Our losses all look the same: Starting pitchers get blown out

Yesterday, the Death Star trolleyed out CC Sabathia, Nestor Octavio-Cortes Jr., and Luis Cessa. In other words, the game was never in doubt. Seriously, was anybody surprised?

Listen: CC is a grand old man, a tribal elder, a great Yankee... forhesajollygoodfellow, forhesajollygoodfellow, forhesajollygoodfellowwwwww, whichnobodycandeny... but did that have to mean no minor league rehab game? Did we have to parachute him into a set against Cleveland, the team of his past, on a day after he was bounced for pissing on the umps? Couldn't he have pitched a game in Scranton, or Trenton, or anywhere within a drive? Afterwards, CC told the assembled Gammonites that he was pitching with the pain level estimated at 8 out of 10. W.T.F? Eight out of 10? That may be gritty and courageous. It's also sort of stupid and a surefire loss.

Wanna beat the 2019 so-called "Savages?" (By the way, I hate that nickname. The Yankees can promote it to hell and back; it's neither catchy nor lovable, and it ignores the team's cerebral approach to hitting this year. It's the worst self-attributed moniker in years, and if we fail to win the World Series, we're going to hear it derisively from caustic Boston fans for the rest of our lives. Big mistake, self-naming with such a stupid line.) Beating the Yankees is simple: Just score a few runs early and put the game on Cruise Control, while the stressed out Yankee batters flail at bad pitches. The last five Yankee losses - which extend into July - show the same simple formula: Our starter gets bombed, we bring in the B-unit, and the game is never in doubt.

Yesterday: CC is awful. Cleveland rolls up 4 in the second, we bring in Cortes and Cessa - (a worse omen than the Mothman) - and the Indians coast.

Thursday: Chad Green gives up 5 in one-third of an inning, then it's the absolutely horrible Jonathan Loaisiga - (is this guy really the prospect they keep touting him as? Because he wasn't pitching well in Scranton, either.) From there, the 19-run rout is on...

Aug 10: Stephan Tarpley and Chance Adams give up 3 in the fourth. We never catch up.

Aug 9: JA Happ gives up six in five innings.

July 30: Happ again: Three runs in five. That's all it takes.

Wanna win? All we need is a decent start. With an early lead, we own them. Trouble is, every fan in YES channel captivity knows where this season is heading: To that buzz saw in Houston, which has at least two starters - Cole and Verlander, (both of whom should be Yankees) - capable of shutting us down for seven or eight innings. Come October, if James Paxton gives up two in the first, or Happ can't survive the fifth, all the good vibes of 2019 could vanish quickly.

Which brings us to the one Yankee on the fulcrum: Luis Severino. I gotta believe he comes back as the bullpen game starter, slowly stretching himself into two and three-inning gigs. Not only does he have to return in good health, but Sevy has to return as the guy from early 2018, not the one who fell apart last fall. If by Oct. 1, Severino is a four or five inning starter, that he the missing link - the guy who gets us within an inning of Ottavino-Kahnle-Britton-El Chapo... with the possibility of Chad Green and even Dellin Betances to supplement the corps.

As for CC? Love the guy. Wish we could turn back the clock. But seriously... his next outing should be in Scranton.

  1. EXACTLY , TOTALLY AGREE,,, WHEN CORTES, OR CESSA COME IN, WE KNOW BOONE HAS THROWN IN THE TOWEL, TIME TO CHANGE CHANNELS.. AND THE TEAM KNOWS IT, AND QUITS,,,

FOUR RUNS AREN'T MUCH TO GET BACK WITH OUR TEAM, YET BOONE JUST THROWS IN ADAMS OR SOME IDIOT THAT WAS PICKED UP FOR ONE GAME AND DESIGNATED FOR ASSIGNMENT..

I MEAN THIS IS THE YANKEES, DOESN'T CASHMAN KNOW WHAT HE IS DOING , BUYING THESE NOBODY PITCHERS, AND BRINGING THEM UP FOR ONE GAMME..

SOMETIMES CASH CAN BE SO STUPID, AND BOONE SO OBVIOUS WHEN HE THROWS IN THE SINGLE A PITCHERS, TO HELP GENERATE THE BATTING AVERAGES OF THE OPPOSING TEAM

  2. C C is the mop up guy. I never want to see him unless the yanks are down 8 runs. Had cortes and cessa started the game, at least they'd keep it close.

If C C wants to start, he should prove it in AAA.

Once the rosters expand C C can be on the team for ceremonial purposes.

Sorry but no one is bigger than the team. He can't keep going out and spotting the other team big leads.

