And So It Goes....

Luke Voit, recently returned from the IL, has gone back on it.

Our lead-off hitter swings with an exit velocity of 116 mph and, when he misses the ball ( 8 times out of ten est. ), it puts s strain on those oblique muscles.

So he is sitting down for a while.

Speaking of which, our number two starter ( of recent no hit fame ) is " not going to throw for 4 weeks."

Then what, said I?

They will look again and see if he can loosen up with a bouncy ball.  No reason for concern here, eh?  "Not at all like last time, " right Corey?

So now the question surfaces:

Who will be our number two starter?  It won't be Devi because he can't get the ball across the plate in minor-league ball. It won't be Jessica Dominguez because he doesn't pitch.

It won't be that other guy we used to count on, because he never made it out of spring training...what's his name?  Pitched at South Carolina, I think.  Another once top prospect? Aha is it Clarke Schmidt I seek?  I have already forgotten him.

Can't " speed up" old Severino because he got cut real late.

How about we trade some young prospects for an old guy?

What think, Brian?

Time to cash in all remaining chips on a clunker?

Thank God it is raining.

  1. Well, Severino will be back by the end of next month, if not sooner barring any setback. He's ahead of schedule. He will soon be pitching in minor league games. So he will be Kluber's replacement in the rotation.

I remember when WPIX had rain delays that were expected to be long or when they ultimately got cancelled. In both, Superman episodes from the 1950's or Abbott & Costello circa 1950 would air. If the game was cancelled late in the half our it was usually A&C. Even if there a few minutes remaining until the next half-hour slot started, they would still show A&C's 1 minute curtain call where, inevitably, Costello would give a dumb answer and get smacked around by Abbot as they exited the stage. Fond memories!

  2. Oh, Severino last pitched effectively on July 1st, 2018—almost three years ago. After that night he was 13-2, with a 1.98 ERA, and he looked like maybe the best pitcher in baseball.

It's a major bummer, but eagerly awaiting his return reminds of how it felt waiting for Britt Burns or Gil Patterson or Steve Kline to bounce back from their injuries. It ain't gonna happen, my friends.

Same with Corey, I suspect. Thought of another comeback pitcher who was doomed by the Curse of the No-Hitter: Johann Santana. Do you remember? Came back after a long rehab, threw the only no-hitter in Mets history—all right, Carlos Beltran actually got a hit, but still—and barely pitched again.

"Too much velocity, not enough command." You can write that epitaph on baseball's gravestone.

  3. I can't believe that a guy who has pitched 1 inning in the last 2 years is hurt. He's out 2 months which in NYY time is the season. Then another Iron Man, Luke Voit is out, for god knows how long. How does a team have so many guys go down with Oblique injuries? When every season is based on dumpster diving this what you get.
