Hot news from the Yankee News Network: The Yankees are said to be pleased with themselves. As usual.
Word from the Death Barge brain trust is that their lengthy, coffee-and-donuts talk with Juan Soto and Scott Boras this week did not erupt into, say, fisticuffs or a stabbing. Nobody's fly was unzipped. Nobody puked on the floor. Both sides spoke respectfully and cheerfully - a good time had by all! The Yankees made their elevator pitch, their water-cooler performance, their Power Point presentation and their art show oral sex skit, seeking to woo Soto to another year in the Bronx, at a price tag of probably $65 million per season.
Once Soto chooses his future home, the rest of baseball can begin strategizing for 2025.
Insert sigh here.
Look... we can sit back and replay the old bits, carping about the obscene amounts of money paid to athletes. But I'm 72, and throughout all of my periods of semi-awareness, I cannot recall a time when old-coots were not complaining about the money made by today's stars. It's normalcy, the way of the world.
And never once did the amounts of money made by the owners receive equal billing.
It's impossible to gauge how much Soto deserves to be paid, unless we know how much Hal Steinbrenner is regularly banking, and those figures generally don't get reported. When people talk about Steven Cohen's wealth, the amount seems almost theoretical - closer to infinity than absolute zero. And both are paupers, compared to Elon Musk.
So why are we so obsessed with and - at times - angry over what the players make? Yeah, some are pampered assholes, groomed as future millionaires by age 16. But the same can be said of many of the owners. Is it because the players are often Blacks or Latinos, who grew up poor or middle class, while the owners are almost always old money WASPs? Or is that too easy an explanation? In my life, I've never figured it out.
So, we sit here...
We're Estragon and Vladimir, waiting for Godot. We're Charlie Brown and Linus, waiting in the pumpkin patch. We're Hal and Cashman, wondering if our jokes clanked and if we should have worn a tie? We're waiting for a decision, a verdict on our worthiness and wealth.
Meanwhile, good news, everybody: The Yankees are pleased with themselves.
The Yankees will not get Soto because Cashman drank his tea without extending his pinky and also took the last scone.
ReplyDeleteOh crap! WHAT did he do with that scone?
DeleteI know what he can go with that scone…
DeleteGood point, Duque. What the players make is obscene—but even more obscene is what we pay the owners. And if they somehow broke the players' union tomorrow, prices would not go down by a dime.
ReplyDeleteI keep thinking that, somewhere along the line, the business of sports has got to implode. But I keep being wrong.
Never heard of a fan going to see an owner "own" something...
DeleteI’m just hoping the situation with Soto resolves itself quickly, one way or the other. If he signs with say, the Mets, we’ll have a lot of work to do. I’m already ready to move on.
ReplyDeleteI hope he signs with the Mets - heresy, I know - and that we then have to rely on Brian's Brain and skills to get us to the World Series. I wonder how that would go? Hmmm....let me think about it...

The #Yankees added infielder Caleb Durbin and catcher Jesús Rodríguez to their 40-man roster.
There are now 37 players on their 40-man roster.
Additionally, the Yankees received RHP Carson Coleman as a Rule 5 Draft return from Texas.
ReplyDeleteCarson Coleman!! Wow!! Get ready for your rings, boys!!!
ReplyDeleteHappened to catch a bit of Kay on ESPN radio yesterday talking Soto's expected salary, and he was feeling sorry for those poor owners and how they have to raise the price of popcorn when they sign a huge contract.
What a jerk.
Though--maybe on WFAN--the thinking is that Soto is not a complete player, lacking defense and speed, so does not deserve Ohtani money. Maybe not even Judge money, though he'll get more than the Captain. But then there's the fact that he's only 26.
On and on and on it goes...
ATTENTION! I NEED BACKUP, YOU GUYS. I just posted on Keefe to the City's FB page. He told us to post questions, so I gave him my usual rant about Hal and Brian and Boone sucking. THEN, some psycho true believer came on and said he wanted to dispute me, upon which he posted all this ridiculous Yank-Jazeera crap. I responded that I did not intent to engage with him,. but that we were on different planets. I SHOULD JUST BLOCK HIM, but I'm in mood to tolerate fools today - taking care of a sick dog for weeks now - so if any of you on FB felt like being an 8 year old along with me, please go and set the record straight. After that, maybe I'll clock him. So sick of these idiots. It's Moron In America for Yankee fans.
ReplyDeleteLet me look bittster
DeleteI may just go block this guy. I don't have the energy to fight anyone, especially a Brian apologist. Shit, it may even be Brian, himself posting.
DeleteIf I was a FB user, Bit, I would certainly join you.
ReplyDeleteAll good points Mr. Duque. That said, there is a problem with overpaying, and I'm all in favor or giving professional athletes as much as they can get.
ReplyDeleteAfter all they are the top of the pyramid that starts with every kid running around in their chosen teams underoos.
Unfortunately our owner has a self imposed budget. So $65 mil prevents the Yankees from getting help in other areas and forces Brain to dumpster dive.
The Yankees would have a Rolex on the wrist and everything else from the factory outlet store.
Brand names at a discount!
Ignore the poor stitching.
just blocked this guy. problem solved. life is just too short for bullshit.
