The Master will sit

Last time he missed a game, Don Mattingly was our first-baseman.

  1. Wow. This is big news.

Ruocco seems like a nice enough guy, but he's pretty dull and his voice is only middling. I hope they're not grooming him as the Master's replacement.

  2. WE NEED TO WIN TWO FOR THE MASTER.

  3. Deion Sanders and Ricky Henderson played OF in that game!

From an interview two years ago:

"Having witnessed every Yankees inning since Steve Sax and Alvaro Espinoza were the double-play combination, Sterling said that he is pleased that the timber in his voice has remained true."

Steve Sax and Alvaro Espinoza. That was a very dark period in Yankee history.

  4. I listened to some of the London series--hearing the Iron Man for the first time in a while--and his voice sounded a little thin and weak. I was afraid it might be age catching up to him at last, but this development gives me hope that it's something he can get over.

  5. Michael Kay must have given him whatever disease he had last week. It appears to be curable, since the big head survived.

  6. This is heart breaking. I was literally upset when I first read about John’s streak ending. He’s been the Yankees guy since I was 9. And since you guys were like, uh, 50-ish.

  7. I'll always be "50-ish".

    The Master is "eternal".

  8. The Master is the world's best baseball radiocaster if you think "two on, two out" is a great radio description. Really? Is that first and second? First and third? Second and third? Or if you think STRIKE THREE! is a great call. Swinging? Called? Or if you don't really want to know what kind of pitch has been thrown most of the time. Or if you don't want to hear what the count is after a thrown pitch half the time. Or if you just tune in and don't really want to hear the score for about ten minutes. Or if you think not just one, but two or three hokey "signature" calls per home run is the summit of good taste. Or if you think that his off-handed, mumbled calls interspersed into one of his interminable anecdotes doesn't indicate that he thinks that his patter is more important than the game. Or if you think that the inane, endlessly flogged observation that you can't predict the result of every pitch or at-bat is analytical genius. Or if you think that THUH-UH-UH-UH-UH-UH YANKEES WIIIIIINNNNN! is more about the game than the self-promotion of the broadcaster. Or if you think his lifetime tenure at the Yankees radio mic is a testament to his broadcasting skills rather than his assiduous smooching of George's giant behind. And so on. . . . Now: during this Mets series, turn on WCBS and give a listen to Howie Rose. He is a consummate play-by-play craftsman. Let's be honest and drop all the maudlin groupwink.

  9. Wow, anon, why don't you tell us what you REALLY think of John's sportscasting?? Many from this blog like to watch the game on YES, but turn down the sound & listen to John & Suzyn...perhaps those folks don't need every little detail. Sadly, I don't have that option; if I want to listen the J & S, I have to sit in my car, and tune in XM satellite radio - - and if I want to watch the game, I have to tune in DirecTV, and use my MLB Extra Innings Sub.

Personally, if I had my 'druthers, Jon Miller would be my current choice - - but he's waaaay out there on the left coast. LB (No J)

  10. Frankly, I still miss the hearty baritone of Bill White.

  11. Someone once said how legendary Mets announcer Bob Murphy painted the word picture. Sterling uses crayons.

  12. Bill White was the best. Not a bad player in his day either.
