Plague Theater: The Scott Brosius Miracle

The best part is McCarver, after a long silence, simply saying, "I have never seen anything like it."

Thank you so much for this! It literally brought tears to my eyes, as the last Yankee games I saw - live! - were in September 2001, and this is the team I most remember. Seeing all those faces again, roaring with joy... well, I really miss it!

At least we are having slow openings here, and as of this week masks are no longer mandatory except in public transportation and taxis, doctors' offices, hospitals and apothecaries, hair cutters and nail salons, and anywhere where a distance of less than one meter cannot be maintained.

I was one of 100 people who won the chance to buy a ticket for one of eight concerts by the Wiener Symphoniker (Vienna Symphony) last week at the Musikverein (if you've ever seen the Vienna Philharmonic's annual New Year's Day concert on TV, you've seen the magnificent "golden hall" built in 1840). I was seated on one of three chairs in a loge with a normal capacity of 20. It was strange, being in a 1.700 seat hall with only 99 other people. We were required to wear masks only when moving about (and no intermission) but the orchestra was neither distanced nor masked. After a brilliant all-Beethoven program ending with the Third Symphony (the "Eroica"), the conductor bumped elbows with his first chair players instead of shaking hands, as did all the other orchestra members with each other. Each month, capacities will increase, and cinemas are now open. The Grafenegg Festival, where the main venue is an outdoor arena which hold 2.100, will go on with no changes to its schedule in August/September with audiences limited to 1.250.

I know it sounds naive, but I think you will just have to be a bit more patient, and please keep wearing your masks, keep your distance, and stay at home as much as you can! From the news I read online, America is has quite a way to go before many things can reopen safely.

  3. Good to hear, Austria, and glad you got to enjoy the concert.

And here, well, for the most part those of us in Northeastern states, having absorbed the hard lesson, are doing much as you say. We're slowly coming out of lockdown in NYC, but face masks are still everywhere, even in demos.

The rest of the country, though, is racing back, and I fear that will bring on a second lockdown. Strange days indeed!