ReplyDeleteFuck him. Fuck that noise. Fuck HAL. Fuck CashBrain. Fuck fuck. Fuck.
ReplyDeleteI would block Yankee ownership and front office.

DeleteLast night I was looking on baseball-reference.com and compared Soto to Mike Trout. They both came up and stuck in the Majors at age 19. Trout's WAR numbers blow Soto's numbers away (I'm not trying to dis' Soto, at all). But here's the thing: Trout is currently 32 years old. He's had two "super-great" and one "merely great" seasons since then. We all know the reason, injuries. But the Angels never came close to winning anything during Trout's career. Well, there's two things to look at. The Angels haven't been able to assemble a supporting cast around Trout, and of course the injuries. So obviously injuries have to be factored into the cost of buying a player. And I sure as hell wouldn't care to bet against the Injury Plague. We KNOW that Hal would forever blame the Soto inflated payroll for not buying premier players. And who here believes in the ability of Cashman to suddenly learn who to hire that can build a farm? Yeah, Soto would be nice if George was the owner, maybe. But we have Hal, and most of us won't live long enough to see that Ring if Soto is retained. Just a'sayin'....
ReplyDeleteWhere did you visit after your baseball-reference.com journey? Any other informative reads? Perhaps this: https://www.theguardian.com/film/2023/aug/16/return-of-portmanteau-horror-films-amicus
DeleteKevin, I hear you, and it certainly is a risk. But you cite all the reasons why it's worth taking. Hal & Pal can't build a farm system, and won't put together a contender by acquiring guys from other teams. So what's left? I'd rather take the risk, with the hope that we at least get some serious entertainment out of Soto.
DeleteAA, thx for the tip! I will be looking into buying at least some of them. Horace, I don't know. I have a "for no reason" gut feeling that Soto will become another Stanton either because of injury, motivation, or some combination. If he can't play defense for an entire year while in his "Pay ME" year when will he? Remembering all the talk of his improved defense early on. Is it that he can't physically be a good outfielder, or can't concentrate on being a good outfielder? Watching Betts in the WS reminded me of how it should go down. I dunno....
Deleteugh - maybe I should have made myself something stronger than a cup of tea:
ReplyDeletehttps://nypost.com/2024/11/20/sports/hal-steinbrenner-unsure-of-yankees-juan-soto-chances-after-very-honest-meeting/
I never understood all the whining about athlete salaries. Nobody ever cared how much movie stars made, and the A-listers make more money than athletes and for 6 weeks of filming and a couple of promotional moments. I figured it was the empty-headed sports commentators, doing the dirty work of the owners. But that nonsense resonates because most of the players aren't white.
ReplyDeleteAs for Soto, I don't think money is his only concern. He's asked questions about player development and management in the meetings. He wants to know if the team is committed to producing championship-class teams and whether their management is competent.
If those are important, he'll sign with the Dodgers. Hal, Brian, Aaron and Randy (who should have been told to go watch the cars) could only embarrass themselves talking BS.
Love that idea of what to do with Randy. What, Lon Trost didn't
Deletemake the plane?
Why does he always seem to exude an air of "I don't give a shit?" Perhaps he doesn't? And also, he always seems resentful at having to answer questions. Maybe I'm wrong. I have always thought that his decisions and lack of care about the Yankees were about a way of saying "fuck you" to King George for ruining his childhood. Maybe he STILL resents it. Money is probably an abstract concept to him and the Yankees are just another revenue stream. But maybe he stands there and thinks, "Thanks, Dad, for ruining my life to this day." The unwilling King Hal. And doesn't “We’ll be in the mix.” sound just like, "Excuse me while I got jack off in the bathroom and then leave through the back door?" Doesn't it now? UGH UGH UGH...
ReplyDeleteKevin said it best. No one goes to the park to watch owners own.
DeleteI will be amazed if the Amazins don't sign him. Ah, well.
ReplyDeleteIf the Amazin's sign him, he's in it for the dollars. If the Dodgers sign him, its because wants to play with a championship-class team with great management. If he signs with the Yankees, well, I don't know what would make him do that, except way more money than anyone else will offer. Which would be a warning sign as to whether he cares about playing on a championship-caliber team.
ReplyDeleteIt’s not just the players, but the agents guiding them. Boras has based his whole career on getting the highest dollar amount for his clients. I fully expect that to be the case with Soto, even if it ends up being with a “mystery” team, like the Blue Jays. I still expect it to be the Mets, and the total contract value will be north of $700M. Does anyone here see little stein paying that much for a player? Raise your hand.
ReplyDeleteNever underestimate Boras and his involvement and influence….
ReplyDeleteHe tends to charm the majority of his players and gets them to act on his advice
DeleteI hope, when he signs elsewhere, he explains that he had no faith in Yankees management to build & maintain a long-term competitive, championship-contending team either via player development or smart trades & well-targeted free agents. Or just that Hal is indifferent, Cashman is a moron, & Boone is overmatched.
ReplyDeleteThis comment has been removed by the author.
DeleteUntil it does not. A meeting with Cheapskate Hal, Genius Cashman, Fat Slob Arrogant Randy Levine and The Dofus Manager Boone. Boras and Soto were probably laughing at them.
