Next man up? How about Nestor Cortes, who last night nearly threw a no-hitter in Syracuse

Late last night, a friend wrote:

Just getting in from NBT Band Stadium, Mets (Chiefs!) vs Railriders.

Watched Scranton pitcher, 24-year-old Nestor Cortes Jr take a no-hitter into the bottom of the 8th, before a clean single on his 100th pitch ended it. I’ve never witnesses a no-hitter in person, and really thought this was gonna be the night. Oh well!

Scranton’s 2 - 0 lead disappeared in the bottom of the 9th, courtesy of a 2-run Mets HR. But the Railriders came back and won it in the bottom of the 10th, 4 - 2.

One last note; when Railriders’ skipper Jay Bell took Cortes out (after losing the no-hitter), the entire Syracuse crowd stood and gave the visiting pitcher a standing ovation. Classy!

Me? Last night, I watched TV and worked on my Joey D and the Starlighters scrapbook. When you're as busy as I am... priorities.

But about Nestor Cortes Jr... here's the Bill Barr redacted thumbnail:

He's a Cuban-born, Florida-raised, 5'11" lefty junk-baller who the Orioles tried to steal from us in the 2017 Rule 5 draft, after he recorded the lowest ERA in all of minor league baseball among pitchers with more than 100 innings. The Showalter machine saw something, and Cortes lasted with the mother ship until two weeks into April. He made four appearances, was pounded, and Baltimore sent him home.

Sometimes with Rule 5 draftees, the team that lost the draftee works out a deal to let the kid stay with his newly adopted franchise. In this case - (as with Ivan Nova, who many years earlier was drafted by San Diego) - the Yankees ignored any of Buck's charm offensive trade overtures and took Cortes back.

Cortes threw 111 innings last year for Scranton, with a meh ERA of 3.71. Before last night, he wasn't exactly performing like Bitcoin. By throwing 7.1 shutout innings, Cortes lowered his ERA to - gulp - 4.54. He has 34 strikeouts in 33 innings - 11 walks - and pitches to contact.

If the Yankees make the call on Cortes, they must ditch somebody from the 40-man roster. At first glace - Cameron Maybin in RF - that looks easy. It's a false read. Once everyone starts healing, the roster will tighten. They'll probably see if he's got another dominating start in him before subjecting him to The Show.

But one more start like last night, and I'd be speaking for the Yankiverse in saying: What are we waiting for?

  1. Nestor's "fastball" clocks in at about 86 mph. He has a vast array of junk that gets undisciplined minor league hitters out with ease, but major leaguers lay off, get him into fastball counts then clobber him. He's fun, but without a better heater it's always just a matter of time until a major league lineup starts teeing off on him.

  2. NO, NO, NO MR. DUQUE....

"NASTY NESTOR" IN OUR HOMER HAPPY STADIUM?

THAT'S A MATCH MADE IN HELL.

    PUBLIUS IS DEAD ON.

LEAVE NESTOR IN SCRANTON WHERE HE BELONGS.

    WHAT HAPPENED TO LASAGNA?

I DON'T REMEMBER HIM DOING BAD AT ALL THIS SEASON, YET HE GOT SHIPPED OUT.

    IS HE HURT?

I DON'T CARE IF HE GOT HIT IN RELIEF DOWN IN SCRANTON, THAT KID HAS GOOD STUFF, BRING HIM BACK AND START HIM.

  3. And/or give Chance Adams a, well, chance. A second chance, that is.

  4. I thought Lasagna was supposed to get a real shot this year, and as a starter, not a pen pawn. Guess not.

There will never be a Nestor other than Nestor Chylak. All other Nestors are cursed and will never make it in the bigs.

Do not mess with the God of Nestor. He's generally benign, but on this one issue he's a hellion.

  5. @JM...in the history of baseball, no team has ever won a World Series with someone named Nestor on their roster. You can look it up.

  6. I'd also like to respectfully point out that just two anagrams for "Nestor Cortes" are

    1. Erect Sons Rot
    2. Escort Stoner

There are others, but I don't want to lay too much on you all at once.

  7. Does this mean we finally won the Pineda trade?

  8. Speaking of Nestor Chylak, refusing to end this game has to set a record for all-time umpire stupidity this evening—and it's a choice that threatens to seriously screw over the Yankees.

Mike Winters, the—and I use this word advisedly—dipshit home plate ump and crew chief, SHOULD have called the game after the top of the 8th, with the Yanks up three runs.

But no, he has insisted on continuing, despite monsoon climatic conditions. I kid, of course. Monsoons generally take place in warm climates, while the temperature in NYC feels as though it's dropping toward freezing.

Much worse, of course, is the fact that the delay has already gone on so long that the Yanks have probably burned Chapman, who came on to get the last out in the 8th. This puts us at a serious disadvantage—and not to mention the fact that it means all of the fans will have left, and the players will risk any number of injuries on the thoroughly soaked field.

This is so weird and foolish that it must have to do with some MLB directive...

  9. And there it is, at last: game called, after 8 innings. And after a mere 1 hour, 1 minute delay during a cold, pelting rain, and with hours of further rain in the forecast.

Hurrah, Mr. Winters. Attention has been paid.