If the yanks are playing a young, free swinging team, CC might be able to get by. Against teams that make him throw his 85mph stuff over the plate, he's toast

    ReplyDelete
  3. Isn't it obvious? Huh? Start of the year CC was a 5 inning pitcher. Then he became a 4 inning pitcher. Now, he's a no inning pitcher. I love the guy too, but it's time to say thanks for your service and put him on the 60 day EL. He's not going to be on the post season roster and he's not going to help the Yanks the rest of the season. We all feel bad about it.

    ReplyDelete
  4. I completely agree. CC may be the grand old man on the bench (and every great team needs one), but starting him against a contending team without a rehab start in the bushes, that's asking for bad things to happen both to the pitcher and his team.

Another bad sign of the apocalypse was identified by the Unknown poster above. "WE KNOW BOONE HAS THROWN IN THE TOWEL, TIME TO CHANGE CHANNELS.. AND THE TEAM KNOWS IT, AND QUITS,,,"

"The team knows it and quits." <-- that's what championship-class teams don't do.

Champion teams don't quit. They laugh at their predicament and then go to work. They stare disaster down without getting 'loser face'. They pick each other up. They won't give up until their last chance is actually exhausted.

If a team with as many bats as the Yankees have, quits on a game because the pitchers are getting hit, then the season is already lost. You can add all the superstars in the world to the roster, the outcome would be the same. Champions never quit, even they have nothing left but their tenacity, their determination and the confidence that their future is still in their hands.

Someone needs to send Bernie Williams into the dugout for a team chat. Now there's a guy who never quit, even when he was old and his body was broken. That's a champion and a true standard of excellence.

  5. I love CC, the heart and soul of the last championship Yankees. I only regret I do not have one of the AJ✓CC t-shirts from 2009.

    Fuck you Hal.

  6. "I love CC, but ©"

His next start ought to be at the Old-timers Game next year.

We should send him on a farewell tour, but not with the team.

We should adapt Mike Fan Cessa's idea and make CC the pitching coach and let Larry Rothschild tour Thailand by pedicab.

We should just give him to Cleveland for the last month of the season so he can really say goodbye, especially to the midges.

We let The Master manage one game, put Boone in the massage room and let CC do the announcing. Give him a huge can of pretzel nuggets and tell him to chew into the microphone the whole time.

The headline for this post could also be "Starting Pitchers Blow." Economy of words, double entendre, strong declarative sentence. "Blow," get it? okay, back to work.

    ReplyDelete
  7. Jordan Montgomery should start a minor league rehab assignment in about a week barring any setback. He has thrown 2 short simulated games (2-3 innings) recently. He should be a good fresh arm for the post season and a lefty to take CC's playoff roster spot.

    ReplyDelete
  8. Ok. I’ll be the one to say I DON’T LOVE CC!! It’s all because how he abandoned us in the post season when he decided to seek treatment for alcoholism. He never gave an adequate explanation. Just sort of “you gotta do what you gotta do”. Somehow, the perfect time to go into rehab is the exact time the Yanks reached the post season? Really? I don’t buy it for a second.

I suspect he fucked up so royally that the Yanks forced him into rehab, or else he was off the team. Then the Yanks, being the flowers of humanity we all know they are, gave him this stupid story to feed the fans, who lapped it up, of course. Of course we’ll never know but that may have cost us a ring.

You people really bought that line of horse shit?

  9. "CC told the assembled Gammonites that he was pitching with the pain level estimated at 8 out of 10. "

Reading between the lines... CC demonstrates heart and commitment BUT the body is no longer willing or able. Sadly he will have to go back on the EL as he goes out not with a bang (Unless you count the sound of the ball hitting the bat and going 400 feet)but a whimper.

He will stop pitching very soon. Not because he sucks, (That's just a byproduct), not because he's hurting the team, (but he is the type of teammate who has to know this) but because he's bone on bone and it hurts just to stand.

This one is going to solve itself right after the five hour flight to Oakland when CC can't get out of his seat. I kid you not.

  10. KD,

Interesting take. I never considered it but I can see the truth in it. The timing was odd to say the least. Either way it screwed the team and he pretty much got a pass.

    Doug K.

    ReplyDelete
  11. But KD, if he went out there trashed or with a hangover, that could have cost us as well. I'm much more down on David Wells for that game where we REALLY needed him and he developed some neck spasm/tweaked gonad, like, ten minutes before the first pitch.

Anyway, I'm trying to be filled with love these days. I love everybody. Everybody. Every. Last. Mofo.

