Here's what he said...
"My white privilege has allowed me to be oblivious to the true magnitude of oppression the black community faces. My silence to this point is also a product of my white privilege. I’m beginning to realize my privilege and ignorance. Time to listen, learn, and take action. #blacklivesmatter...
"I understand that I will never understand. However, I stand with you."
I must have missed the posts by Food Stamps Hal Steinbrenner. I can't seem to find any. Same with Randy Levine, the former future candidate for White House chief of staff. Randy's lips are sealed. Yankee front office? Nuthin. Management? Tongue-tied.Has anybody within the Yankee organization noticed that George Floyd's brother, Terrence, wears a Yankee cap in public?
Of course, New York sports franchises only seem to talk when there is money in it. The Knicks? Quiet as a mouse. The Giants? How about that Daniel Jones! The entire NFL? It's still trying to rewrite the story of Colin Kaepernick.
James Paxton stepped up.
Yeah, I know... baby steps. But now and then, in the matter of hope, that's all you get.
And today, Paxton is my favorite Yankee.
I too saw that Instagram post. Liked him before but now WOW. Perfectly said.
ReplyDeleteAnd now that you mention it, where are the Steinbrenners? Hiding in their bunker with Mango Mussolini here in DC?
Big Maple stands tall. I'm now a fan, too.
ReplyDeleteGreat.
Hey, hey, hey now, people! Just a minute here!
ReplyDeleteLet's remember how many amazing things the Yankees have done for the Bronx.
There was the destruction of that big public park that was so annoying, the years of construction with all those local people hired, the huge tax breaks they've grabbed for themselves so the money doesn't have to go to annoying things like subways or daycare.
The Steinbrenners: the people's friends.
He's been my favorite Yankee since he's been a Yankee. Soon he'll be a free agent and hopefully back in his native Northwest, where he belongs.
ReplyDeleteThis is a nice Yankees feel good story. But I must confess I'm still a traditionalist when it comes to the mindless recitation of imposed dogma. Give me a good old fashioned "I believe in one God, the father the almighty, creator of heaven and earth, of all that is seen and unseen. I believe in his son Jesus Christ, eternally begotten of the father, for from god, light from light, begotten not made, one being with the father, etc" any day over this new fangled stuff.
ReplyDeleteI grew up in a town with few black families. There were only two black students in my class in high school. I was blissfully unaware of the realities of the outside world. Then I saw the speech by Dr. King in Washington in 1963, and it jolted me. I got it.
ReplyDeleteBut like many of us, my good intentions were held inside. Many years later a black friend at work asked me, "When you get up in the morning, do you say, 'I'm white?' "No," I said.
He said, " Not a day goes by when I don't look in the mirror and realize I'm black." Without going into detail he described the prejudice he endured.
This was a guy who worked his way up in our company successfully. The message to me then and now is that minorities of all kinds live with a feeling of vulnerability that those of us in the majority can never understand.
Big Maple stepped up big time for the whole Yankee universe. These words should have been said by Prince Hal.
ReplyDeleteThe Hammer of God
