Make of this what you will

  1. That has Randy Levine's fingerprints all over it.

Mo's finest moment would be if he publicly told Trump to shove the medal up his ass. Bu tof course, he would never do that. What a shame.

  2. Apparently they have been friendly for years. Strange bedfellows. Mo talked about learning English in the minors.

I lost all respect for Rivera and with Paul O'Neill when they both doubled-down on their admiration of Trump.

  4. It's the Presidential Medal of Freedom! It's a great honor no matter who it comes from. It is one's imperative duty to respect it and leave all politics out of it, even if only for a moment. It is about unity and respect and honor.

On the other hand, Fuck Trump. Throw the fucking medal in the garbage.

  5. Apparently Mariano Rivera and Paul O"Neil are smarter than you guys.

  6. Trump probably thinks Mariano is from Puerto Rico and he's trying to show he's the least racist person in the world.

  7. At least Trump didn't ask Mariano if he knew any Austrian.

  8. TRUMP IS MAKING THE YANKEES GREAT AGAIN!

  9. I think Mariano's story is a super example of a man immigrating here and living his dream. He seems like a genuinely good human being; in 20-some years of hearing him speak he has never seemed anything less than that.

If he and Trump have been friends for years (or if they haven't) I respect the man's right to receive an award from the president of this country, whoever that president might be and regardless of my political feelings for or against that president.

Personally (though no one asked) I lose some respect for anyone who loses all respect for a man simply because that man dares to disagree with him. Representative republics are BASED on disagreement, and the U.S. be that.

Mariano is a class act and has an inspiring life story. Any honor this country can give him is cool with me.

  10. Mike...personally, I lose all respect for a person who is a sociopathic liar and calls everyone south of our border rapists, murderers and criminals.

  11. By the way, here is the criteria for receiving the Presidential Medal of Freedom:

The Presidential Medal of Freedom is awarded by the president of the United States "for especially meritorious contribution to (1) the security or national interests of the United States, or (2) world peace, or (3) cultural or other significant public or private endeavors".

Like most athletes, Mo is 0-3. Throwing a great cutter doesn't count. Neither does shooting the 3-pointer prodigiously. Before Trump leaves office (will he leave?), I'm sure he will find a way to sell them to wealthy clients. Maybe he will bestow one on Trump University.

  12. The medal seems to have evolved into the equivalent of various British knighthoods: they're given out for being outstanding in whatever.

That is all I will say on the matter, in the interest of keeping this site politics-free.

  13. The idea the Koch Industries is a Yankee sponsor should speak volumes...btw they also sponsor the Red Sox.

  15. I think a case could be made that Rivera has shown especially meritorious service in cultural or other significant public or private endeavors. My point was that he was a good man; perhaps that isn't worthy of recognition. If you feel that way, I'm inclined to agree with you.

It's interesting that as soon as Trump got involved the prevailing opinion of Mo seemed to change from Yankees great to undeserving political pawn. Mo said almost the same stuff in Cooperstown and there was no backlash. Maybe that's because MLB and the HOF are such cleanly run organizations. I wouldn't know. I do know this place during this post seems to have become one-sided politically, which honestly seems strange to me. But I'm a guy who dislikes all sides of politics so maybe I'm missing some nuances here.

    Anyway, back on track: FYH!!!!!