    ReplyDelete
  12. The Master yesterday suggested turning CC into a lefty-specialist. Just for 1 strikeout in the 6th or 7th inning. Seems like he might have enough left in the tank for that.
Since we all think the Master must manage a game, we have to start accepting his ideas.

    ReplyDelete
  13. CC with a hangover had to be at least as good as Doc Ellis on acid. Or, at least, it would seem logical.

Mantle, Martin, Maris, Skowron...they all put in some really good showings with hangovers, if I recall. Mantle did, anyway.

Whatever. All water under the knee now.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Urban Farmer, I like the one-batter specialist—sort of like Cone coming in to get Piazza for that one, key out in the 2000 World Series. But I doubt if CC is even capable of that.

KD, I lean more to your side in all this. Yes, CC was crucial in 2009, and gave us some good years after that. And yes, I guess whenever you "have" to do alcohol rehab, you do it.

But for the most part, for the last 7 seasons now, he has been an obstruction, helping Coops and HAL avoid spending bucks on getting a real starting rotation, while soaking up plenty of said bucks himself.

Part of an athlete's responsibility—especially when he is making $23 million a year—is making himself fit to take the field (yes, looking at you, Giancarlo). CC never bothered to do that.

And KD, for the record, I will NEVER forgive David Wells for blowing the 2003 Series like that...and then, walking off the team in a snit because the Yanks dared to suggest he start some sort of exercise program before they gave him a fat new contract.

    ReplyDelete
  15. I would agree that Sevvy is our only hope. Although—I also read of a Mike King sighting the other day. Apparently, he's back pitching in Scranton. His performance has been uneven so far, but...

    ReplyDelete
  16. Oh, and Mediuasavvy? I don't think this team quits. I think it has plenty of heart, plenty of fight in it...even though, to my shame, I said much the opposite after the Beatdown in Beantown.

Just the way they bounced back to win the last game in that series—and promptly went on a new tear—showed that.

The trouble here is much the same as it was in 2004, with another Yankees team that set some sort of record for comebacks.

After awhile, no matter how much heart you have, bad pitching catches up to you. When you're always playing from behind, the other team's pitchers can throw differently, they can take more risks—and force you to take fewer risks. They will be more apt to pump a ball down the middle when you're not expecting it, etc.

In other words, their possible zone of activity expands, while yours shrinks.

I think this Yankees team has the heart of champions. It just doesn't have the starting pitching of champions.

"UNKNOWN"...I WILL NOT PRESS CHARGES AS THIS IS PROBABLY JUST A FRIENDLY "MISSTEP".

I WILL CHALK IT UP TO WHAT I REFER TO AS "YANKEE RAGE".

    BACK TO BUSINESS.....

I HOPE COOP AND BOONIE REALIZE THAT COME PLAYOFF TIME, THERE CAN BE NO CC...NO NASTY NESTOR...NO CESSA...NO TARPLEY...NO CHANCE ADAMS...NO HOLDER....I CAN LIVE WITH DAVID HALE (IF HEALTHY), AS A MOP UP MAN IN THE PLAYOFFS IF WE MUST KEEP SOMEONE FOR THAT.

YOU NEVER KNOW WITH THIS BULLSHIT METRICS DEPARTMENT WE HAVE,

THEY MAY HAVE A STAT THAT SAYS CHANCE ADAMS DOESN'T GIVE UP AS MANY HITS ON A TUESDAY IN ABOVE 65 DEGREE TEMPS, ON A GRASS TURF, WITH THE WINDS BLOWING NORTHEAST.

    I'M WORRIED ABOUT CLEVELAND.

    I'M WORRIED ABOUT HOUSTON.

I'M EVEN WORRIED ABOUT THE TWINS.

I THINK IT'S CRAZY TO INCITE OUR ENEMIES WITH THIS "SAVAGE" SHIT- NOT TO MENTION THE UMPIRES WHO NOW ARE ALL AGAINST US.

IT IS ALL LINING UP AGAINST US.

WE ARE GOOD, BUT AGAINST THE "PLAYOFF CALIBER" TEAMS, WE CAN'T BE GETTING DOWN BY 3 RUNS OR MORE RIGHT AWAY. (THINK PAXTON WITH HIS FIRST INNING BULLSHIT).

WE ARE SETTING OURSELVES UP FOR A CRUSHING EXIT.

NOW WITH THESE "SAVAGES" SHIRTS OUR PLAYERS WERE ALL WEARING ON THE PLANE LAST NIGHT?

THIS IS BABY SHIT THE METS ALWAYS DO, AND I CALL THEM OUT ON IT, AND IT ALWAYS COMES BACK TO HAUNT THEM.

KINDA LIKE WHEN JUDGE PLAYED THE "NEW YORK, NEW YORK" SONG IN BOSTON LAST YEAR.

