On this Gleyber Day Weekend, the spotlight will be on Cutch and Gary... and - wait - Adeniy Hechavarria?

Last night, Brett Gardner homered and went 2-4, raising his average to .240. (Over the last 30 days, he's hit .209.) Until last night, his puny offense didn't matter; the Yanks were going to play him anyway. Now, with Andrew McCutcheon, that could change, especially against lefties (which comprise three of the Redsock rotation.)

(By the way, the first half of John Sterling's HR call must be "CUTCH IS CLUTCH!" But what will be the finale?)

Last night, Kyle Higashioka sat the bench. On the season, he's hit .174. Until today, it didn't matter; he's our backup catcher, and we had nobody to replace him. Today, Hustlin' Gary Sanchez will make Higashioka an afterthought.

Last night, Aaron Judge and Didi Gregorius healed. Hopefully. Which brings us to the international man of mystery, Adeiny Hechavarria, received last night in a deal with Pittsburgh. Hechavarria is a 29-year-old Cuban-born shortstop, known primarily for his glove, who has a .255 lifetime batting average (but an on-base-percentage below .300, so he never walks.) The Yankees will pay the Pirates cash and a player to be named later. (The Pirates always seem to do well in trades with the Yankees, so we'll see.)

So who the fuk is Adeiny Hechavarria - what in God's name will be his HR call? - and what does it mean that we have spent Hal's hard-inherited money on a glove-first shortstop?

Well, 1) it signifies that the Yankees will take their good sweet time with Didi, which is smart. We are dead in the AL East race, but well positioned for the one-game wild card. These recent losses - however excruciating - haven't cost us much in the battle for that wretched one game season. If it takes Didi another week to heal, so be it. He bats third. He needs to be healthy.

It 2) suggests that the Yankees will move Gleyber Torres back to 2B, rather than play an infield with three men out of position. I can't argue with this, though Torres' position-switch did come with a hot streak at the plate, coincidence?

And 3) the Yankees have an interesting one-month rental. Hech will be a free agent this winter. He's not particularly fast - one SB this year - and without power - 4 HR. But in 76 games this year at SS, he's made only three errors. In 15 games at SS, Gleyber has made five. (In 84 games at 2B, he's made 11.)

If the wild card game were played today, the Oakland A's would probably start Trevor Cahill, a RH. Let's assume that Didi and Judge are back for that game. (An increasingly dangerous assumption for Judge, by the way.) Here could be the Yankee lineup.

Gardy or McCutcheon LF
Judge RF
Didi SS
Stanton DH
Hicks CF

Andujar 3B
Gleyber 2B
Sanchez or Romine c
Voit or Bird 1B

The Yankees now have competition in at least three places. And that lineup could be brutal.

The forecast isn't rainy for Adeiny! Hechavarria is a warri-ah!!

(For the second Saturday in a row, I'll go away now and quietly wait for the game to start.)

That's what you get when you fire everyone capable of writing a headline.

    1. Go home sir. You just won the internet today.

When you’re wondering why the police are at your door later inquiring about murder, it’s because your comment killed me.

  3. Adeiny Hechavarria HR call.

"Hey Ma, It's me Adeiny. Did you see me hit that HR today? Yeah, great. Could you put Dad on?"

  4. "Don't get tetchy, it's all the way with Hechy!"

    or

"The great Hetch Hetchy Project continues!"

You know—after the incredible reservoir and water system built in California in the 1920s?

    Huh? Huh?

Okay. LBJ, where you hangin' out?

  5. Wow a Hetch Hetchy joke. That's some seriously regional stuff right there.

I always thought this was more of an Erie Canal crowd.

At least you didn't do Anne Heche.

  6. Torres is not playing out of position at shortstop. That's his natural position. And he looks better there than Gregorius.

  7. More spectacular yes. Better? Not yet. Over time , probably.

  8. In the words of the Reverend Jesse Jackson, the point...is moot. Hech will never hit a home run, so no call is needed.

Shane Robinson DFA'd. That took waaayyyy too long. Good luck, kid.

Sanchez really did lay off the ice cream sandwiches. How about that?

  9. Doug K. -- how can you possibly know this? Have you seen comparative defensive breakdowns for both players at short? Probably not. Torres clearly has a better arm, better range, and softer hands.

  10. Adeiny's nickname is La Pantera....

    Maybe something with that?

  11. Doug K., the Anne Heche call is for when he hits multiple homers, to different fields:

"He goes left, he goes right! Hech goes more ways than ANNE Heche!"

Of course, he actually does that, I will happily kiss him. And Anne Heche. And Ellen Degeneres.

  12. So, Tanaka's leading, 2-1, in the 7th. First guy doubles, next one singles, then steals second.

No one even gets up, and we're told, "Low pitch count, this is his game to win or lose!"

Pitch count or no pitch count, if you've got 8 relievers on the team, why not use one, if your starter is losing it, regardless of why?

  13. All right, he got out of it very nicely, with The Cincinnati Kid even making some great blocks on the last batter.

    Props to Tanaka and Ma.

  14. OK--I've got the McCutcheon homerun call: McCutcheon . . . is touchin' 'em all!
