Last night, for the first time--ever?--the New York Daily News' story on the Yankees game was filed by a wire service. This, of course, in the wake of a purge that claimed 50% of its editorial staff.
For decades, the paper followed a formula built on sex, crime, and the Yankees; an anonymous editor once put it less politely.
The current situation is suddenly so bad, so heartbreaking, so objectionable, that even Michael Kay is on the right side of it:
Deadspin asks, "How is this shit legal?" and fills in some infuriating background I didn't see anywhere else.
Anyway, boys, Play Ball! Can't wait to read tonight's fresh gamer by the Associated Press.
ReplyDeleteMustang, thanks for bringing this back to our attention. This is bad news on many, many levels.
The Daily News was pillaged to serve the greed of a few people. This should not be legal. Miserable fuckers should be up against a wall.
ReplyDeleteSomeone explain to me why we need Zack Britton?
ReplyDelete@Beauregard...because he's NOT Chasen Shreve.
ReplyDeleteDillon Tate, Josh Rogers & Cody Carroll to O's for Britton. It's going to be a prospect huggers' funeral parade here when Duque wakes up.
ReplyDeleteThe Sun will come out...Tanaka
ReplyDeleteMy God John still has it.
When I was a kid (during the Nixon administration) I would love to read the Daily News to look at the "public interest" stories regarding opening the city pools. Appropriately accompanied by pictures of local talent enjoying the pools.
ReplyDeleteSuch a shame the paper has gone so much into the ditch.
This Daily News business is horrendous.
ReplyDeleteBritton in second.
Hmmm I’m not so against trading these people I never heard of, but I thought you were supposed to improve a weakness not a strength. We’re the kid at the gym who only does bench press and never squats.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the info Mustang.
ReplyDeleteAnd goodbye to you, Chasen Shreve. Been nice knowing you.
I suspect that picking up Britton is yet another indication that Machine Gun Chapman is about to join Fats Waller Sanchez on the DL, with that barking knee.
ReplyDeleteAnd don't worry, Rufus: I'm sure Shreve is going nowhere now. No doubt, Coops and Ma believe he has "worked through" his problems, and they are encouraged to see that Neil Walker's dynamic, two-single, 1-ribbie production tonight was proof of same.
Hey, Tampa Bay was convinced. An intentional walk? To Walker? I'll retire to bedlam.
Count me in the prospect hugger camp.
ReplyDeleteI hate this trade.
This isjust the start of the stupidity and the ruining of the youth movement that showed perhaps we were learning about building a long term successful team and possibly another dynasty by having lots of potential starts in a very deep farm system the inevitable trade for Hamels or Haap or some similar 4.48 ERA midden of a pitcher I am going to hate even more.
Deep farm system depleted for rentals so short term in thinking so incredibly predictable what is going to happen
I dont want to hear it helps the impending 40 man rooster crunch patter either not when bums like Walker and Shreeve are stinking the place out there are 2 right away you can get rid of instead of young player who potentially be very good.
No doubt this move will be hailed as a masterstroke by Ninja Cashman by his cheerleaders and lcikspittles in the press and online forums and blogs.
Not this horse.
I think think think this trade is rank rotten.
To use a Scottish words if I may it is minging, bowfing and bogging
The scalping of the Daily News was indeed a terrible thing.
ReplyDeleteI used to read it everyday for much of the eighties. Besides some first-rate reporting on local news and a great sports page, they had pages and pages of comics!
And...one of the greatest editorial pages ever. Their own outlook was moderately conservative, but they had everyone from fascists to Maoists writing op-ed pieces, and great NYC columnists, such as Breslin, McAlary, and, I think, Hamill for awhile.
It had far and away the most readers of any American paper—maybe the most readers of any American paper, ever.
But then, TheWInWarblist notes, they were disemboweled to suit the purposes of the Tribune Company, which went around the country doing that to paper after paper, in order to serve their own, inane corporate strategy. They are now known as something like "Kronk," and barely in media at all.
This country is not going to last if its richest and most powerful citizens continue to use it simply as an object for plunder.
HORRENDOUS what was done to the Daily News!!!! I read it everyday, and it was noticeably thin and anemic today,,,,,,absolutely insane & beyond infuriating what is happening in this country!
ReplyDeleteIf they're lengthening the bullpen with Britton, that could mean they have slim hopes of improving the rotation.
ReplyDeleteBy the way, the murder of the Daily News is sad for sentimental comics fans. The Christopher Reeve Superman movies were shot there. And its founder, Joseph Medill Patterson, built a great comics section that he personally micromanaged.
ReplyDeleteWikipedia: "He took a hands-on approach to managing the various comic strip properties in his papers. He suggested the lead character of Gasoline Alley adopt a foundling child who became Skeezix, a central character in the strip. Patterson influenced Chester Gould's Dick Tracy, changing the title from Plainclothes Tracy, and he supported Gould's vision of a technical, grotesque and violent style of storytelling. Milton Caniff credited Patterson for suggesting a comic strip about the Orient, which led to the creation of Caniff's Terry and the Pirates."
