Well, well. As if baseball isn't enshittified enough, the New York Yankees have now joined forces with the prediction market Polymarket, which is now the Official Prediction Market of the New York Yankees. Baseball, and sports in general, is no longer a leisure pastime for the enjoyment of watching humans compete for titles, but rather just another market for betting and profiteering off suckers fans willing to pony up money they probably don't have or shouldn't spend on outrageously priced tickets or gambling. This comes on the heels of the Mets signing a deal with prediction market Novig last week.
Of course, the NY Post is getting its cut. I think IIHIIFIIG should partner up with Kalshi and offer some coupon codes before it's too late. We can start with betting on how long it will be before Polymarket's odds appear alongside the scoreboard.

ReplyDeleteAgreed. Can’t stand the ads for legalized betting as it is. A few scant years ago, betting was anathema for the owners. But just wave a few bucks in front of the owners and they squeal like the pigs they so closely resemble.

ReplyDeleteNEW YORK, July 31 (Reuters) - New York's attorney general sued Kalshi on Friday, claiming that its prediction market platform violates state laws against illegal gambling.
The case, brought by Attorney General Letitia James, escalates a rapidly expanding battle, including a flurry of lawsuits and countersuits, over whether individual U.S. states or the federal government should regulate the fast-growing prediction markets industry.
James said in a petition filed in a state court in Manhattan that Kalshi failed to obtain a New York State Gaming Commission license to operate its platform, where people trade based on the predicted outcomes of sports, elections and other events.
The attorney
general said such platforms can encourage problem gambling, including by people under age 21, and endanger people's financial, emotional and physical health.
She filed similar petitions in April against two other prediction market operators – Coinbase Financial Markets (COIN.O), opens new tab and Gemini Titan (GEMI.O), opens new tab – saying all three companies' so-called event contracts were "quintessentially" gambling.
