Yanks hope to be first team ever to succeed with a 16-year-old millionaire pitcher

Actually, they're only spending $600,000 on Osiel Rodriguez, but you get the point.

They say he hits 95 mph on the gun, at age 16.

What about Tommy John surgery don't they understand?

Don't get me wrong: I'm happy to see Food Stamps Hal spend his money. Maybe this kid will be the exception. But it's a long way between tenth grade and MLB, and at the rate that young pitchers blow out their elbows, I won't hold my breath waiting. Let's hope there are some 16-year-old shortstops out there.

  1. Maybe the timing on this is bad but Severino was 16 when signed. Then again, so was every other pitcher they signed at 16 who flamed out and whose names we do not know.

  2. No worries. He'll be traded for another Gray or Voit!

  3. What's strange is that, even if he makes it, we shouldn't expect to see him before 2024. That would be during the [insert name that horrifies you] administration.

  4. Also, while I appreciate Coops trying to run up young bodies, how was it that we did NOT have enough International money already?

    Isn't this poor planning?

Traded Warren to the Mariners for $1.5 million in International free agent money

Those in the know claiming this is a salary dump and are concerned.

  8. I'd be shocked if he doesn't have Tommy John at some point within the next two years.

Tyler Austin for Lance Lynn... nobody is clamoring for Lance Lynn, not even his mother.

  9. As Cashman says "I alone can fix this."

  10. Hoss, there's a cap on how much you can spend on international signings, but you can trade international money. Even with that, there's still a maximum you're allowed to spend. Cashman has the Yanks maxed out at around 8.5 million with the last trades. Which is great if this is an exception year for talent down South. We'll know in 6 - 8 years how those trades worked out.

Hey, c'mon now Mustang, they also encourage promising young white boys to ... cut their hair.

  13. I love how you put a Brien Taylor card up there. LOL It couldn't get much worse than that. I hope that they check up on these kids personalities before signing them and won't toss good money on bad personalties. But at 16 you can change over night with half a million dollars.
