Stanton for Castro, Guzman and Devers?
Castro played well for us. But Glyber Torres is coming.
Guzman could be a great pitcher. But every young pitcher is arm surgery waiting to happen.
Devers - related to the Redsockian 3B - has a bright future. But he's far, far away.
I never imagined a price being so payable.

ReplyDelete13Bit ... thanks for asking. I had the "privilege" of listening to Boston Sports Radio on a long drive today, and I posted my comments on another thread a few hours ago.
In sum: At face value, this seems like a good deal, if not a very good deal. We just got the reigning NL MVP and Home Run leader for very little other than some of Hal's money. We're going to have a killer heart of the order. All our big guys will see decent pitches to hit.
For me, the kicker is, given that we lose Castro's salary, plus get $30MM in help from Jeter, this deal could still allow us to go under the luxury tax threshold. Remember, getting payroll under the luxury tax limit for just one year represents a substantial savings for several years thereafter. If that savings can be plowed into a fat pitching contract in 2019 for someone like Clayton Kershaw (or a younger version thereof), I'm all for it.
I also agree with those who've said it's FAR too early to declare victory. It looks good, "but".
But! If we can get ourselves a good #2-3 pitcher for 2018 (or re-sign CC for #4 or #5 and hope one of the prospects comes of age quickly), things will really look up.
I did say "Please. God. No." just one day ago, but that was before I saw the terms of this deal. Even if we get just 5 good years out of Giancarlo S., it seems worth doing.

ReplyDelete@13bit: Yes, it's strange. I guess I just like the terms of the deal. My earlier dread fear was that we'd give up a half-dozen name-brand prospects for this Marlins guy. But we didn't. We gave up Starlin Castro and some cash and two prospects who might be good. Two prospects who might be good but who weren't good enough to have been widely written about. I think we did the right thing.
Let's look at this another way. Please ask yourself this question: If this deal could have been done for pure cash, or if it could have been done for a simple swap of Stanton for Castro, plus the Marlins give the Yankees $30MM as part of the transaction, would you have done it?
I think you would have. I think anyone would have.
Assuming you agree, the only remaining question becomes: Is the long-term upside of the two prospects we traded worth more or worth less than the immediate-term upside we can expect from having Stanton in the line-up over the next 5 years?
We can debate it but, really, that's the only part of this that I think can be debated. If the trade had included Frazier, or Torres, or Jordan Montgomery, I'd start to dig in my heels. For me, however, all other things being equal, I'd take the guaranteed performance of an MVP over two unproven prospects. YMMV.
I had not realized that deal was finalized with those terms. Oh well, I love everybody and will line up to behind the crowd to service Brian and Hal.
ReplyDeleteI guess I balk at such a big, fat long contract on somebody who seems to have a high propensity for getting injured. I'd also like to see us exercise some situational hitting - get some guys who can smack singles and doubles, guys who salivate when they come to the plate with men on base, guys who are RBI machines.
Anyway, I stand chastened and corrected. Long live Cashman. He is always right. I never cared about the Yankees' payroll, anyway, so that's not an issue. Since we gave away pure dreck, it's a win-win, right? Right.

AS I KEEP STATING, THE "BIG BONUS" OF THIS DEAL (IN MY MIND) IS THE IMMEDIATE IMPLEMENTATION OF GLEYBER TORRES AT 2ND BASE. IT'S EXCITING AND I BELIEVE THIS KID WILL BE THE REAL DEAL, EVEN AT 2ND BASE.
I HAVE NEVER SEEN THE YANKEE ORGANIZATION SO HIGH ON A YOUNG KID LIKE THIS.
EVEN JETER WASN'T REALLY RUSHED LIKE THIS UNTIL GEORGE HAD A FIT ONE DAY (I BELIEVE AFTER TONY FERNANDEZ GOT HURT), AND YELLED, "WHO IS THAT KID WE CHOSE IN THE FIRST ROUND?...GET HIM THE HELL UP HERE!"
SINCE THEY ACQUIRED TORRES, THEY HAVE NOT HESITATED TO SHOOT HIM THROUGH 3 LEVELS, AND LASER FAST.

I just cut my cable two weeks ago. Unless I cave and go crawling back to RCN or Spectrum, I'll have to listen to games on the radio while wearing my sackcloth and ashes. Or, I could just get on the old D train and stand outside the stadium with a tin cup. I guess I have a few months to decide. I really don't want to pay for cable again, but I think MLBTV has a blackout rule, even if I pay for it. Oh man...I wonder who's going to be announcing? Is The Master done? Would they be that cruel?
