Is it safe to go back in the water?

In baseball, bottom-feeding is a necessity, as many of us have noted here. You want to be able to knock off the big boys—like those damned BJ's, stopping in again for a two-game set this week.

(Paul O'Neill Warning: the one of the games will be a day game after a night game, so the Yankees may be unable to drag their battered, aching bodies out to the field for that contest.)

But beating the bad teams counts just as much in the standings—and in these tanking days, it's mostly bad teams. The Yanks have got to keep on keeping on, because there's no bottom feeder like a Ray.

TB got off to a sluggish, 5-6 start this season, one that had to make you wonder if they had finally outfoxed themselves with their constant churn of players.

But no. The Rays are now 18-12, and just 3 games back, despite being pummeled by the Angels last night, and the Haloes' new ace, Noah Syndergaard.  (Looking at you, Brian Cashman, the GM who never met a good veteran pitcher he liked.)

They're back with their usual roster full of annoying role players—Manuel Margot, Randy Arozarena, Yandy Diaz, Kevin Keirmaier, and of course, Ji-Man Choi—a budding superstar in Wander Franco, and a deep if largely anonymous pitching staff...including the likes of Corey Kluber and J.P. Feyereisen (Cashman!).

Only way our boys are going to stay ahead of this nemesis is to keep beating down the Texas Rangers of the world. And even then, we don't want to encounter this weird, nightmarish creature in the playoffs (assuming we get there).

  1. Suddenly I'm craving fish for dinner. Yum!

  2. The Yankees didn't exactly beat down on Texas.

  3. Our offense should be ready after taking the weekend and Monday off. (snark snark) Unless the usual inexplicable outage continues tonight.

  4. It looks as though Gallo will be tending to his seedless grapes this evening while resting on the vine.

  5. And of course Hicks comes in to botch a ball at the wall. After Torres botches a routine grounder. Oh, they're all fired up this evening...and it looks as though Sevvy has nothing.

All while our fabulous mayor is busy giving himself credit for everything. Great broadcast tonight.

  7. Seems like it might get late early tonight…

  8. I suppose pitching was going to come down to earth at some point, but they've scored just 6 runs in the last 4+ games. That ain't gonna cut it most days

  9. Once again: Gallo is a fucking useless, turdlet and pus filled fuckface fucker.

  10. After the 5th inning the Yankees appear to be hit free. How nice.

  11. Wow, and they hit Donaldson? Bizarre. The guy's almost a sure out. I don't want my pitcher putting the go-ahead run on base in the sixth, when he has almost no chance to get on under his own power.

  12. Stranger and stranger: Garcia and their manager both ejected. I guess directives have come down.

  13. Suddenly the season has become\ somewhat more exciting than making my fish sandwiches

  14. Old friend David Phelps in there. We sent him with Martin Prado to the Marlins, for Eovaldi, Domingo German, and Garret Jones.

  15. Wild game. Or at least, wild umpiring.

  16. Joey G. in pinch-hitting. We are informed that he didn't start because, "He is a little banged up."

Yeah, he actually had to run to first once yesterday.

  17. A walk! A walk for Joey! After two, count 'em two, foul-ball homers!

  18. Just not enough hitting on this team. You get past DJ, Rizzo, Judge, and Stanton, and there's nothing.

Possibly Donaldson or The Gleyber will improve, but they ain't shown' it yet. And the rest...when was the last time a Yankees team went a month without a home run from a catcher or a shortstop?

  19. Vladdie, Jr., was doing his best to run into an out at the plate, but a bad throw by Hicks and a bad relay by Donaldson.

  20. Sorry, the bad relay was by Falafel. But really, this was a ball that Hicks played badly, and got in way too slow.

If he's going to hit like he does, Hicks has got to give us consistently great defense. Cammie going on about how he was unfamiliar with left field—but this ain't Fenway.

Amazing, too, that Joey is too "banged up" already. What a warrior!

  21. I'm going to just focus on the great meal here and lament the pending loss a little bit later in our show. Try the veal. Don't forget to tip your waitress. And remember - there's no coming back from Nuclear War.

  22. As Howard used to say, "How do ya like that"?!

  23. Hee-hee. Mr. Steinbrenner, he gonna have to shell out some bucks.

  24. The best thing about a walk-off win is we don’t have to see Chapman pitch.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Not bad, huh?
Judge on pace for 56 HR’s.

  26. How much wood would a Waldichuk chuck if a Waldichuk could chuck wood?

  27. And the fish sandwiches were still great !

  28. Amen, Hinkey! Any night we can avoid Torrents is like a night with sunshine. Or something like that.

  29. And for desert, the Angels no-hit the infernal Rays. I know that predictions are Fool's follies in May, but the only team that might stop us from making the WS is the Astros. Assuming that the Stygian Witches grant good health. In the early going the team seems to have a good foundation of pitching and defense, but unless Gallo retools his swing, an alternative must be found.

  30. Kevin , Gallo can't retool his swing.

As my Dad used to say,
"For a baseball player, he's a great golfer."
