Toronto remains stunned by the unmerciful violence inflicted by Aaron Judge. The Jays thought they could do some nutty TikToks and get to him. That shit might work on Rudy Giuliani, but it backfired on Captain Crazy Eyes. As for Boston? They still look like a team destined to vanish in a series of late-July garage sales.
Speaking of trades, Yank fans should start shuddering over the decimation deals that Cooperstown Cashman could inflict on or about Aug. 1. It's hard to imagine a worse set of trades than what he pulled off last year, but in terms of Yankee needs - bullpen, 3B, LF - almost nothing has changed.
Most of all, the Yankees need a LH leftfielder who is not named Estevan Florial.
Apparently, somebody somewhere once caught Florial eating with the wrong fork, or chewing with his mouth open, and he'll never get another shot, no matter what. It's hard to imagine a better defensive outfield than Florial-Bader-Judge. Not many balls would drop. But forget Florial. He's on somebody's shit list.
Did I mention that, last night with Scranton, Florial went 4 for 5, hitting his eighth HR and raising his BA to .313? He has nine stolen bases and an OPS of 1.032. But who cares? All the Yankees are his 46 strikeouts in 115 at bats. (For whatever it's worth, Anthony Volpe has 54 in 162, Judge has 50 in 133, and DJ has 43 in 146.) And, yeah, I can't lie: That's a shit ton of Ks. But Florial has 27 walks and an on-base percentage of .441. He's working on it. If they're not going to give him a shot, they better move him while he's hitting .313 - not wait until he becomes disillusioned and goes 0-for-40.
Of course, there's no path for Florial. Nobody wants to see fan-fave Oswaldo Cabrera demoted, and just when he seems like a washout, Oswaldo always manages to show a spark. The real shame is that the Yankees simply will not let Aaron Hicks go, because they're paying him too much. Thus, Florial can wow Scranton until Doomsday, or at least July 31. But I wonder... if they brought him up tomorrow, wouldn't he outhit Willie Calhoun or Jake Bauers? And isn't he obviously a better fielding option?
Florial's problem is that the Yankees lose nothing by sitting on him. He's 25. Will he die in Scranton? In Florida, they don't say "gay." In NY, they don't say "Estevan."
Given Florial's K's, and what that implies, give him a chance. I would be happy to be wrong, and flags have flown due to crazier reasons. We have nothing to lose. BTW, corner outfielders are considered the easiest positions to fill WTF???

ReplyDeleteI wonder if an unsuspecting British foreign exchange student placed in Tampa would be expelled if he or she innocently said " Do you have an extra fag for me?"
ReplyDeleteCarl, likely not. Simply because the assumption might be that the unsuspecting British foreign exchange student might take them back to Britain with them. Hope that helps.
ReplyDeleteThere was a time they said Estevan in Florida...Gloria Estefan.
ReplyDeleteBut that's ok, Greg Allen will save us...wont he?
Allen actually looked good for us in a short stint a few years ago, but that was a blip on what has been a fringe MLB career. He is a speed/defense type. Not sure what the team’s plan is for him, if any. IMO, the team is just grasping at any inexpensive OF option, preferring quantity over quality. Inexpensive the keyword here.
ReplyDeleteFlorial should be ahead of Allen, Bauers, Cordero, both Calhouns, IKF, Hicks, and even Cabrera (as an OF option). Not saying he is a hidden gem, simply that overall he is a better player than any of the above and actually has a perceivable upside if you squint hard enough.
Cooperstown Cashman deals? What are the odds of him trading away future talent for some washed up somebody who is either hurt or about to be hurt?
ReplyDeleteFlorial has been pegged as an AAAA player. Great defense, but can't hit in the bigs, even though he's tearing up AAA. Trade bait or brought up at 27 like Bauers. Still needs some "seasoning."
ReplyDeleteGreg Allen? WTF? How many not-ready-for-prime-time outfielders do we need?
Hicks is going to be a lifer, watch. Every time he's proven he should be DFAed, he goes on a mini-tear and gets Brain thinking of a new contract extension.
Duque:
ReplyDeleteTake a look at the Scranton Roster. One player 25 years or younger. Two catchers forty and over. Florial fits right in at Scranton. Genius Cashman brings in the the never has beens aND tHE yANKEES HOLD ON TO THEM. cHEAPSKATE hAL.
@ JM, Did I say they would never DFA Hicks? Now that he's actually got a few hits, they're really never going to let him go. He'll be here until the contract finally expires. At which point, I agree with you, Cashman will actually consider resigning him.
ReplyDeleteFor decades now, they've been doing the same kind of stupidity with other minor leaguers as they are with Florial right now. One of the best recent examples was that Korean SS that they had in their system for something like 7 fucking years. Wow!
ReplyDeleteWhy would you wait until a guy is getting long in the tooth to decide to move him? When they've seen a player for a few years, they really should know if he's going to be a viable candidate for the majors. If not, then move him, take a shot on a new youngster.
If they're not going to give Florial a shot, move him and get younger down there. Get rid of all the old guys. Minors should be strictly used as a development factory for the big club. But I guess they want to make money from their minor leagues. They don't want their minor leagues sucking up money to develop players for the big club.
They're bringing back Greg Allen. Who was good while he was here before. Now a few years older. Probably not as good. Cashman loves those second and third helpings.
Great article, love it!
ReplyDeleteRorty is in… but who gonna pitch???
ReplyDelete
ReplyDeleteThey called me. I'll be on the roster before the game starts. I've got a mean 43MPH fastball. My change comes in at about 25MPH.
In other words, I can almost outpitch IKF.
ReplyDeleteCould this be true?

