2. Boone's Circle of Trust is leaking. Our mainstays - Brent Headrick and Fernando Cruz (see chart) - desperately need a week of fine weed and Calgon Bath Oil Beads, but that won't happen, not with Boston approaching. The 6th, 7th and 8th innings now belong to Blackburn and Hill. Blare the sirens. This is Def-Con 4.
3. George Lombard Jr. remains the great Jeterian hope. But four errors in four games have raised rip tide warnings. Suddenly, when the ball gets hit his way, the Yankiverse holds its breath. The franchise cannot afford another infield apparition. If this becomes a mental thing...
4. Like the guy in Obsession, the horror flick about Natalie Harp, I am clutching my trinket and wishing for Aaron Judge to return... NOW! But but BUT... if he's not ready, he could bring an 0-for-15 weekend.
5. Sonny Gray is 16-3 and Boston's shot for the Cy Young. He pitches tonight against the Marlins and will probably go Sunday. God knows who will oppose him.
6. If there's anything we've come to know about Will Warren, it's that Boone always leaves him in one batter too long.
7. Over the last month, Ben Rice is hitting .158 with three HRs. Yes, he's a fan fave. But batting second, he's coming up in huge situations, and he's not getting it done.
9. Last night for Scranton, the Railriders used five pitchers, a bullpen start, and gave up six runs. Help is not on the way.
10. I know it's not easy, but when Jazz Chisholm is on 1B, and Austin Wells is batting, there should be an immediate command to steal 2B. Wells is a human GIDP, and his DP grounder killed us last night.
Damn, I hate losing to Jose Altuve.
Funny how the incipient optimism brewing here lately turns to dust in the face of reality..
ReplyDeleteYep. Just when everybody seems to be turning a corner, there's another awful game like this. I've never seen a team that seemed so unable to pick up any sort of momentum from winning.

Grisham keeps inexplicably batting first. This worries me. This means that Boone is worse than an idiot. He's also blind.
The loss was so indicative of today's Yankees.

8 of the 9 Astros' runs scored with two outs. Yankees pitchers failed again and again and again to put away one more guy when they had to...
Second, it was as sloppy as a drunk eating soup.

ReplyDeleteAfter Garcia's double puts them up, 6-5, they had men on second and third with one out. Cody Bellinger, who did, at least, have a big home run, could have all but put the game away with a single. He at least needed a flyball to get a run in. He couldn't produce either. Nor could Lombard, batting next...
Other than that Mrs. Lincoln, how did you enjoy the play?

ReplyDeleteAs our Peerless Leader noted, Jazz should've been running before Wells bounced into that DP.
That was, incidentally, the 10th GIDP of the year for Wells, who is back to hitting .177. He has grounded into more double-plays than he has hit doubles, more double-plays than he has hit home runs. He has 19 RBI.
I never thought I would see a Yankees catcher who hits 40 points below Jake Gibbs. But if you're stuck with him, you've got to try to minimize his damage.
Boone does not...
...and then of course there's the inevitable Cashman contribution. Sigh.

Getting the save last night was Josh Hader, the closer Cashman refused to even pursue when he was a free agent. He has 81 saves in his less-then-three years with the Astros. He has a 0.81 ERA this year.
We got bupkus. Way to go, Brain.

ReplyDeleteNot worried yet. The game is faster than he's used to. The runners are faster and the balls are hit harder. He has the talent and athleticism he should be able to adjust.
Right now he's rushing the transfer to compensate and dropping the ball.
Also, on certain plays, he's throwing the ball in rhythm in time to get the runners he's faced in the past and then mid-way through "realizes" that he's not going to get the MLB guy. and hitches or rushes the throw..
It's just reps.
Plus he's making plays and getting outs that Volpe just dreams about. Give the kid time. It's a big leap for one year. He's now the starting SS for the New York Yankees.
Not to compare to Jeter but in his full rookie year Jeter had 22 Errors in 157 games.
"Blackburn and Hill" sounds like either a furniture company from the 1980s or an insurance agency in Lincoln, Nebraska. And here is what Volpe is - a solid AAAA player. He'll always do well in AAA, but I don't want to see him on the big team. Ever. Him and Jazz. Call me an asshole, but I'm done with them. Going to be a fun week ahead.

ReplyDeleteHeard somewheres that the Yankees haven't scored a 1st inning run in something close to 30 games now. Is that true? Wow! LOL at the stupidity of Boone's lineups. Maybe they won't score in the 1st inning again this year.
ReplyDeleteI always said, the 1st inning is really important. It's the best inning to ambush a great pitcher. Might be your best chance to score runs in the game. 125 years of baseball, flushed down the fucking toilet.

ReplyDeleteHoss, I was for getting Hader too. But if we got him, I'm sure he'd be on the disabled list because bones in his elbow are crashing together. With his leg kick on the follow through, he might have also bones in his left knee and left hip crashing together as well.

ReplyDeleteJust can't see this Yankee team winning most of its games down the stretch. Impossible. They always lose most of their games against the ASS-stros, Rays, Red Sox, Mets. But this year, in particular, I just don't see them winning more than a game or two (total) in those four series.
ReplyDeleteThis is based on the debacle we saw this year against the Red Sox, when the Yankees got killed in that four game series. Wasn't there also a series earlier this year against the Rays where the Yankees got swept? (So much losing, can't even keep track of it all.) Plus, with all four of those teams playing much, much better than they were earlier in the season, I just don't see it. Red Sox have been winning again lately, by the way. Mets beat the Brew Crew yesterday.
All of those teams are better than the Yankees right now. Which is why you can throw all the stats out the window, flush 'em all down the fucking toilet. Nothing matters but the here and now.

ReplyDeleteIn all seriousness, that was a big loss yesterday. Unfortunately, more big losses are a-comin' soon. Every game down the stretch becomes "the most important game of the season", until you make the playoffs. Then, in the playoffs, every game becomes "the most important game of the season".
