It ain't Coney

The New York Yankees hired Matt Blake as their new pitching coach, poaching one of the key cogs in the Cleveland Indians' pitching-development machine as the replacement for longtime coach Larry Rothschild, sources told ESPN.
Blake, who was promoted two days ago by Cleveland to director of pitching development, adds a coach well-versed in analytics and progressive pitching philosophies to a Yankees organization that focused its search on younger coaches -- including a handful who work at the collegiate level.

Second hire of the offseason: On Tuesday, they pilfered Tanner Swanson from the Twins to be their new big-league catching coach, replacing Jason Brown, whose role in the organization is currently unclear. Swanson will be tasked with getting more out of the frustrating but talented Gary Sanchez.

A question: Will the Yankees keep around bullpen coach Mike Harkey? He’s been In his current role with the team since 2015, the last remaining holdover from the Joe Girardi era on the big-league coaching staff.

  4. Harkey is a very large individual. I would be scared to fire him.

  5. (More) Seriously, while phrases such as "a coach well-versed in analytics and progressive pitching philosophies" strike fear in my heart, at least he's not Larry Rothschild.

And...Cleveland does have a good track record in recent years in developing pitchers. So there's that.

More to the point, I think, is whether or not the new guy actually listens to his pitchers and works WITH them, as opposed to just telling them to throw pitches they're obviously uncomfortable with.

As for the new catching coach, I don't what program he could develop to get Gary back on track, but I can only think it would have to involve a two-by-four and a taser.

  7. Winnie, the new catching coach needs to borrow the brick that keeps bouncing off your head.

He's starting to work on Ice Cream over the winter.
