One year, $7,5 million... a pay cut.
But would he have made more on the market?
Gardy could turn out to be among the rarest of commodities: a one-team player and lifelong Yankee.
But does it mean Bryce Harper is out? Or is Jacoby Ellsbury gone? What about Clint Frazier? Estevan Florial? Ryan McBroom?
I trust Cashman has a secret plan mapped out on his bedroom wall.
I doubt if he could have got more elsewhere. And good luck to him.
ReplyDeleteBut make no mistake. This is the beginning of the end. Thrilled with their salary cap triumph this season, the Yanks are now going all dollars, all the time.
This team will finish a laggardly third next season, and continue on downhill from there.
"The lights are going out all over Yankee Stadium. They will not be lit again in our lifetime."
I was wrong and they are stupid!
ReplyDeleteDoug K.
The Gardy move is almost Boss-worthy. That loyalty thing he sometimes displayed, beyond reason in some cases.
ReplyDeleteWell, at least we know now.
Why doesn't Ells just retire? Not like he needs the money, and yet another comeback at his age would be painful. Unless he has Jeteritis and refuses to go out on an injury year.
Actually I've changed my mind. We have no back up for Hicks in center. Gardy covers that. So on one level it makes sense. So they aren't stupid just shortsighted. I still think there was a better choice.
ReplyDeleteDoug K.
John M,
ReplyDeleteIf he retires he loses close to $50 Million. That's a lot of money. It's not like he's playing so he's getting it to rehab. The Yankees could release him but they get the insurance $.
It's a win/win/ except for the 40 man roster issue because after the season everyone has to come off the DL so he clogs up that spot.
Doug K.
GARDY COMING BACK, OFF A DOWN YEAR, WILL TURN 36 DURING NEXT SEASON.
ReplyDeleteWTF ARE WE DOING?!
WHO'S NEXT?
CC AND NEIL WALKER?
HOW THE HELL ARE WE GOING TO BEAT A TEAM LIKE THE RED SOX BRINGING THESE GUYS BACK?
THIS IS EXACTLY WHAT MR. DUQUE WAS POINTING OUT THIS MORNING WITH HIS POST.
WE CAN'T FALL IN LOVE WITH "LEADERSHIP", "LOYALTY", AND "SENIORITY".
WE MUST REPLACE THOSE WORDS WITH THE WORD, "PRODUCTION".
THAT'S WHAT THE RED SOX HAVE DONE.
SEE YOU IN FUCKING 2020!
Dumb move. There's one spot a newcomer will not get a chance to play. Cashman has no plan. He thinks he's being clever, but he really plays from fear, trying to cover this scenario or that. I love Gardy, but this is a dumb move, even if he hits for average. He's done.
ReplyDeleteThis move is inexplicably stupid. A speed player on 36-year-old legs coming off an abysmal season. Sign him up! Really--it's not hyperbole or spite to assert that Cashman is deeply, irremediably stupid. He really seems to suffer from some grievous cognitive disorder.
ReplyDelete
ReplyDeleteStupid is the word that came to my mind as well.
Note (not that it really matters): They declined the $12.5 million team option in his contract, which meant the NYYs had to pay Gardy $2.5 million. According to an AP report that I saw, you have to ADD THAT to the $7.5 million.
So the cost of Gardy for 2019 is $9.5 million. They "saved" $3 million. Assuming this was not a brilliant move to beef up the Scranton roster, it is mystifying.
The guy had a 2018 OBP of .322. Struck out 16% of the time (going by plate appearances, not just ABs). That's an awful lot of Ks for a guy with 12 HRs.
Bryce Harper maybe doesn't want to play in the Bronx (a rumor floated in a Washington Post "analysis" of where he might end up that ran two days ago). And maybe Red Thunder will never be the same again.
I still don't understand how this leaves us with a .236 hitter who doesn't play SS. I checked his splits. Maybe, I thought, Cashmoney kept him b/c he bats left.
Nope. In 2018, Gardy hit .235 against RHP.
Oi vey.
I truly thought we'd seen the last of Bret "the Hit Man" Gardner. color me shocked, saddened, and a little bored. Not the Hot Stove I was hoping for.
ReplyDeletenow I foresee pretty much the same team in 2019, as I suspect most of our free agents will be resigned. Maybe one new starter. I mean opener...
P.S. I have a lot of affection for Gardner. He always plays hard and to the best of his ability. A true pro but one who never quite connected with "modern" fans. I don't think the Yankees even sell his jersey. al least, I've never noticed a fan wearing one.
ReplyDeleteIt is 100% a reaction to last season when they were using " lifers" from Scranton to play key games, due to lack of depth. Only now, our "lifer" will have a better resume. He won't help much. He won't foretell a positive future.
ReplyDeleteHe is just older and can't hit or run so well anymore.
Worth millions, of course.
But I'll take two of him to Jacoby and Mount Sinai
And four him him to Mike Pence, or whomever it was we had playing in the outfield for a while this past season.
P.S. None of it matters.
We will be fighting for the same opportunity as last season. And checking out early.
