least ten days allows the Yankees to “buy” an extra year of control. Right now Montgomery is due to become a free agent at age 30 during the 2022-23 offseason. Ten days in the minors pushes that back to age 31 and the 2023-24 offseason. I don’t think that’s a big deal or motivation for the demotion at all. Buy the extra year for elite prospects. Everyone else isn’t worth the hassle."
Not saying it's right just saying that's an actual reason.
Doug K.
VERY INFORMATIVE DOUG K.....THAT DOES SHED SOME LIGHT.
ReplyDeleteSaw that too, Doug K. Odd that RAB poo-pooed that particular incentive to send Monty down. Too much hassle? Seriously, Mike? Too much hassle to save some cash that Hal can add to his hoard? Looks like Mike is a YES man too, unfortunately. That's about as much hassle as laying off an employee one week before he becomes vested in the Company pension. we know that never happens, right Mike?
