Sunday’s win over the Blue Jays, The Master’s final game, should be immediately inserted into the Yankees Classics rotation, with John’s radio call as the audio.
I’m just hearing about this. We always poked gentle fun at John’s mistakes, but he was a joy to listen to, even at the end.
He was corny, but the best kind of corny, and never took himself too seriously . I loved when he talked to himself, asking and then answering his own question. His interplay with Suzyn always sparkled because it was two good friends just watching a game.
I’m truly bummed and await one of you eloquent fellows to write a proper tribute.
Let’s start beating the drum for his election into the Hall, while he’s around to enjoy it. Can you imagine THAT speech?
John Sterling is my broadcaster; I shall not want. He maketh me to listen whilest I sleep; He leadeth me to turn up the volume whilest I shower. He restoreth my fandom; He leadeth me to follow the Yankees to awaiteth another championship. Yeah, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of Red Sox, I shall fear no ASS-stros. For thou art with me. Thy voice and thy style, they comfort me. Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of the Tampons. Thou anointest my ears with win warbling vibrato. My heart leapeth for joy! Surely wins and championships will follow all the days of my life And I will remember thy voice thundering "Thuuuuuuuuuuuuh Yankees win!" forever. Amen.

I really am saddened by the thought that he won't be making those calls anymore. Or yelling "Thuuuuuuuuh Yankees win!"
ReplyDeleteAnother dollop of fun disappears. I wish him well.
RIP Ken Holtzman
ReplyDeleteShit, that too?

That was beautiful. Such beauty and majesty will never return in our lives. We were very lucky to have had both The Scooter and then The Master.
ReplyDeleteFuck Hal.

ReplyDeleteYou'll appreciate it...
What will become of Suzyn? It’s like a death in the family. Will she be next?
ReplyDeleteNow we’ll be subjected to an endless stream of statistics bandied about by Casper milquetoast and his bland band of nondescript parrots.
ReplyDeleteHammer, I think you just gave me religion.
ReplyDeleteDavey, you're right. "The best kind of corny."
ReplyDeleteI joke, but this is a blow.
