Three tenors, anyone?

Our Amtrak Adventure to Washington will give us the chance to make a firsthand judgement about next year's possible, once-our-self-imposed-salary-cap-is-lifted big free-agent acquisition.

It's what some people have dubbed the "Three Tenors" option: signing Bryce Harper.

Is this a good idea? Or something that will just stick us with yet another stratospheric salary for the indefinite future?

Would a Yankees Bryce Harper be the Superman, 2012 rookie-of-the-year, 2015 MVP, power-hitting, cannon-throwing Bryce who leaves us all in awe? Or the frequently injured, meltdown Bryce of 2014 and 2016?

And if we do decide to go for him, what then? Do we try to trade Clint Frazier for pitching? I'd hate to see that. But if we do it...

Anyway, the Yanks are not only playing .700 ball, they have opened up their biggest lead, ever, over what the rest of the world calls football:

Yankees 82, Soccer 76.

But World Cup, like winter, is coming.

  1. Harper is surly & egocentric. Doesn't deserve to wear pinstripes.

  2. I’ve long since subscribed to the theory the Yankees will trade Giancarlo this off season to LAD and go after Harper

  3. Bryce Harper's WAR goes up and down way too much from year to year. It's almost like trading him in for a newer more powerful Ellsbury. I rather have someone more consistent like Manny Machado as he seems more Cano-like than Ellsbury-ish.

But really is either player really necessary? Three years ago I'd wanted either or both as the team was pretty bad but now he have so much better. In fact, we have enough good players in AAA to make another ball club which could easily beat half of the league.

Although we could spend and have 5 or 6 home run killers on the same team it never seemed to work that well for other teams when they tired that. All we really need is another pair of good starters to be an historical team next year, our hitting seems set for a few years.

  4. Fred, being surly and egotistical has never been a disqualifying characteristic to being a "True Yankee"(™). There are more than a couple of monuments beyond center-field that attest to that. And, yes, Bryce has been inconsistent, but he put up a monster year at age 22 in 2015. And his lifetime OPS+ is 142. And he's only 25; he's still entering his prime!! AND his swing is built for Yankee Stadium!! And who among us doesn't want to run their fingers through his lush facial hair?? Hrrmm? Well?? What about all that!? WHAT ABOUT IT!?!?!?!!!??

  6. Robbie Cano....don't ya know...

  7. In fairness to Robbie, who was never a favorite of mine, do we know if this stuff really is a PED? He claims it was a doctor-prescribed diuretic.

But yeah, as I belatedly realized with Scranton, there is a huge, inherent risk in contracts of the length that he got, and that Harper probably will command.

All the more reason to get Clint up soon and see what he's got.

  8. we need pitching, not Harper. Jeez.

  9. In a few more years Food Stamps is going to have to open the vault for Judge, Severino, Sanchez, Bird, Gleyber, etc. Best we’re not bogged down with forty million per year for Harper and Manny in their declining years then. Get starting pitching!

  10. It doesn't matter how much of our money the Steinbrenners squander on talent. I do not care. I want an endless replay of the late 1990s! I want to win! To crush our enemies, see them driven before us, and to hear the lamentations of their women! The lamentation of an entire nation!

  11. Food Stamps has already opened the liniment and bandages vault for Bird.

  12. KD, Retired Stratman, I agree. I would much rather see us plug in Clint, and use free-agent money on, say, Patrick Corbin this off-season.

But can Coops show that kind of patience?

  13. he's a shiny new position player, Hoss. bet Coops won't be able to help himself. Like me with a fine Bourbon. Resistance is futile...

  14. It is hard to resist when it's such a shiny candy-like bauble. A big furry-faced super-shiny candy-like lefty-swinging bauble!