I bought the cake. Anyone have any fireworks?
ReplyDeleteFLORIAL IS NOT A MAJOR LEAGUER. Seriously, enough. Every team in baseball let him pass through waivers. Not one thought he was worth a chance.
ReplyDeleteBreaking news @TalkinYanks is reporting Aaron Hicks has been DFA’d
ReplyDeleteNeed to verify
It’s listed under transactions on AtBat app… so… we won?
ReplyDeleteBeau,
ReplyDeleteIf my damaged memory serves correctly, I believe you either live or work in a town that had a fireworks factory blow up a while ago. Just think of it as bad timing, but thought was there.
Too bad they didn't leave him in hoser-land.
To answe my own question… Brito becaus Sevy is getting it tomorrow. :/. Hope that’s a good thing.
ReplyDeleteConfirmed by the Yankees PR Dept. Aaron Hicks has been DFA’d
ReplyDeleteGreg Allan added to the 26. Only an incremental upgrade, but still…
Also just in, Josh Donaldson dropped a full bucket of paint on his foot on his way to paint over the “YOU SUCK” graffiti some stalwart painted on his house. Expected to be additional 2-3 months
Ding-dong, the witch is dead!!! (Although of course, so Cashman, to DFA Hicks when he finally gets on a hot streak. Oh well, Hicks was going to be on the DL anyway, soon enough.)
ReplyDeleteHammer, you're very right—and it again comes down to the inability of Cashman or anyone else in the organization to judge talent.
ReplyDeleteBig Ben will indeed be ticking today

The Yankees have never given Florial a meaningful trial in the majors--as in a statistically significant number of at-bats in the same season uninterrupted by chronic benching and/or demotion. It's time to give him a fair shot. He is a talented all-around player and deserves a shot. Those who say he can't cut it are operating on prejudice, not empirical evidence.
ReplyDeleteCashman loves proven MLB failures--Allen, Cordero, Calhoun. AllenHe is impervious to empirical evidence: that over a large sample size, guys like this are CRAP and CANNOT SUCCEED as major league players. In a statistically significant sample size with Pittsburgh last years, he slashed .186/.260/.271--numbers that should not only get you released but demoted--to the Little League.
ReplyDeleteSo Cashman-Boone are swapping out one proven MLB failure for another. This bizarre stupidity alone ought to prove to any doubters that Cashman is not guided by analytics, which is above all EVIDENCE-BASED. Among other examples: The evidence points to NOT signing long-term contracts with guys in their thirties, which Cashman seems to do every ten minutes; NOT allowing pitchers to linger very long the third tie through the batting order; NOT over-using the sacrifice bunt, and so on. But Cashman-Boone ignore the evidence and consign their fate to a ouija board Cashman keeps in one of his desk drawers.
The evidence points to a Florial promotion. The reality points to a Cashman-Boone regime addicted to proven MLB failures, steeped in intuitive-seat-of-the-pants fantasies, and blind to empirical evidence.
@EBD
ReplyDeleteNO TEAM in baseball wanted Florial, what makes you think you know better than every professional scout in the business?
