J.A. Happ turned in yet another desultory start for the Yankees' fading starting staff today, falling behind the Oakland Beaneballs by 6-3 in the fourth inning.
All that was left was...the hitting. A grand slam home run by Aaron Hicks led the comeback, on an afternoon in which Mike Tauchman, the revived Giancarlo Stanton, and Clint Frazier all slammed roundtrippers, for a 9-8 win. Reliever Chad Green got credit for the W, while Aroldis "Cool Hand" Chapman got the save.
The win brought the Bombers to within one game of the frontrunning TB Rays. But the question remains of whether the Yankees have enough pitching to get through the remaining 44 games of the season, despite the sparkling hitting that has brought their record to 81-37.
"We're comin' in on a wing and prayer. It'll be dead cats and brickbats all the way to the end," said manager Ma Boone, who confessed to having watched several hours of World War II movies the night before. "But if we keep a cool head, if we do a gut check and come up with all our intestines in place, why then we might just make it!"
