The "Next Man Up" phenomenon has not applied to the bullpen

Vast Gammonitic rain forests of words have sprouted over the 2019 Yankees "Next Man Up" movement... and rightfully so. If the Death Star super-brains did one thing well this year, it was in building a massive NAPA-style replacement database for spare parts... but only among position players.

All year, the vaunted Yankee bullpen has remained at the crossroads of Heaven and Hell. After the Fab Five - El Chapo, Otto, Tommy K, Zack with a K, and Mean Chad Green - the pickin's grow incredibly slim. At that point, it's "Next Prayer Up."

Aside from David Hale - currently injured - the 2019 Yankees have failed to develop, even temporarily, one honest-to-goodness, newly functioning bullpen lug nut. Nobody stepped up. When the starter gets whacked - always a possibility - Aaron Boone quickly faces a doomsday decision: Bring in the A-team, or watch the game quickly disappear.

On the season, we have thrown the hordes of Hell at that final piece. Nobody succeeded.

Jonathan Holder couldn't hold. Then came Nestor Octavio-Cortes Jr., Johnny Lasagna, Fat Chance Adams, Luis Cesspool and Stephen Tarpley. We tried "Moon Goggles" Harvey and "Mickey" Mantiply and - lately - we've been literally turning over sea shells - Ryan Dull, Tyler Lyons, Cory Gearren, the toe-tapper - in search of alien life. Tomorrow, if he's ready, Billy Crystal could be warming up.  We will take a flier on anybody - anybody. But a month from now, if Tanaka can't place his splitter, we could be watching "Boone's Goons" take a game off the rails.

Yesterday, Cortes turned a 3-0 nail-biter into a joke. Two days ago, it was Dull, (who is anything but.) No one has stepped from the Abyss. In the Yankee bullpen, Boone's cry of "Next Man Up" is a sad wail in a godless universe.

Which is why we cling to what is, realistically, a ridiculous hope: Dellin Betances. As much we dream of the old Betances - the fearsome, dominating, Cat 4 force - it just doesn't seem possible. Betances has too many moving parts, too many physical and mental issues, and barely a month to conquer them. Today, he'll throw off the mound. The Yankees will announce that "all went well!" and he'll throw again later this week. But the minors are done, we're in a dogfight with Houston over home field advantage, and the Yankees cannot afford many horrible outings from Betances, as he rounds into shape.

The other hope - far lesser, in my opinion - is CC Sabathia suddenly transitioning to a role he's avoided in the last 20 years. Once again, it's a war between the heart and head. First off, anybody who bunts against CC gets a gift single. His best response is to scream at the opposing dugout and maybe bean the next batter. While the bunt is truly a lost MLB art, I would hate to rely on Sabathia covering first in a close playoff game. Really... a LOOGY? Nah.

When the Yankees set their October roster, they will surely name 12 to 13 pitchers. After four starters and the Big Four Five, that leaves at least three mop-up bodies. God help us if they pitch.

  1. I hope you dont mind me reposting part of a post I did on another topic not sure anyone saw it (or did and died of boredom reading it!!!!)

Brian Keller is my new Mike Ford he had a dodgy start in AAA but is now figuring things out and worth at least a look maybe?

I know his recent stats dont jump out at you but he seems to do this every time he is promoted he gets off to a slow start then gets better and better

    http://www.milb.com/player/index.jsp?player_id=662144#/career/R/pitching/2019/ALL

    PREVIOUS POST BELOW

My new pet project is Brian Keller

He was drafted in the 39th round and seemed to be a non prospect in every site I checked
He was good at every level and threw a 70 pitch shutout in AA.
He has been promoted to AAA and the results have been mixed with him getting battered for 11 runs in one start and his walk rate is way higher but Im sure he will figure it out as he has done each time he is promoted and he still strikes out a lot of batters and if he ever throws an inning in the Majors it will be pretty amazing he is a very easy player to root for.
Maybe a long shot but he is perhaps quietly good and he could be added to the 40 man roster?

Anyway thanks for making me so welcome on this blog it makes the games so much more fun when you can have a wee laugh and joke with fellow fans.

  2. I applaud any player championed by a man who uses the word "dodgy." (Pardon my American punctuation.)

What happened to the kid they signed this summer? You know, the one who was a gift from the Almighty, ready to buzz down batters in AAA and the Stadium? Forget his name. Age.

The bullpen is yet more evidence that Cashman and the Statmen cannot figure out how to assess pitchers like they assess position players. Is it just them, or do other teams have the same issue? Mysterious.

Bring up Keller. He can't be worse than the warm bodies we've been using up until now.

Hell, bring up everybody and see if one of them can pitch. Nothing to lose. Except Man Boobs fucking up their heads and deliveries.

  3. JM, would you say Man Boobs is "knackered"?

I nominate Scottish Yankee fan to be Yankees Farm Director. Worth at least five wins over the course of the year.

As for Duque's original post, forget LOOGY. I'd nominate Carston Charles to be the designated lost cause inspiration for the playoffs.

When the Yankees are down three from bad umpiring and opposing pitchers throwing at our guys, bring him in in relief. Can't be worse than the NAPA OEM parts. Have him bark at the opposing players and the umps, hit a few batters and get ejected. He won't face too many batters and won't be able to do too much damage.