I wish he still owned it.
Steve Roper and Mike Nomad.
ReplyDeleteDondi on the back page on Sunday.
ReplyDeleteDick Tracy on the front.
ReplyDeleteThe animated Dick Tracy was on a local channel for a kids show (that I would watch even though way too old -- just for the cartoons). It was a stop action cartoon, with a police squad-esque intro.
ReplyDeleteSix two and even. Over and out.
I hear Dondi and Little Orphan Annie married, and had kids with normal eyes.
ReplyDeleteRufus, that Tracy cartoon was nuts! He was barely ever in it, and for some reason they had rotating ethnic stereotypes to take his place. I wanted to see Dick Tracy, not the contents of the producers' poison hearts!
ReplyDeleteStill, I watched it religiously.
ReplyDeleteHey, NYC doesn’t need a local newspaper and the Yankees don’t need three young pitching prospects and nothing is real anymore and Sanchez is still a tub of shit and Boonie is still a moron and Binders is still at home, gnashing his teeth every day. Fuck the world and god bless Tanaka.
ReplyDeleteI LIKE THE BRITTON DEAL... A LOT.
ReplyDeleteCODY CARROLL MAY BE THE SLEEPER THERE, BUT I DON'T THINK DILLON TATE, OR JOSH RODGERS ARE FOR REAL. (ESPECIALLY RODGERS).
BRITTON STILL HAS PRIMO STUFF.
WATCHING HIM AGAINST US RECENTLY, HE WAS STILL THROWING 96 MPH, HE WAS SLIGHTLY WILD, BUT HIS BALL WAS DARTING AND MOVING LIKE IT WAS IN THE PAST.
BEAR IN MIND HE JUST CAME BACK OFF THE DL NOT LONG AGO WHICH I BELIEVE LED TO HIS SLIGHT WILDNESS.
WARREN
GREEN
D-RO
BETANCES
BRITTON
CHAPMAN
(KAHNLE GETTING BETTER RECENTLY IN AAA)
THAT'S PRETTY POWERFUL STUFF.
MAYBE COOPERSTOWN CASHMAN HAS ANOTHER SURPRISE UP HIS SLEEVE VIA A STARTER?
AS FAR AS THE DAILY NEWS GOES?
I OFFICIALLY STOPPED READING WHEN THE PAPER SHAMELESSLY INSULTED JOHNNY DAMON,("DUMB YANKEE") AND THEN LATER, PAUL O'NEIL ON IT'S BACK PAGES FOR MERELY REVEALING THEIR PERSONAL PRESIDENTIAL PREFERENCE. HOW DARE THEY?.... THAT WAS AS WRONG AS IT GETS.
EVERY SINGLE DAY, THEIR POLITICAL STANCE AND SLANT IS SO OBVIOUS THAT IT REEKS WITH OBVIOUS BIAS.
WHY DOES ANY NEWSPAPER (OR T.V.OUTLET) HAVE ANY POLITICAL STANCE AT ALL? THEY ARE SUPPOSED TO BE REPORTING US THE NEWS, AND ONLY THE NEWS.
GOOD RIDDANCE.
Going back to the start of the republic, papers have been openly biased. There was a “golden age of journalism” in the 20th century that tried to aim for more objectivity, but even that was flawed. It’s a shame that you can’t appreciate the News for its value as a New York cultural institution, rather than letting your own bias blacken you with hatred against the NYDN. I suppose you prefer Fox, that paradigm of propaganda masquerading as “news?”
ReplyDeleteTHE TRUTH THAT TRUMP IS A TRAITOR TO THIS COUNTRY HURTS, DOESN’T IT, ALLCAPS ASSHOLE?
ReplyDeleteThe Win Warblist LOVES MASA-HIROOOOO!! AAAHHHHHHHHHHHHH-HaHaaHAHAHAHAA-
ReplyDeleteAAAA-AA-Ahh-AHHH-AAAHHHHH-AAaAaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhHHHHHHHHaaaaAAHHHHHHHHHHHaaaa-ah-ah-ah-aaaaaaaaAaAaHaHaHaaaAAAAAAhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh !!!!!!!!!
The Professor... he still has a lot of baseball left in that elbow. right??? I would love to see us ride Sevy and The Prof to a title but we will need a third starter. Sonny? no way. It'll have to be C.C. for four or five innings followed by a gaggle of relievers.
ReplyDeleteHERE THEY COME OUT OF THE WOODWORK!
ReplyDeleteLOL.
THERE IS NOTHING ANYONE CAN SAY THAT MAKES INSULTING PEOPLE IN A NEWSPAPER, OR DISRUPTING PEOPLE IN PUBLIC, OR IN A RESTAURANT, RIGHT.
NO MATTER WHAT YOUR VIEW IS.
CASE CLOSED.
