Anyone Notice The Elephant?

At the end of the 5th inning yesterday ( yanks leading, at home, 3-0, with Cole coasting), I texted both Mustang and Duque the following:

"we are going to lose this game.  We just had runners in scoring position with one out, and two Yankees struck out."

As a stimulus for this concern, Hicks ( who was hitting really well) just fouled a fastball off of his shin,  and was leaving the field under assist by the trainers. " Cold, hot, hurt," as one of our pundits coined.

There is peril everywhere.

But not a single world was mentioned by the blathering TV commentators, about who was asked to close out this ballgame. It was a no brainer, even for Boone, to select Holmes.

But it didn't take great baseball genius, or a  major league resume, to see that something was way, way wrong with Holmes.  Soon, even the great minds on the Yankee bench could see it unraveling for him.

So then what happens?

Wandy Peralta.

Not a whisper of " the elephant" to which I refer in the headline.  How far down, exactly, as Chapman fallen?  He is the man with the talent and the experience. He has the credentials for these moments.

Is he " done?"  Does Ranger reject, Albert Abreu, have higher rank now?  This was the moment to see if Chappy can recapture past glory.

Instead, we went with Wandy ( what kind of name is Wendy?).  To be fair. He did his job.

There was an inning ending double play in the works, except our all star catcher dropped the ball, transferring it from glove to hand. These things happen.

They happened to the Brooklyn Dodgers as August eroded their 13 game lead over the NY Giants, before Bobby Thompson ended it all, with " the shot heard round the world."

So is Chapman already our Ralph Branca?

  2. Yes he could be - however Branca never perspired as much as Chapman

  3. Chapman is a head case. With a man or men on base, he completely falls apart. Bringing him into a high leverage situation with the bases loaded? Nope. Asking for disaster.

Not that Peralta is so great, but he did get a double play ball to third that Donaldson misplayed to extend the inning. Instead of ending the game.

If something is wrong with Holmes, we're toast. He and King are the only reliable relievers we have, unless Lasagna comes back in 2021 form. Castro sucks, Peralta is wobbly...where the hell is Sears? If they need a roster spot, just DFA Chapman. We can afford to see if he can "turn it around." Just like Gallo.

  4. In other news, the Yankees released Greg Bird today.

    He coulda been a contender.

  5. Conor Foley, who covers the Rail Riders, reports that Andujar, Florial, and LoCastro are all in the clubhouse, not headed to NY. Hicks not in the lineup tonight.

  6. In that inning, you could argue that Wandy Peralta got five outs. There were, not just one, but two botched double play balls where they only managed to get one out each time. Give a team five outs in one inning, it's tough to avoid a big inning.

Despite it being glaringly obvious that something was wrong with Holmes, Ba-Boone allows Holmes to continue to struggle until the score is 3-2 and the bags jammed again. Then, with India up, and two outs, he allows Peralta to pitch to another right hand hitter who I knew was going to kill us, which of course he did.

This team is already cooked. You can kiss the best record lead good-bye. It'll be gone by the end of the week, against the hated Bo-Sux. Somewhere along the line, there will be a 15 or 16 game losing skid. A winning season, over .500 record, is definitely not a given. Not with this bunch of pansies and stupid management. They are capable of playing .270 baseball for the entire second half.

  7. Exactly, Hammer! You can't give even the worst major-league team five outs—and in the end, it was a broken-bat hit, on a ball outside the strike zone. Peralta did about as well as could be expected in a tough situation.

  8. The news that nobody is up from Scranton is also very depressing—though a nice scoop, 999.

So, essentially we're playing shorthanded tonight, with a full game from Joey Whiffs required. Oy.

  9. Hey

At least Bird was released today.

    Shows that somebody's working.

  10. Houston killer Benintendi along with nine other Royals players have been placed on the restricted list and will not be allowed to travel to Toronto for their next series. "Whoopsie" say the unvaccinated.

  11. Toronto has the greatest homefield advantage of all time. Every team that visits has to play with subs.

At the beginning of the year I thought that this would insure them of the division. Didn't work out that way... but still.

  12. Oh thank god, the Reds 1-6 pitcher is so minor league his last name is literally Minor. I retract impending doom.

  13. BJPB - we could still find a way to lose.

    (hopefully not)

  14. Two additional observations.....

Could Jonathan India PLEASE get a haircut.

Does anyone think there's a chance that Michael Kay could away?

  15. Good thing Severino got that extra rest.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Judge looks terrible. Called third strike, right down the middle.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Stanton was angered by his punch out . . . .

    ReplyDelete
  18. Farmer just planted that one in the seats . . .

    ReplyDelete
  19. Severino looks terrible. Back to back.

