Yesterday, Gleyber Torres botched two grounders but - in a charitable ruling by the scorer - tallied only one error. It was an act of human kindness. Gleyber's throws this spring have been Frisbees. He shows the footwork of Ellen Degeneres. He's made five errors in 10 games - (and keep in mind, he only plays a few innings.) That's five oops-es in 23 total chances, for a fielding percentage of - gulp - .783, which is Sam Horn country. Worst of all, Gleyber's glove may be undermining his bat; he's hitting only .200.
Put simply, the Yankees best and most indispensable player is having a terrible spri-WE INTERRUPT THIS POST WITH A SPECIAL REPORT FROM IIHIIFIIc HEADQUARTERS: THERE IS NO CAUSE FOR PANIC! REPEAT: NO CAUSE FOR PANIC! THERE IS ABSOLUTELY NO REASON TO PROMOTE DOOMSDAY FEARS AND/OR CLUBHOUSE CHAOS. WE DO NOT HAVE TO RUN OUT AND TRADE FOR A DEFENSIVE SHORTSTOP. THERE IS NO NEED FOR US TO SIGN A MIDDLE INFIELDER OFF THE SCRAP HEAP. REPEATING: THERE IS NO NEED FOR PANIC! YANKEE FANS ARE INSTRUCTED TO WASH THEIR HANDS, AVOID TOUCHING THEIR FACES, AND STAY HOME. REPEATING: STAY HOME AND DO NOT PANIC! AVOID BARS, OFFICES, STORES, AIRPORTS, LIBRARIES, NURSING HOMES, HOSPITALS, COFFEE SHOPS, LIBRARIES, SCHOOLS, NEIGHBORS, STOP LIGHTS AND LIVING ROOM COUCHES. WATCH GAMES FROM HOME. AND EVEN IF THE ERRORS CONTINUE, DO NOT DRINK THE SANITIZER! WE RETURN NOW TO REGULAR PROGRAMMING... -ich means, holy crap, Gleyber moves back to 2B, bumping DJ to 1B, and sending Luke Voit and Mike Ford to oblivion, if not Scranton. (The Yankees would have a five-man DH rotation: Stanton, Andujar, Frazier, Voit and Ford.)
And if you're thinking of Kyle Holder - the storied glove man/first round SS pick not named Cito Culver - he's hitting .250 this spring, with one error in 23 chances.
After that, the Yankees have 1) Tyler Wade, who we have returned to Scranton for the last three years, 2) Thairo Estrada, who is more a utility man than everyday SS, 3) Hoy Jun Park, a 23-year-old slow-riser from Coronaville, Korea, who is ticketed for Double A, and 4) Max Burt, a 2018 draft pick out of Northwestern, who hit .222 in the low minors last year and - I never even heard of the guy before; what's he doing in exhibition games?
Basically, we're going to go with Gleyber until he cannot do it. Then - well - panic. Can Gio Urshela play SS?
Good thing we let Didi walk. Now we have the league right where we want it.
ReplyDeleteTO BE HONEST, I REALLY DIDN'T UNDERSTAND WHY WE LET DIDI GO.
ReplyDeleteHE HAD SURGERY, AND CAME BACK FOR THE 2ND HALF OF THE SEASON.
HE ACTUALLY HIT PRETTY WELL (AND FIELDED GREAT).
THE ONLY THING THAT WAS LAGGING WAS HIS OBP.
THIS SEASON, HE SHOULD BE FULLY RECOVERED.
HE MAY PUT UP A MONSTER SEASON OFFENSIVELY.
FROM THE LEFT SIDE, MAY I ADD...
NOT TO MENTION A PLAYER, AND FAN FAVORITE.
LET ME TELL YOU, THIS CASHMAN AND HIS CRACK ANALYTICS STAFF SURE KNOW HOW TO SPOT A PLAYER ON THE DOWNSWING...
WATCH.
ReplyDeleteDidi is hitting .083 right now -- kinda similar to ICS. That's after going 2-for-2 yesterday.
Were he doing that for the NYYs, would you be lamenting the fact that they kept him?
I am also a fan of the Nationals. LOTS of Nats' fans moaned after the departure of Bryce Harper (from DC to Philly on a big muffin contract in the 18-19 off-season). The Phillies went nowhere. The Nats won the whole damn thing -- despite having a horrible bullpen for most of the year.
Put a positive spin on it. Maybe it would be better to have Gleyber at 2B and DJL at 1B, and a good-field/little-hit SS. Or maybe Gleyber will perform better once the bell rings.
You can put a negative spin on anything Cashman+Hal do. But it's kind of early to punt, doncha think?
I LOVE YOUR POSITIVITY JOE...
ReplyDeleteYOU'RE THE BEACON OF POSITIVITY ON THIS CROTCHETY (BUT AWESOME) SITE...
I'M NOT PUNTING ON THE SEASON, IT'S JUST THAT ALL THIS INJURY CRAP HAS ME DOWN.
....AND IT JUST GALLS ME THAT CASHMAN IS PULLING ALL THE STRINGS IN THIS ORGANIZATION.
HE HAS PROVEN TO BE A DECENT DUMPSTER DIVER AS OF LATE, BUT HE CAN RARELY, IF EVER MAKE A TRADE THAT HELPS US, ESPECIALLY IN THE PITCHING DEPARTMENT. (ANY GM CAN BUY A FREE AGENT).
....AND HE HAS TO BE RESPONSIBLE FOR ASSEMBLING THIS TEAM THAT PERPETUALLY INCURS ALL THESE INJURIES THAT NO OTHER TEAM COMES CLOSE TO.
30 TEAMS!
ONLY US. (YEAR AFTER YEAR TOO)!
THERE HAS TO BE BLAME FOR HIM HERE, IN THIS SITUATION.
@el duque...tnx for the countup clock on Yankee injuries...it's important that we have this on the site...but like the coronavirus, it doesn't take into account the Yankee injuries NOT reported...smh.
ReplyDeleteSad to say, I think letting Didi go might have been the right move—though in the usual, shortsighted Cashman way, trading him before he could walk would have at least netted us some bodies. But Coops never does this—see Hughes and Joba.
ReplyDeleteOn returned from the DL, Didi hit only .238 the rest of the way, albeit with some power but also 53 Ks and just 17 walks in 82 games. In the playoffs, after that wonderful grand slam against the Twins, he looked even worse, hitting just .217 with no homers and no ribbies against Houston.
At 30, I could see not committing to him again. If Gleyber really is our shortstop of the future, let's see it.
Shouldn't the count up clock reset now that Sanchez has been diagnosed with the flu?
ReplyDeleteThen again, Yankees getting hurt while recovering from an injury should not count as a new injury. That clock would be useless
Yay, Verlander injury! Don’t let Coronavirus crowd out Astros-hating.
ReplyDeleteHOSS I THINK DIDI IS A SHOO-IN FOR 25 HOMERS AND 85 RIBBIES THIS SEASON.
ReplyDeleteCOULD WE NOT USE THAT (FROM THE LEFT SIDE), PLUS HIS NEAR GOLD GLOVE?
I...DON'T...KNOWWWWWWW....
PLEASE GLEYBER, MAKE IT ALL WORK OUT...PLEASE.
Well... if we get the offense we expect from Gleyber and the General, we should be good.
ReplyDeleteBut who knows?
