A Bad Throw, following a bad play

I made the mistake of watching what was yesterday called, " a rare 4 o'clock start."

The yankees were battling the prospective AL champion Tigers.

In left field, finally, was Clint Frazier.  He is no longer " Red Thunder," nor does he have flowing locks.  Nor does he bring thunder.

He is now just, well, a lousy outfielder.

On two successive plays, he looked like a high school kid trying too hard.  As though he was attempting to impress a young lady who had come to the game with friends ( for the sushi).

On one play, he failed to cut-off a hit to left center that was clearly reachable.  It turned a single into a stand-up double.

The piece de la resistance, however, came with a Tiger on third and one out.  A lazy fly ball to short left field caused Frazier to jog about 20 yards toward the infield  ( if we had a shortstop who could run, he would likely have called for it ).

There was never a chance that the guy on third would tag and try to score.  Most of our grandmothers could make that throw on a fly to to the catcher.

Clint wound himself up like a dervish and unleashed as hard a throw as he had in him.  One expected to hear a " thump" in the catcher's glove, as this bullet came on the fly direct to the target.  This was to be a signature message to the league, that this dude has an arm.

Instead, the ball wound up closer to first base, and bounced off the stadium side walls, missing all the cut-off guys and back-ups.  The runner was so shocked, he remained frozen at third. I think a Yankee finally picked up the still-spinning sphere somewhere near the mound.

 Clint did not get an error.

I have to say this;  he looked like a player I do not want in my outfield.  He has the appearance of  a guy who will bungle anything that gets near him.

He is like a throw-in on a trade that the other team is laughing about.

And he was a player for whom we once had high hopes.

 Sometimes the dream is far better than the reality.