    ReplyDelete
  20. I was so right, and then so wrong. DOOOOOOM…. And the zombie pitcher jamboree is all ours!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  21. This team is in freefall. Red Sox this weekend. 10 out by monday.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Wow. And their best pitcher tomorrow. We are actually going to get swept by the Cincinnati Reds. Does this mean it is 1976 again?

    Where are the tall ships???

    ReplyDelete
  23. Just to make sure the game gets out of reach, Boone Yankees Abreu, who was doing great, and brings in Wandy Sad Sack.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Chapman does okay. That's a good sign. In a close game, yet.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Two on, one out. Not Holmesian.

    ReplyDelete
  26. That was a pretty tough chance for Donaldson.

  27. REPEAT AFTER ME:

WE CAN NEVER NEVER NEVER NEVER NEVER TRUST EL CHAPO WITH ANY MEANINGFUL GAME, INN, OR AT BAT.

HE IS A CHOKER. HE PLAYS, WE LOSE. AT LEAST WHEN IT COUNTS.

    PLAIN AND SIMPLE.

AND HEY, EVEN THOUGH I HAD NOT THOUGHT OF IT UNTIL NOW, I KIND OF MISS ALL-CAPS.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Gallo is a dog, but he doesn't need any help from the ump, who decided after a good five minutes of thought to call it a strike. I don't know how umps can justify that sort of shit.

    ReplyDelete
  29. The cameraman doing a Sterling on LeMahieu's flyball, but no go.

After their 5-run explosion in the 3rd, Yanks have 1 walk, 1 hit, 1 run. Pathetic.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Yanks at DP depth. A mistake, considering how our team hits.

    ReplyDelete
  31. King about to balk in the winning run, I fear.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Callo got called out because he annoys the umps with his laying his bat on home plate *EVERY FUCKING PITCH* during every at bat.

Better off telling the ump his wife was really good in bed this morning after a exhilarating evening on the trapeze last night.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Whatta I know? Nice DP.

Michael Kay even more annoying, talking about each Yankee hitter as likely to belt a walk-off homer. How about a long single here?

    ReplyDelete
  34. donaldson comes through! good!

    ReplyDelete
  35. Interesting, Rufus. And again—no one on the team can tell him that?

    He's now 4-49, incidentally.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Kay doing everything possible to jinx this. Fuck him.

    ReplyDelete
  37. I’m going to take a risk and predict baseball announcing…. John beg for a bunt and not get one.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Kay is really annoying. I agree.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Hoss, I think everyone on the team is worried talking to the twitch will somehow make him worse. Or even worserer (sic), make him go postal. He has that look.

The guy is a mess. I really hoped he would flourish in the Bronx, but cut the cord. Yesterday.

    ReplyDelete
  40. Kay just called Gleyber "The King of the Walk-Off." Oy.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Yankees win. On wild pitches.

    ReplyDelete
  42. A VERY last year win. They are still not playing well.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Count this one as less filling rather than tastes great.

    ReplyDelete
  44. As has been said and truly said, I would rather be lucky than good.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Nice read on the second WP by LeMahieu.

But our starting pitching is coming back to earth faster than a space capsule.

    ReplyDelete
  46. I heard from someone who watched the whole game that the home plate umping was awful, and all one-sided.

    ReplyDelete
  47. Severino with an MRI tomorrow. Ah, hell.

    ReplyDelete
  48. AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  49. 11 walk-offs on the season—most in MLB.

    ReplyDelete
  50. Wait, so Cincinnati has 2 guys named Farmer, Buck and Kyle (aka "Farm Dawg), both from Georgia...and they're not related?

    ReplyDelete
  51. Why does a win feel like a loss?

    ReplyDelete
  52. Brain had better find a way to get a top starter, or this team goes home early. Oh, and an effective outfielder and another steely-eyed reliever. And a short stop. And a new manager.

    ReplyDelete
  53. Hoss - The umpiring was obscene yesterday as well. Really bad and yes, for the most part one-sided. Stanton was particularly jobbed several times so far.

    ReplyDelete
  54. I’m no Gallo fan (I mean, who is?) but that called 3rd strike on him was one of the most outrageous and egregious I’ve ever seen. I don’t know how these players contain themselves, especially after the game. I’ve been advocating for years that all the umpires be removed replaced by ASZ.

    ReplyDelete
  55. A win is a win even when it almost felt like a loss and the ump behind the plate should be terminated from his major league service.

    ReplyDelete
  56. What is up with Donaldson? Has he suddenly turned into Dick Stuart?

And what is up with Judge? Something is seriously wrong with that guy.

    ReplyDelete
  57. Something has gotten into Judge's head.