WE SAW HOW WELL THAT WENT.

    WE ARE DOING EVERYTHING WRONG.

    I PRAY I'M WRONG.

PLEASE LORD, MAKE ME BE WRONG.

  19. Maybe the time has come to, you know, hang loose. Relax. Stop worrying and see this pastime for what it is. Or has become.

The only people that mind about winning are you. Fans. Deplorables.
The players don't really care, with the exceptions of course. But basically every player shod get a $100.000 fine if he hasn't reach halfway to second (minimum) on a fly ball to the warning track.

The club certainly doesn't care. You discussed that endlessly. HAL doesn't give a fuck. Too cheap to buy Keuchel and Corbin.
The Yankees is a money making machine and we all know it. Time to accept that and move on. Look at the game as it is intended by the people above us. The elite.
    Baseball equals homoerotic ballet

Marvel at the sanguinity Judge shows when he gets called out on strikes even when the ball is below the knees. He quiet demeanor, his laiser-faire.

Look at that swing on Scary Sanchez. The way the bottom half of his body gives strength to his whiffs. An exercise in rhythm and style, albeit aimless. Bit that is the essence of art
    Art for arts sake

Look at the improvisation of Gardy, the roof-hunper. The way he gives new meaning to the word bat. When he gets up to hit he doesn't pick up his bat. He is beyond that. He picks up his poker.

CC. We love him. The ultimate stage appearances of a withered great actor. The beauty of decline. The orgasm of decay.

Red Thunder, the cameo. The dancer without red shoes. The boyman auditioning untill he breaks his head, never to recover. A martyr created by Coops himself.

A double play is not a out the out, it is about the manly dance of to young and able man, daring to offer each other the gift of their ball.

    God I am horny

  20. OK Ladies and Germs,

Just purchased tickets for the Sept. 6 game in enemy territory, at Phen Weigh Pahk.

Please note that I have been to at least a dozen Yankees/Carmines games and have yet to see the Yankees lose to those scum. Wish me luck, or Juju, whichever god you may worship. I will be attending with two friends from the posh projects of Westchester County (gimme a haughty snif, snif!). One or both of them will attend next year's meetup, provided they are still on this side of the grass.

On another note, what happened to the photo at the end of the epic game in the Bronx with the huckleberries holding the "FOOD STAMPS HAL" placards? Drunk and inquiring minds need to know.

  25. ALL-CAPS, I gotta disagree with you on this. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.

Look at that "thumbs down" thing the team did in 2017: it seemed to really work.

Look at the Carmine Hose with their "Cowboy Up" (failed) and "The Idiots" (succeeded).

I think as long as it comes out of something organic, it's good. But it won't make our staff even worse, and dropping it won't make our staff better. Savages we is, and savages we shall remain!

    ReplyDelete
  26. Oh, and ALL-CAPS? Speaking of the Mets, you're going to enjoy the next month.

Their next 25 games are all against contenders for a wild card or division leaders. Heh-heh-heh.

When was the last time anyone saw a hit and run?

  29. The Mets - lambs to the slaughter. The sacrificial humans that the Aztecs would treat like family, then kill, except in this case, the still-beating heart that they tear out of the chest after slicing it open with an obsidian knife...that heart belongs to the Borough of Queens. The poor fuckers. They never knew what hit them. Those poor Dodger and Giants fans - my dad was a lifeline Giants fan, but luckily, he married my mom, who grew up a block from Yankee Stadium, so he was able to change sides with no apologies. Those poor fuckers thought that another NL team was coming to town, but what they got was very different.

  30. Let’s drop the next three to the A’s, just to stick it to the Sox and be ready for the Dodgers. Who’s in?

  31. If they start CC, then Boone is in. Can we start Holder?

    ReplyDelete
  32. I was raised on showing good sportsmanship and not flaunting it in front of the other team and all that. I never cared for the "pie-to-the-face" Swisher stuff. Heck, I hated these things starting way back to the A's Bash Brothers where they arm bashed seemingly after every at bat. Of course I also believe baseball shouldn't let their guys look like cavemen hipsters with their terrible beards neither.

All ideals are going away as I get older and older. But then again, imagine men all wearing the same exact suit and hat to the stadiums, like how you see the stadium photos of Babe Ruth's time. That is simply insane to my modern eyes.

Every era has their own preferences. So let the Yanks call themselves "beasts" and let "Bam Bam" Meulens, I mean "Bam Bam" Gardner, do his cavemen thing. The truth of it all is that you're getting just too old when these little things start to tick you off. Let them have their little fun.
