HoraceClarke66: "29 in a row, Baby!"

(From the embittered pen of HoraceClarke66...)

 No. 82, at last! Woo-hoo!

So, that was another wet dog of a game. Terrible clutch hitting—and lots of terrible hitting in general, against nothing pitchers. An awful relief appearance from “Hanging Chad" Green. Again. Sancho fielded pitches like a man playing with a kitchen mitt on his right hand.

And Gleyber Torres, playing like a man who just awakened from a cryonic sleep of several centuries, made a ridiculous mental error on the basepaths just minutes after he’d made a ridiculous mental error in the field.

Without a heaping helping of luck, we ain’t winning that one.

And who cares???

The Gleyber came dancing through the raindrops to score. Flopsweat somehow baffled the Birdies.

We WON. Twenty-nine winning seasons in a row. And really—don't count on winning another damned thing!

“Come to my arms, my beamish boy[s]!
Oh frabjous day, Callooh, Callay!”

  1. We are a ragged band of terrified immigrants clinging desperately to a leaking life raft, awaiting the inevitable doom that surely will overtake us. And yet, we know we only need step outside the boat with the knowledge that the water is only two feet deep.

Run! Save yourselves from the fate that awaits you! Run while there's still time!

  2. I know everyone is rejoicing in the aura of 29 straight winning seasons, but looking at the remaining schedule.... things look bleak.

    Boston Remaining Schedule
    6 vs. Orioles
    3 vs. Yankees (at Fenway)
    3 vs. Nationals
    2 vs. Mets

The Sox also have FOUR off days scheduled, so they'll keep their bullpen and lineup nice and fresh.

What do we expect Boston to do? Even if the Yankees miraculously win one at Fenway and the Mets split and the Nats grab a game, that's still a 11-3 record to end things. Heck, give the Orioles a game too and make it 10-4.

Sox end with a 93-69 record.

    Toronto Remaining Schedule
    7 vs. Twins
    3 vs. Rays
3 vs. Yankees (at Rogers Centre)
    3 vs. Orioles

The Jays are gonna score approximately 15 runs per game against the terrible Twins pitching staff. They've already shown they can handle the Rays and Yankees. So what do we expect? 12-4? 11-5?

Jays end the season with a 93-69 record.

    New York Remaining Schedule
    3 vs. Indians
    3 vs. Rangers
    3 vs. Red Sox
    3 vs. Blue Jays
    3 vs. Rays
    1 vs. Orioles

Let's be optimistic here and say the Yankees beat the Orioles this afternoon, sweep the Rangers, and win 2/3 against the Indians. I know, I know. Just bear with me. That's 6 wins. Let's be even more optimistic and say the Yankees avoid getting swept by the three superior teams they face and simply lose each series 1-2. That's another 3 wins. So that's a 9-7 run to end the year. A .562 winning percentage which exactly matches their season winning percentage.

Yankees end the season with a 91-71 record.

I just don't see a path for this team to sneak into the Wild Card Game based on the remaining schedule.

  3. WOW celebrating 29 years of .500 or better baseball. 1 WS since 2000. My guess is next they will be hanging WC participants flags in Monument Park.

  4. Sadly, you're probably right, Celerino.

    ZacharyA, I agree.

Our only remaining hopes for a WC spot are:

—Take all 3 against the Indians, too. Unlikely, but possible.

—The Sox' pitching blows up again, and we take 2-3 in Boston. Quite unlikely, but possible.

—The Rays have clinched, and are happy to tank against us to keep Boston or Toronto out of the playoffs. Unknowable.

Some combination of the above COULD get us to 94 wins. But I'd say it's highly unlikely.

    More like Dem Bums.

  6. Pathetically run organization fronted by the owner who cares only about every last dime he can squeeze from every revenue source. No accountability from anyone ever in the Bloated Front Office and management team. Or coaches and players. They all ride on that same wave of cash.

You have come to the wrong blog for optimism friend.

  8. Yeah, I'd be shocked if this Yankee team makes the WC. The difference came down to the terrible losing streak. And the half dozen or so games over the course of the season, which we had in the bank, but that Boone threw in the garbage can. Most recently against the Orioles, when we had a 3 run lead late & our favorite pitcher Heaney gave up 4 to lose. The two games that we blew against the cheating ASS-tros. The 7-0 lead we blew against the Angels.

    The Hammer of God

  9. No team lost more games to the Orioles this year than the Yankees (7 losses).

The Yankees also went 19-29 (.395) vs. the Rays, Red Sox, and Blue Jays.

When you play that poorly against your own division, you can't expect to make the playoffs.

  10. Gallo hits a home run! 3-year contract on the way!

  11. Every moment of every game right now is vital and there’s Boooooone, sitting on his hands, not challenging a play that he might have won.

What the fuck does it take for this (fill in the appropriate words or words) to grow some balls?

    ReplyDelete
  12. DickAllen, Boone has balls. They are locked in Hal's wallsafe.

  13. Any explanation from the talking heads on why Callo is in right and Glassman in left, rather than the other way around?

I wish Ken Singleton would announce for another 10 years.

  14. Winnie, that safe has to be at least the size of a matchbox.

  15. Ok, the question left in this game is -- which member of the arson squad will give up the winning run?

Yankee offense is pretty offensive, and not in a good way.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Our idiot manager is forever trying to squeeze an extra out or two out of the pitcher and he invariably gets burned by it. When is he ever going to learn?

    ReplyDelete
  17. Wait, wait, I know this one!

    Never?

    ReplyDelete
  18. I am here, but commented out. Weird, I know.

  19. Winnie speechless? What next -- Boone grows a brain and a pair? Who'da thunk it?

  20. Could see that train wreck coming a mile away.

  21. There are many ways to suck in baseball and the Yankees are determined to display them all

    ReplyDelete
  22. There is something akin to True Majesty the way this team just refuses to win.

    ReplyDelete
  23. There. I've been unblocked the the True Fuckery of this game.

    ReplyDelete
  24. The Master is so pissed at the pace of the Baltimore pitcher and the Yankees not moving the runner over.

    ReplyDelete
  25. New levels of suckitude.

Rizzo should have just grabbed his bat.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Easily-earned and richly deserved loss.

    ReplyDelete
  27. They drew 20,164, but there's a concert after the game.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Rizzo with 3 HRs in his first 6 games as a Yankee—and 3 in his 28 since then.

He's dead weight. So is half the team. One more hit today, one less fielding blunder, one more out...

This is the One More Team—and they just ran up One More awful loss. This will be One More season without a World Series win.

  29. Dante (not our Dantes, but the guy from the 1300's) had the 9 circles of hell.

We have the 162 circles of Yankee suckitude. Even when they win, it's painful.

  30. The refuse-to-win Yanks' efforts were matched by the refuse-to-win Giants tonight. Fiddle dee dee.