Worse case, it puts the opposing team on their heels for the next game. Best case, he gets the boys charged up for a rally win. Especially if we face the Satanic DEVIL Rays.

  4. Why does Boone leave Cortes in when he is clearly unravelling? Second guess, sure, quit while you are ahead, won't you, but you got a good inning and two thirds out of him, don't put the game out of reach. Just saying.

  5. Boone is keeping the good bullpen arms rested. The fucking moron.

Rufus, Man Boobs must certainly be knackered after all the pole dancing. I wonder if he wears pasties.

What we need is a non-pitcher, a guy who can only throw a Folly Floater or drill someone. He takes the assignment knowing he'll be drummed out of the league in short order, but takes the money and the Yankees benefit.

Think Winnie is up to it?

    ReplyDelete
  6. Of course, the guy does not HAVE to be a guy.

    Just saying. Bonus PR points.

  7. Winnie for Drillmaster!

...and Man Boobs is both knackered *and* knockered!

  8. I don't know how you guys can concentrate on such unimportant issues while Scranton's entire season is on the line today.

    "One day more
One day more to take for us the North
To beat the Mets up in their Sky
One day more to dream of the Governor's Cup
Or on defeat's bitter meal to sup!
    One day more
One day more to live or die for Cashman
To take the prize he prizes most
    To vanquish mighty Syracuse
Where El Duque sips his booze.
    One day more!"

  9. It's a Hobson's Choice and I don't mean Butch. Boone needs to find additional bullpen arms he can rely on.

    1) The only way to find out who has the right stuff in high leverage situations is to pitch them there. Boone has to bring these guys in close games.

    2) There's no place to hide. When a bull pen guy has a bad game or isn't up to it they generally lose the game or put it out of reach.

As opposed to a position player. The worst that guy can do in get a golden sombrero, hit in to rally killing DPs, or make a big error in the field. The other players can pick him up. Not so the pitcher. There were games where the "next man up" sucked. It's just harder to notice.

    3) Boon e needs to find this guy/s now!

    4) I'm not worried about winning home field (although I would like to.) because...

If we lose the home field advantage we get to face Minnesota before we have to face Houston.

Also, and this is interesting, the Astros are 3-4 against Tampa. So maybe they can get knocked off.

    4) If we win home field advantage we have to face the winner of TB /OAK. And they both play us tough But... the Astros are 3-4 against Minn. So there's that.

There's no conclusion here. The games will play out. There is no easy road. If you want to be the champion ya gotta beat em all.

As to the rotation... I understand why Boone keeps sending these guys out there.

Personally (and I am wrong a lot)I think if Sevi can come back as an effective opener our rotation becomes...

    "Playoff" Tanaka
    Newly revised Paxton
    AL Wins leader Domingo
and a Sevi to Green opener game.

We should be more or less OK.

  16. Thanks, Stratman! I'm putting it up for the Tony's this year.

And ranger, this is terrible news. I fear that if he's already lost the Governor's Cup, even a World Series ring will seem like ashes in, uh, ON Cashman's finger. We can hardly expect him to concentrate for the rest of the season, much less put together a champion.

  28. Les Miz is not really my idea of a top Broadway show, Doug K.—too many ballads and too much by-the-numbers emoting. But it does have some good, rousing stuff.

    Such as...

"Do you hear the Metsies cry
As they tumble from the Sky?
    It's music to our ears
As we Ride the Rails again.
Will you win the Cup for Coops
Or sit there upon your stoops?

Do you hear all Scranton sing?
Singing the songs of angry fans
It's the music of a city
That will not be foiled again!
When the beating of your heart
Echoes the beating of our bats
There is a Cup about to be won
    If tomorrow comes!"

    Or, something like that.

  31. Can we get back to the important stuff, the original spirit of the comments on this post, namely: "bad Anglicisms?"

Because, if for a second, you'll indulge my inner 8-year old's anglophile and logophilic tendencies, I have been longing for weeks to say: "Imagine a world where Rothchild's bollocks are thwapping against Boonie's bum as the team watches their batsman coach get buggered again by the syphlitic sybarite of a cricket bowler."

Okay, I'll get back to serious business now.

And yes, Doug K, on that ideal playoff rotation scenario. By the way, can you recommend some lotto numbers for me to play this week?

  33. I checked in on MiLB Gameday. Who is this terrible D Hernandez pitching for SWB? Oh, oh he's that Dave Hernandez. https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/h/hernada01.shtml Note that the career journeyman (lifetime earnings $14.4 million) has been more or less bad at major league baseball. He pitched to a negative 1.8 WAR for Cincinnati this year!! Why is he fucking up SWB!?

  43. Rufus, it's a tough job, but I'm trying to help us to collectively build character. Just breath deeply and think about how good it was for both Boner and Nutsack, the scene I described. It might be hard on the rookies to witness such carnage, but they're in the big leagues now and it will help them to build character, as well.

    ReplyDelete
  44. So basically one of the greatest "playoff" games in history. Thank you Ranger for the updates. It was almost like being there.

  47. Hoss,

I get my music about the French Revolution from Alan Sherman

Louie the Sixteenth was the King of France in 1789.
He was worse than Louie the Fifteenth
He was worse than Louie the Fourteenth
He was worse than Louie the Thirteenth.
He was the worst... since King Louie the First.

I suppose if I had to be more recent, the revolution music would be of the Prince and the... type. You know,
