Paging Giancarlo Stanton, Paging Mr. Giancarlo Stanton...

From the Times account of last night's NLCS opener:

"Kershaw's command was not sharp, and the Brewers' hitters did not bite on balls outside the strike zone."

Wow, what a crazy strategy!

Meanwhile, Cooperstown's press conference seems to have been a virtual cascade of meaningless cliches:

On Didi:

"How do we react to this situation?  We either stay with what we got or we can pursue something stronger."

I see.  So the option of, "just leave the shortstop position open" is out.  Good to know.

What went wrong against the Red Sox?

"...three of our starters had their hat handed to them, and our hitters went south."

Boy, you don't get analysis like that just anywhere!

As with many people who talk a lot to try to cover up what they're really saying, you have to read between the lines with Cashman.  The one note  I found most ominous was this one:

"As far as going over the [payroll] threshold, that's a bridge I'll cross when I come to it."

Uh-oh.

  1. He also said, (From the NY Post) " Look, my family has always been willing to take money that comes off the payroll and put it back in,” Steinbrenner said Friday on “The Michael Kay Show” on ESPN 98.7 FM. “We’re going to do our best to field a championship-caliber team every single year. This coming year is going to be no different than last.”

Which, if you parse it, might be even more frightening.

" Look, my family has always been willing to take money that comes off the payroll and put it back in,”

So no increase? The last few years have been about cutting payroll and the Luxury Tax reset. They have it now. So we should go for it. So do they? Let's ask Hal...

“We’re going to do our best to field a championship-caliber team every single year. This coming year is going to be no different than last.”

Championship CALIBER team. = make the playoffs = wild card. Compare and contrast with his Dad's anything less than a World Series victory is a failure. Oh, and last year we crapped out (By our standards).

Once again the Yankees will opt for a competitive product and pop the corks at the 3 millionth customer.

  2. Those are very frightening quotes indeed. Even within the quotes themselves.

"My family has been willing" means we are a team being run not by a leader but rather by a committee ... of wealthy Steinbrenner heirs.

    Ugh.

  3. I know it sucks. But at least it's not friggin' CBS and goldang Mike Burke. I have a really strong, detailed memory of 1965. And 1966. And the real Horace Clarke. And Ron Bloomberg. And 1972.

    Etc.

  4. I knew a doctor once, a beautiful intelligent woman from South East Asia, but unfortunately her name did translate well into the USA.

Paging Doctor Kock, Boon Kock, paging Doctor Boon Kock.

  5. I'M STARTING TO HATE THAT "CHAMPIONSHIP CALIBER TEAM" CRAP.

I WANNA HEAR HAL SAY, "I WOULD LIKE TO THANK ALL THE FANS WHO STOOD BEHIND THIS TEAM THE ENTIRE WAY. FOR THEM, I PLEDGE TO DO WHATEVER IS NECESSARY TO BE THE LAST TEAM STANDING NEXT SEASON."

    BIG DIFFERENCE IN SEMANTICS.

  7. I rarely come here, rarely read the drivel included. Sorry I did today. Maybe Yankee fans are an entitled bunch, as other team's fans regularly say. Kinda sad, in a sick kind of way. For me, I'll remain a Yankee fan, just as I did thru the CBS years. The Yankees lost this season due to injuries, and the Boston Red Sox having a terrific season. All the whining, crying, and hyperbole will not change that. Hold onto Hechhavarria, resign CC and Happ, sign FA's Patrick Corbin and Bryce Harper, move on, winning the 2019 World Series.
